Volume 3   Issue 1&2
Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.

This newsletter will cover two months because quite frankly, time has just gotten away from us.  Peggy and I have been back on the East coast twice in the last 3 weeks.  Between family Christmas in Boston, a quick trip to Washington DC, and the SHOT show in Orlando, we have been on the go.  But have we got some great stories.

Peggy and I started 2009 out in a once-in-a-lifetime fashion.  We started out in Boston for our family Christmas.  Peggy's sister has season tickets to the Boston Celtics and treated us to a Game on Friday night.  The suprise for me was, she called her friend (owner of the Celtics) to request 2 additional tickets (she only has four season tickets) for us.

Talk about great seats...when we picked up the two extra tickets they were Floor seats and my nephew and I sat on the floor with Celtics owner and Matt Cassel the NE Patriots quarterback.  It was amazing being under the boards and experiencing the game and tremendous speed exhibited by these players under the basket. Picture below will give you some perspective of our seats.  As an additional treat, the Celtics owner let me wear his championshp ring...hated to give it back:-).celtics1

Then if that experience was not enough she treated us to another major suprise.  She has hired the White House Deputy Chief of Staff who will start working for her after Pres Bush moves to TX.  He invited Peggy's sister Jane to visit the White House before the transfer of Presidents.

So the morning of the day we're to fly back to Idaho we board a plane to DC and are treated to a private tour of the West Wing.  This is an area the public does not get to see.  The highlight was a suprise to us but a scheduled meeting with President Bush.  He came in and spent about 15 minutes talking to us.  He made us feel at home and never did any of us feel rushed or out of place.  It is a trip I will long remember.  The White House photographers took a bunch of pictures of the meeting so when they arrive we will be putting one up in our office.

So how do we top this beginning to 2009?  I believe by continuing to provide the best possible shooting experience available to our customers.  We will continue to provide cutting edge training programs and offer the products and services you desire.

We continue to add new classes and class dates to keep up with your demand.  As many of you know, training is the main reason CTS exists.  I know that you can get training anywhere so we appreciate you choosing us.  We put our money where our mouth is and in that regard we will always allow you to repeat any class taken with us forever for FREE!

Happy New Year!

Your CTS Family.

A Unique Opportunity

I wanted to point out a class situation that may be of interest to some of you.  Between March 23 and March 26, we are offering Utah CCW, Kubaton, Home Def Shotgun, and Basic Carbine.  Here is the deal. We are doing this by request of a family that is traveling to Center Target from the Mid-West during spring break.  They are traveling here for firearms training and requested these specific classes.  This family does not have enough people to fill these classes on their own.  They will go regardless of the number of students enrolled. These classes are available for open enrollment.  Don't miss this opportunity to get in on one or more of these midweek classes.

We very seldom offer some of these classes during the week and never consecutively 4 days in a row. This is a special opportunity to participate in these challenging classes with what we expect to be less than full enrollment.  As many of you know, almost every class offered here in the last 4 months has been sold out.

Call soon to reserve your place in class.

SHOT Show Report

Peggy and I just returned from the SHOT show in Orlando.  The overwhelming conversation of the participants seemed to be about the last few months of 2008 and what that meant for retailers in the gun industry.  The consensus among every AR type manufacturer is that they are all having trouble procuring or manufacturing the components to assemble the finished products.  The handgun manufacturers were very non-committal on delivery dates for even their most basic version guns.

We looked for new products and technologies to bring into the store and found a few that peaked our interest.  Looks like we may have finally found the target robot we've been searching for  for about a year and a half now.  We purchased some new knives and a very unique flashlight holster that is universal to any flashlight we were able to try in it.  Imagine, a holster on your belt that will securely hold any flashlight you put in it.

Another exciting contact we made was with a target manufacturer that has agreed to print a Low-Light target that I designed for law enforcement low-light training.  I agreed to allow them to sell or make available to any police agency that wants them.  This will be an industry standard as there are no targets presently available that adaquetely challenge a shooter in the dark.  In addition, this target has built in diagnostic patterns that will allow the low-light instructor insight into the shooter's performance beyond what is presently available.

Below are some facts about the SHOT show in general:

The National Shooting Sports Foundation's SHOT Show wrapped up Sunday in Orlando with strong attendance and a cautiously optimistic outlook for the coming business year. Though many trade shows have seen a decline in attendance, SHOT Show attendance increased 3 percent when compared to its last visit to Orlando in 2006, and was down just 6 percent when compared to last year's record-breaking show in Las Vegas. According to preliminary figures, this year's show attracted 25,384 attendees, 22,098 exhibiting personnel and a record 1,425 members of the media for a total attendance of 48,907.
We're still exhausted just thinking about it!
The Difference Between
Defensive HG I and Def HG II

Customers often ask about how Def HG I differs from DEF HG II.  The primary difference is in the performance standards, skill set complexity, and speed of the class as a whole.  Def HG II is certainly built on the skill sets introduced in DEF HG I.  See Note at end of article.

Probably the easiest way to explain the differences that impact the student between these two classes is that in Def I we introduce the student to defensive skill sets that require gunfighting type shooting fundamentals and firearm manipulation skills.  In Def II, these very same skill sets are REFINED, carried over and added to additional even more complex skill sets.  In addition, we expand the phyilosophy and mental aspects of lethal encounter performance while requiring skill set performance at a much higher level and efficiency.

NOTE:  Last year we had a couple and their son visiting CDA on the same weekend that we were offering Def HG II.  They asked to be admitted without the prerequisit DEF I course.  When I questioned them about their shooting experience, they informed me they had taken a number of classes at one of the "Big Named" training facilities spending over $5,000 in the last 18 months.  Based on that information, I allowed them to take the class.

What a mistake.  They were lost in the classroom and it got worse when we went to the range for live fire exercises.  Skill sets that I believe are fundamental and should be covered in a basic defensive level class were foreign to these visitors.

It all ended well as they informed me at the end of the training day that they will return to the great Northwest for all their future firearms training.  There was some mention of a return trip to the "Big Named" facility for a refund... but we won't go there.

A Call To Action

Gun owners had better TAKE ACTION on this one, or you (we) are done for.

     Ammunition Accountability Act

Heads up to all of you who swore to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign AND domestic. Let your state Legislatures know that we do not want this bill passed, and petition them to vote no on this bill. We should keep after them until the bill is closed by bombarding them with e-mails, phone calls, and letters.

Notify all your politicians to get to work and NOT LET THIS HAPPEN!!!

The Ammunition Accountability Act is being introduced across the country. Below is a list of states where legislation has already been introduced:

Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington

www.ammunitionaccountability.org/Legislation.htm

Well, it seems that many in the anti-gun world have no problem with taking your ammo!

The bill that is being pushed in 18 states including WASHINGTON and requires all ammunition to be encoded by the manufacturer, and a data base of all ammunition sales. So the government will know how much you buy and what calibers. Nobody can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless the ammunition is coded.

Any privately held un-coded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011. (Including hand loaded ammo.) They will also charge a .05 cent tax on every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or more!

If they can deprive you of ammo, they do not need to take your gun!

Please give this the widest distribution possible and contact your Reps!

In humor, there is truth

There has been a huge increase in the passing of endless reams of jokes on the internet. Some of the jokes are pretty funny and many come dangerously close to the truth. One funny email about shooting makes the circuit every few months, and is worth an examination for its basis in truth.

Recommendations for your next gunfight

1. Bring a gun. Better to bring two guns - and all of your friends who have guns.

TRUTH - How many investigative and administrative-type cops do you know who don't wear a gun everyday at work? I know a lot of them. And waiting for backup whenever possible goes without saying.

2. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and some friends with long guns. Explosives can substitute for a few friends, but not all.

TRUTH - A long gun is a much better choice for a gunfight 99 percent of the time. This one reminds me of another good joke-an old time Sheriff showed up at the church social wearing his revolver. An elderly lady asked, "I see you brought your sidearm, Sheriff, are you expecting trouble?" The old lawman politely replied, "No ma'am, if I was expecting trouble I'd have brought my rifle."

3. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun the caliber of which does not start with a "4."

TRUTH - I'd venture to say more than half of U.S. officers now pack something that starts with a "4," either a .40 or a .45. This is a dramatic change from the past preponderance of .38's and 9mm pistols.

4. Use a gun that works every time. "All skill is in vain when an Angel pisses in the flintlock of your musket."

TRUTH - Reliability is much more important than accuracy.

5. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice or three times. More is better. Ammunition is cheap. Life is expensive.

TRUTH - Pistols are really pretty feeble in the overall scheme of firearms. More than one shot is cheap insurance. More than 5 or 6 shots might require explanation.

6. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

TRUTH - Wyatt Earp said it best. "Fast is fine, but accuracy is final."

7. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

TRUTH - These days the difference between most shooting stances almost requires stop-frame video to recognize the fine distinctions. Shooting from a stationary position makes you an easier target - learn to shoot on the move.

8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. Lateral and diagonal movements are preferred.

TRUTH - Several studies prove your survival chances increase with distance - so use it.

9. In ten years, nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They'll only remember who lived.

TRUTH - History records the winners and buries the losers.

10. If you aren't shooting, you should be reloading, communicating and running.

TRUTH - Training Guru Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch puts it this way, "If you're not shootin' you should be loadin'. If you're not loadin' you should be movin'. If you're not movin', somone's gonna cut your head off and put it on a stick."

11. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on the "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

TRUTH - This is how an officer who hits center-mass 100 percent of the time on the range can miss with every shot on the street. Effective gunfighting comes much more from mental preparation than physical preparation.

12. Someday, someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it, because it is empty.

TRUTH - Always carry at least one reload with you, even off duty. A backup gun is also a good idea.

Join The NRA at Center Target Sports

There has never been a more critical time to join the NRA than now.  The future of gun ownership and the issues facing the ammo manufactures should be reason enough for everyone to rally around the efforts of the NRA.

You can join, renew, upgrade a current membership or even purchase a life membership for your children here at Center Target Sports.  We will mail in the necessary paperwork and take care of all the details for you.  Joining at a Recruiting facility like ours will even save you money.

Recently, we have had a number of people buy lifetime memberships for their children or grandchildren.  This could be the ultimate gift for our future shooters and you will save a lot of money at the same time.  A lifetime membership purchased today for a child is certainly much cheaper than a lifetime membership will be when they are adults.  They will never have to pay a dime for membership at any time in the future.

Come in today and see one of our staff members for NRA membership.
