Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.
Can you believe that Christmas is just days away? This year has just blown by. The holiday season serves as a reminder to many of us to give thanks. This year Peggy and I have so many reasons to be especially thankful.
We have our faith, our health, our friends, each other and of course our awesome staff and customers/patrons. We are so blessed to have members and customers like you. This has been an unbelievable year for us at Center Target Sports. The business continues to grow beyond our wildest expectations.
So many of you know of my passion for training. Your support for our courses has been the most gratifying part of this whole journey we are on. I believe we would not have survived without your participation and word-of-mouth promotion of our programs and facility. It is with the most humble of hearts that we simply say "Thank You All and May God Bless You and Your Family".
This month we filmed a national commercial for a major hearing protection company and we completed the filming of the companion video to my book "Rule the Night Win the Fight". They tell me the video will be ready by the end of the month and maybe even in time for Christmas.
The picture to the right was taken during the new Force-On-Force portion of the CCW Street Survival Skills class. Lee has had about enough of my aggression and decides to shoot me as I attack her. Don't worry, we use airguns.
This is a classic example of how our curriculum has changed to meet your needs.
Watch the course schedule calendar for additional classes added in an effort to relieve some of our backlog of sold out classes. We are inserting some additional classes during the week so you may get a call asking if you would want to move forward from your currently enrolled class.
Thank you again and Happy New Year to you all.
Your CTS Family.

Grant Received for Peggy's Refuse To Be A Victim Program
The National Firearms Education Fund recognized the great work Peggy does for the OASIS program in Post Falls with a grant in the amount of $600.00.
Bob Smith with the fund and Founder of Fernan Rod and Gun club, was instrumental in securing the grant which will help pay for the student packets that are provided to all students in the RTBAV classes. Please see the above photo courtesy of Mike Satren CDA press.
We donate 100% of the proceeds from this program to the OASIS woman's shelter in Post Falls. We used to offer this class once a quarter, but the demand has grown so much that we now offer the class every other month. We have to purchase the student packets from the NRA and we absorb all the cost of the packets. This generous grant will allow us to offset some of the cost of these packets and provide this valuable information to even more students.
Thank you Bob for your support and thanks to the Fund.
The next 2 classes are scheduled for Dec 18 and Feb 5 from 5:30-9:30pm.

Ladies Day Still Thursday
Ladies day will still be on Thursday. However, starting in Janurary, women will shoot for FREE with the purchase of a box of ammo. With the cost of everything going up we have no choice to at least require the purchase of ammo in the caliber they will be shooting in order to continue the FREE range fee program we offer to female shooters.

LED Lights
The revolution in small, powerful, handheld tactical lights started by Surefire many years ago has now come to fruition. The market is exploding with lights from what seem like dozens of new manufacturers, all of them small, handheld and very bright. What makes one better than another? Which one is right for you? I will try to briefly describe the important features that differentiate one light from another.
LED vs. Incandescent Incandescent lights are the kind that Thomas Edison invented, and that you grew up with. Incandescent lamps are fragile because both the filament and the glass enclosure containing the gas can break. By contrast, LEDs (light emitting diodes) are essentially glowing pieces of a very special kind of sand. They have no easily breakable parts and are inherently shock-resistant. The bottom line is that incandescent technology is all but obsolete now.
Lumens And Such... Lumens is a measure of the total light output of a lamp. Candlepower is a measure of the brightest spot in the total output. They vary independently and are not convertible to one another. The corona is the area in which light falls and is measured in degrees from the lamp; the larger the corona, the larger the area that the lamp illuminates. For tactical use we want a large amount of output - that is, lumens. We also want a uniform corona, without dark spots, and LEDs generally have an edge here. Throw denotes how distant the light remains useful for object or people identification. Note that for a given lumen output, you generally trade throw for corona size.
Impact, Size and Output We drop stuff a lot, and bang it around even more. You want a light that can literally be thrown hard onto a concrete floor and keep ticking.
Powerfully bright lights are now available in very small packages. Although I believe that the original 5-inch or so length is ergonomically optimal. Most people agree that 60 lumens is the floor for a tactical light. I recommend at least 80.
Switching I recommend a tail-cap switch should have momentary-on capability. A side-body switch can't be as safely manipulated during a tactical search with a gun deployed.
Batteries In the old days, you had to go with expensive CR123A lithium batteries to get "tactical" amounts of output. Today, with advances in LED technology, tactical lights can be powered by common AA (and even AAA) alkaline batteries. Also, 123A batteries have come down in price.
Strobing Strobing is becoming a common feature in tactical lights, and experience to date indicates that it is indeed useful for subject disorientation, distraction, and blinding.
LED technology At the high end of this product class, only the very best LEDs will produce the whitest light, the longest run time, and so on. Every manufacturing cycle produces LEDs of varying quality, and those designated "Bin 1" are the best (Bin 1 LEDs may be only 1 percent of a manufacturing lot.) Manufacturers vary in quality, too; look for LEDs from Cree and LUXEON in high-end lights. Lights with less expensive LEDs will still work fine, but the difference between the light from the best LEDs and the more yellow or more blue light from less expensive LEDs is comparable to the difference between a regular duty handgun and a fine gun with extensive gunsmithing.
Bottom line, try before you buy and look for the manufacturer's warranty. Higher end lights will come with lifetime guarantees and no longer cost you a month's pay.

Monthly Training Tip
Routines and Habits can have a lasting impact on your performance.
When is the last time you practiced a tactical reload? When is the last time you told yourself "If I get shot today I am going to survive"? Or when did you last test your family's awareness skills/mindset? These are but a few of the things you should be doing daily to ultimately prepare for the unexpected.
Let's discuss the many benefits of this type of training/preparation philosophy. When someone starts their day by looking in the mirror and saying "If I get shot today, I will survive" they don't actually believe they will be shot. However, by saying that little phrase on a daily basis they are in fact planting that attitude in their subconscious in the event the unthinkable happens. After all, if you don't plant the seed you will never muster the inner mentality that may just save the day.
In more and more classes I am encouraging my students to do a tactical reload every time they load their firearm during the start of a practice session or when making ready to carry. Just think how many tactical reloads you will have accomplished or practiced by the end of the year. Your ability to do smooth efficient reloads will have been greatly improved.
By now I believe everyone knows how I feel about this.
But just in case, allow me to elaborate here. It is the little preparations that can make the difference. Take your time to think them through and ultimately enhance you ability to win the fight. So often we focus on the dynamic or complex aspects of the advanced skill sets. However, it is often the little things that have the greatest impact on our overall survival.
Don't underestimate the power of repetitive suggestion to our psyche or the benefits of simple repetition of the most basic of skills.

GIFT Certificates May Be The Answer
A gift for every occassion. They never expire. Can be used for firearm and accessory purchases, class registration, memberships and range time.
A gift certificate doesn't mean you don't know what to buy someone, it means you're allowing them to choose what they really want. Firearms and firearms accessories are very personal, so giving a gift certificate lets the receiver make the right "fit".
It only takes a minute or two to stop in and get your Personalized Gift Certificate in the amount of your choosing. Put a smile on someone's face no matter what the occassion.

OTHER GIFT IDEAS
It is that time of year again. People are coming in on a daily basis asking for gift ideas. It is so cool to see so many spouses and family members thinking of Center Target Sports as their holiday shopping solution.
Here are a couple of ideas that may help you with your shopping needs. A popular item this year has been this book on Low-Light shooting called "Rule the Night Win the Fight" written by some guy we all know. I have been humbled by the response to this book and will be happy to sign and personalize your copy if you would like. Also perfect for that military or law enforcement person in your family.
LED flashlights are another gift that will fit in anyone's budget and provide years of practical use and service. After all, one can never have too many flashlights.
Small gun vaults are selling faster than we can keep them in stock. Both the push button and finger print models are in high demand.
For all you last minute shoppers, Ed and Peggy will be manning the counters on Christmas Eve as Center Target Sports will be open until 7pm. | |
