Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.

Last month I talked about the "pace picking up".  That was an understatement to say the least.  October proved to be the best month we have had in almost  4 years in business.  Thank you all for your continued patronage and support.

With the election only days away, allow me to encourage you to get out and VOTE.  Regardless of your political affiliation, I urge you all to take the time to research the candidates at every level of government.  For me, I believe their past voting record will be the best indicator as to the agenda they will support if elected.

It was great to see so many of you shooting your defensive ammo after reading last month's tip.  Believe me, some of you found that your defensive ammo just would not run reliably in your firearm.  As far as I know, we were able to correct that with everyone who came to me with the problem.  I believe between the three major brands of defensive ammo we sell we found a fit for everyone.  I am sure glad these issues were recognized in a range environment and not on the street.  Great job!!!

A very special thanks to Jim Parman and Courtney Johnson for putting on a phenomenal Reloading class in October.  The class did not have the attendance that your interest indicated, but that did not alter the program presented by these very talented gentlemen.  The equipment alone that they brought into the classroom made the class worth attending.  The students that attended were treated to a very comprehensive and informative evening.

They are prepared to teach this class again.  However, we would like to have a larger class size commitment before we reschedule another one.  If you would like to participate, please provide your contact info to Peggy.

To those of you that answered my request for ideas on ways to increase the female participation in our scheduled activities, THANK YOU!  We are always looking for ideas and continue to solicit your input.  Look for us to implement many of the suggestions you sent in.  Looks like a number of you would like a  mid-day or morning "Woman's League".  Please take the time to provide Peggy more info as to possible days and the time of day that would work best for most of you.  We are pretty much open to any ideas you have.  Please send your suggestions to:

NOVEMBER Defensive AMMO
Shoot-up Competition

hollowpoint

As promised in last month's newsletter we will conduct a month long competition designed to encourage you to shoot up your Defensive Ammo.  As we discussed last month, the only way you know if your defensive ammo will work in your firearm is to try it.

I am so serious about this that the winner will receive a $200 gift certificate good for any class or classes we offer at CTS.

It is absolutely critical that you prove your ammo and firearm compatibility.  This should be a fun way to accomplish what may be a life saving step and win a prize at the same time.

The competition will be limited to 20 rounds as that is the number of rounds in a defensive ammo package.  You can shoot the course of fire any time and as often as you like.  There will be a $2.00 entry fee that will be donated to the OASIS woman's shelter in Post Falls.

Just let our staff know you want to enter and they will provide you the target and course of fire.  The competition will be conducted on the honor system and bragging rights will go to the victor.

Each time you enter you will be given a ticket.  On Dec 1st we will draw a winning ticket from the entries and that person will win a $200 gift certificate good for any training course or courses we offer.

Concealed Carry
Street Survival Skills

The first CCW Street Survival Skills class is behind us. A very special thanks to all of you who attended.  I appreciate your trust and confidence in our ability to offer cutting edge programs.

I believe everyone who participated in this course was lee fofadequately challenged.  In fact, after the class was over, 4 students immediately went to the sales counter to sign up for the next class to take it again.

Picture to right is Lee letting me know she has had enough.

This class is an introduction to the street tactics that are most likely to be used in a real defensive scenario.  It is a course that has a lot of one-on-one Instructor-student firearm manipulation drills.  Most of the shooting in this course is accomplished at ranges of less than 10 feet.  Most of these drills take place while the support hand is either grappling, hitting, or throwing an item of distraction.

Picture below is Steve holding me at gunpoint. (airsoft)

steve fofI encourage all CCW holders to consider this class.  The skills you will learn in this course will empower you and help keep you and your family safe.  This is a very hands-on class with the majority of the 8 hours of instruction taking place on the range.  Students MUST possess a current Concealed Carry Permit in order to register for this course.

Classes on the Schedule

On the 6th of December we will again offer our Home Defense Shotgun Class.  Typically we only offer this course twice a year.  We don't expect to offer this class again until Girls classSpring/Summer 09.

The shotgun is widely thought of as the ideal home defense firearm.   This 8 hour class limited to 10 students will clear up any misconceptions about the ability and deployment of the home defense shotgun.

Students pattern their shotguns and learn to effectively operate and fire under no stress and high stress situations. Topics of instruction include shotgun safety and responsibility, recoil control, marksmanship skill development, shooting positions, speed and tactical reloading, malfunction drills, target engagements, threat assessment, and shotgun modifications/accessories. In addition to learning the shotgun's attributes, this course will teach you the shotgun's limitations.

The student will be introduced to Close Range Engagement Techniques (CRET), reality based scenarios, 360 degree coverage and low light shotgun applications.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dec 27th is a day to mark on your calendar as well.

Defensive Hand Gun II
is again on the schedule and def hgeveryone who has completed Def HG I is eligible and encouraged to attend.

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in CTS-201. Students will learn and practice the skills and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets.

If you are serious about home defense or your personal defense as a whole, consider these exciting courses.

Diagnostics To Some Common Shooting Errors

Most of the shooting errors I see at the range are a failure to properly apply the two most important shooting fundamentals: sight alignment and trigger press. However, other factors may also cause a shooter to have problems in properly delivering a shot to the target.  The shooting situations listed below assume that the handgun and ammunition are functioning correctly, that the handgun sights are adjusted properly and that the shooter is right-handed. The shot groups for a left handed shooter will appear on the opposite side from the shot groups as described here.  Here are some possible causes to your misses if you are aiming for the center of the target but, are producing hits in the specific quadrants called out below.

SHOTS in Lower Left Quadrant: This pattern is caused when the shooter jerks the trigger, causing the front-sight to dip low and to the left before the bullet leaves the barrel. To correct this type of error, the trigger must be slowly pressed until the shot fires, being careful while pressing not to disturb the sight alignment and sight-picture.

SHOTS in 9 o'clock position: This pattern is created when the shooter does not properly place the index finger on the trigger. In such cases, the shooter has a tendency to press the trigger at an angle instead of straight to the rear. This improper press causes the muzzle to shift to the left, with the shots striking in the 8.30 to 9.30 zone.

SHOTS in Upper Left Quadrant: This is caused by 'riding the recoil'. This is where the shooter anticipates the recoil and makes the handgun recoil before it really happens. This type of pattern can also be caused by improper follow-through, in that, the shooter releases the trigger finger too soon and may flip the finger forward, causing the front-sight to rise to the left. Errors of this nature will usually produce shots in the 9.30 to 12 o'clock zone.

SHOTS in Upper Right Quadrant:  Here the shooter has 'heeled' the shots high on the target. This error is caused by anticipating the shot and, at the last moment before firing, giving the handgun a slight push with the heel of the hand.
The front-sight moves up to the right and the bullets strike the target in the 1 o'clock to 2.30 zone.

SHOTS in the 3 o'clock position: Here the shooter 'thumbs' the handgun. Just as the shot begins, the shooter pushes the right thumb against the side of the frame, causing the aligned sights to move to the right.

SHOTS in the Lower Right Quadrant: This target illustrates what happens when a shooter's grip tightens as the trigger is pressed. This target area is known as the 'lobster' area - just as a lobster's claw clamps together, the shooter's hand clamps or snatches at the last second. This movement causes the front-sight to dip low and to the right, pushing the shots to the 3.30 to 5 o'clock zone.

SHOTS directly below the point of aim:  The shot string in the 5 o'clock to 6.30 area is caused when the shooter 'breaks' the wrist - another form of anticipation. The shooter expects the handgun to recoil at a known instant and tries to fight or control this anticipated recoil by cocking the wrist downward. The shooter may subconsciously believe that the recoil can be lessened by holding the wrist down. This shot group can also be caused by a shooter who relaxes too soon.

SHOTS everywhere - No distinct pattern:  A peppered target is often produced by a beginning shooter. A new shooter usually does not consistently repeat one particular error, but instead commits many different errors. The result is a target with shots scattered in many places. Such a target may be caused by the shooter's inconsistency, including changing the grip between shots, focusing on the target instead of the front-sight on some shots, failing to align the sights properly and so on.

GIFT Certificates May Be The Answer gift box

In most issues of this newsletter I talk about a new product or at least highlight a product of interest.

This month I want to discuss Gift Certificates.  So many of you ask if we offer them.  Well we do and not just during the holiday season.

A gift certificate doesn't mean you don't know what to buy someone, it means you're allowing them to choose what they really want.  Firearms and firearms accessories are very personal, so giving a gift certificate lets the receiver make the right "fit".

It only takes a minute or two to stop in and get your Personalized Gift Certificate in the amount of your choosing.  Put a smile on someone's face no matter what the occassion.
