Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.

Can you believe May is here already.  Here I go again.  Last month I started the April newsletter at the Seattle airport.

This morning as I write this issue I am at the Spokane airport awaiting my flight to Nevada where I will be teaching and taking classes while attending the IALEFI conference.  The acronym is for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors.  Imagine a conference of approximately 500 LE firearms instructors.  My idea of heaven!

With the arrival, finally, of good weather we are excited to offer our Advanced Carbine class on the first of June at Fernan Outdoor range.  I appreciate your patience as many of you have been requesting this class for some time now.  My Advanced Carbine course is designed to challenge both your equipment and your skills.  To do this under the best conditions requires real shooting distances out to at least 400 yds.  Don't let the distance fool you.  There is plenty of CQB type shooting and related tactics.  However, I do want to develop the longer range shooting skills and teach you how to take advantage of the opportunities the AR weapon system provides.  If you are an AR enthusiast, don't miss out on this seldom offered class.

Speaking of AR's, we are about 1 - 2 weeks from receiving our first shipment of Next Generation Arms rifles.  Due to the demand and interest generated by the demo many of you have been testing, we have 10 coming in.  Most are spoken for so don't wait too long before coming in and test firing our demo.  Also, by the end of the month we will have a complete inventory of AR parts, tools, and accessories.  We will soon be known as the area's place to go for all your AR needs.

Thank you all again for the many positive comments on my safety articles that I write for the CDA press.  They appear in either the Saturday or Sunday paper on the first weekend of each month.  I consider it a tremendous privilege to be able to share safety tips with such a broad sector of our community.  Mike Patrick, CDA press editor, supports our efforts and is willing to increase the frequency of the column if reader response indicates a need.

Peggy and I again want to thank you for all the word of mouth advertising you are providing.   We take training very seriously and our desire to provide a safe family oriented shooting facility is our number one objective.  Your continued support and the unbelievable number of new patrons that visit our business every day is so gratifying.  You, our loyal members and patrons are responsible for our success and we appreciate your support.  So continue to spread the word and we will continue to improve as well.

Speaking of safety.  Just a reminder.  If you belong to a group or organization that would benefit from a safety type presentation, call us.  I will speak to any group for free.  Because of my schedule, it is best to schedule such speaking engagements at least 2 months out.

Enjoy this newsletter and let us know how we are doing.  As always, stand tall, shoot straight and be safe.

Ed & Peggy

AMMUNITION, Remanufactured vs. Reloaded

There seems to be some confusion about what remanufactured ammo really is.  A lot of the confusion results when people interchange the terms reloaded and remanufactured.  There are differences and the differences are significant.  I think the timing is right for this article as we are experiencing dramatic increases in the cost of ammunition and ammunition reloading components like we have never seen before.

Many people reload (me included) for their own use.  Some people reload for profit.  The single largest motivator or money saving advantage to the private reloader is the repeated use of the same (or fired) brass.  In fact, I routinely get 8 - 10 reloads out of my brass.  Of course this depends on the power of the load and many other factors.  I am not suggesting that any of you reload your brass 10 times.  I know people that do not get that many cycles and some who get many more than 10.

Looking at the dollars and cents, if you take away the multiple reloads per brass case it would be very difficult to reload your own ammo at a savings over the cheaper commercially available ammo.  However, if you can use the same case over again 8 times, you must now factor the cost of the brass as 1/8 of its original cost.  Get 10 reloads out of the brass and now the cost of the brass for that round is only 1/10 of its original cost.  This has a significant affect on the cost of your ammo.  However, it is this repeated use of the same piece of brass that creates one of the major differences between remanufactured ammo and reloaded.

Remanufacturers do use previously fired brass.  However, their loading, cleaning, component assembly and overall quality control measures tremendously out perform anything we can do on an individual basis.  One of the primary differences is in the inspection of the previously fired brass.  Most of us clean the brass and give it a quick visual inspection.  Some may even gauge it or weigh each case to check for consistency.  A commercial remanufacturing facility will inspect the brass many times and prior to the powder being loaded they pressure test each case with air.  If the case leaks air it is rejected as this is an indication of a compromised case.  They also use a special powder available only to manufacturers.  This is important because if a firearm fails and is sent back to the manufacturer they will check if their warranty has been voided due to using reloaded ammo.  The remanufactured ammo will not void the warranty and the chemical test performed on the gun by the gun manufacturer will support the warranty.

This brings us to our house ammo.  The Center Target Sports' ammo is remanufactured not reloaded.  In the past we used ammo manufactured by HSM in Montana.  We have recently switched manufacturers.  Many of you have noticed a difference and have passed along your very favorable comments.  Thanks for noticing.  We are constantly trying to keep affordable ammo available to our patrons.  The best way for us to do this is by recycling our brass and allowing a top notch remanufacturer to produce our house ammo.  The costs have been so volatile of late that even with our house ammo we are selling at less margin than ever before in an effort to stabilize your ammo costs.

I hope this sheds some light on the ammo issue.  If the ever increasing costs of ammo are causing you to consider getting into reloading, please help us out.  We are also at a crossroads on two important decisions.  We are considering carrying reloading components and equipment as well as offering reloading classes taught by an NRA certified reloading instructor.  If this is an important issue to you, please pass along your comments to us.  Let us know what calibers you are considering reloading and if the reloading class is something you would take advantage of.

Heart of the Warrior!

With the phenomenal growth and participation in our Defensive Series of classes, I wanted to discuss this "Warrior" buzz word that is getting a lot of press lately.  My approach to the Warrior Mindset is not new or even unique.  It is not limited to the members of our armed forces or Law Enforcement either.  In fact, it is a way of life, mantra, or attitude that must be a part of all of us regardless of the label we assign it.

On this subject, much has been written by men much more scholarly than me.  Dan Millman wrote "The Peaceful Warriors Way",  Tony Zimbardi wrote "The Warrior Way", just to name a couple.  We could think of the Warrior mentality from the perspective of the ancient Samurai.

Bushido, literally translated "Way of the Warrior," developed in Japan between the Heian and Tokugawa Ages (9th-12th century). It was a code and way of life for Samurai, a class of warriors similar to the medieval knights of Europe. It was influenced by Zen and Confucianism, two different schools of thought of those periods. Bushido is not unlike the chivalry and codes of the European knights. "It puts emphasis on loyalty, self sacrifice, justice, sense of shame, refined manners, purity, modesty, frugality, martial spirit, honor and affection".

Although insight into its origins can be interesting and helpful it is not my intent here to provide a history lesson.  Let me bring us to the point.  In the simplest of terms WARRIOR as it pertains to my students is a mindset and way of life that is constant and ever evolving.  It is the understanding and realization that trouble may occur at any time and in any place.  It is a natural preparation of both mind and body that instills a NEVER give up and do WHAT EVER IT TAKES attitude to win.

Here are but a few of the practical considerations and traits of the modern warrior as I see them manifested in my students.  As you read the next few lines, do a self assessment.  How do you truly stand up to the test?  There are 4 items I believe you should never leave home without.  Can any of you guess what they are?

The first item goes without saying, the FIREARM.  First and foremost, carry your weapon all the time.  Ok, you have a CCW, but how often do you carry?  How many times has it just not been convenient for what ever reason to not carry?  How about spare ammo?  How many of you carry a spare magazine or speed strip?  Do you want to take a chance that the fight will be over before you empty your firearm?

Now that you are carrying, can you get to your gun?  Have you practiced weapon presentation from under a cover garment?  How about presenting the weapon using only your support hand?  And I could go on and on here, but we don't have the space.

The next item to always have with you is the mini FLASHLIGHT.  There are many varieties and sizes available.  Choose one that provides at least 80 lumens of illumination and a size that will be comfortable to carry.  Practice using the light in conjunction with the firearm and like the firearm you must be able to access the light with either hand.

The CELLPHONE is the next must have item and the reasons I believe you should never be without one are obvious and need not be described here.  A good quality folding lock blade KNIFE is the 4th necessary item.  Many people have very strong feelings both pro and con as they relate to knife carry.  The subject deserves your consideration.  Lock blade knives come in a variety of sizes and design.  Find one or two that fit your dress and lifestyle and carry them at all times.

I believe you should not carry your knife clipped typically to the strong side pocket.  Why telegraph that you have a knife.  If your defense has digressed to a knife fight, you will want every advantage possible.  Stealth or the surprise presentation of a knife could make the difference.

In summary, the message I am trying to convey here is that you can't take a CCW class and think you are ready for a fight.  You can't attend a defensive Handgun class and believe you have the skills to win the fight.  You must practice your skills, train for the fight, and live the lifestyle to not only survive but to protect yourself, the ones you love and the innocent.

A couple of final thoughts - Carry Your Gear!!!  Do you always carry your essential equipment?  Do you have a Go-Bag at the ready?  How about a 72hr survival kit in your home?

Crimson Trace Laser Grips

Recently we have realized a major increase in the sale of Laser Grips.  I believe this increase is the result of many factors.  One of the main reasons is that many of you are becoming believers.  Once thought of as gimmicky or unnecessary, Lasers are now main stream.  The facts speak for themselves.  Law Enforcement hit rates on the range average in the 90 percentile but during an armed confrontation their hit percentage is under 15%.  When equipped with a Laser sighting device those numbers change dramatically.  In fact, law enforcement hit ratios during armed confrontations jump to over 85% when equipped with a laser.

We are often asked about the laser devices that replace parts of your handgun or attach to the light rail.  We do carry the light & laser combination devices made by a number of manufacturers.  However, we do not carry the laser only devices that replace weapon parts or independently attach to the light rail.  I am not a fan of any system that replaces original parts and may compromise the very system we are depending on.

We do carry what I believe to be the very best the laser industry has to offer...Crimson Trace Lasergrips.  Laser sights simply help you shoot better, with greater speed and accuracy, which translates into increased confidence.  I believe they offer great advantages to both the minimally trained and the highly trained.  The minimally trained will have the immediate ability to hit their target with increased frequency during a high stress confrontation.  The minimally trained person will have a very difficult time remembering sight discipline, trigger control and other accurate shooting requirements when under extreme stress.  The laser sight will allow them to overcome many of these disadvantages.

The more highly trained operator will be able to use the laser sights to gain a tactical advantage.  They will be able to maintain accurate target coverage while looking for additional threats, better cover, or avenues of regress.  In addition, they may even be able to deploy advanced target engagement techniques.

Owning a handgun is the first step toward personal defense. But the essence of personal defense is to achieve accuracy amid gunfire, under duress, and with no assistance in sight. All of which begs the question, just how effective are you with a gun in your hand?  Crimson Trace Lasergrips, is the top-selling and best-known brand. The beauty of Lasergrips is that it's the shortest path to fast, accurate shooting when the heat is on and things look dire.

A Crimson Trace equipped handgun can be used with the standard holster you already own.  The installation takes only a few minutes.  In fact, if you buy your sights from us we will install and sight them in for free.  We will soon have a laser equipped gun in our rental case for you to try.  Until then, if you want to try them just tell the staff that you want to try my back-up / carry gun and they will make it available to you.

Dry Fire - The Interest and Questions Continue To Grow

This is a subject I believe deserves another look.  I wrote about Dry Fire practice 3 or 4 months/issues ago.  However, the readership of this newsletter has more than doubled since then and the Dry Fire (DF) question comes up at least once a day at our facility, so, let's visit this subject again.

I believe that dry fire drills are one of the most effective practice techniques you can do to improve your shooting skills.  I am talking "Biggest Bang for Your Buck" here, no pun intended, well maybe. The benefits are tremendous but if done recklessly or if safety is taken for granted the hazards can be tremendous as well.

First let's talk about dry fire and the damage to your gun concerns.  I would not recommend dry fire practice with any 22cal firearm.  The firing pin on the 22 cal is located on the rim, and therefore the firing pin could be damaged when allowed to strike the hardened steel area surrounding the chamber that is normally protected by the soft cartridge rim.   As for centerfire handguns, don't worry about dry firing unless you have an old collectable classic piece that has monetary or sentimental value.  My primary centerfire handguns all have thousands of dry fire cycles through them without any damage to them.

Safety must be the primary concern.   I never dry fire practice in the same room with real ammunition.  I always dry fire practice when I am alone for maximum concentration.  Below are the Safety Procedures I follow every time I begin a dry fire practice session:

  • Establish a practice area and make sure it is free of any live ammunition.
  • Try to insure your privacy when selecting a practice area.  Possibly lock a door or post the area with a no ammunition allowed sign.
  • Clear your firearm and all magazines of live ammunition.
  • Establish an appropriate backstop for the caliber firearm in use.
  • Double and triple check that your firearm is clear and safe.

As you begin to practice, make sure all your movements are realistic.  Train as you will fight.  Do not take any short cuts.  Make every effort to stay true to the techniques you are trying to master.  Wear your duty gear or carry your equipment as you normally would.

The DF practice sequence should follow a natural progression.  Don't move to a new technique until you have mastered the skills you are currently working on.  For example, many people think DF is only a method of mastering trigger manipulation.  This is NOT the case.

DF exercises can and if done correctly, will help you in every aspect of firearm manipulation skills.  They will allow you to develop proper draw techniques, malfuntion recovery, presentation smoothness and many more aspects of gunfighting.

I believe you should DF at least 5 times for every live round fired.  So if you shoot 50 rds a week in live fire, you should DF at least 250 times.  Never DF for more that 10-15 minutes per session.  If interrupted, STOP and start over another time.  Make sure you are calling every shot and you are aiming at a target that allows you to immediately access your DF performance.

If you have any DF questions, don't hesitate to ask next time you are in the facility.  Try this skill development technique and watch your shooting improve before your eyes.
