Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.

Hi again. It is amazing how time flies.  I started this newsletter March 31st sitting at the gate in the Seattle airport waiting for my 2nd delayed flight of the day to Chicago. I am just now putting the finishing touches on it the 16th of May.

I had a great time in
Chicago at the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) international conference.  This year is especially sweet for me as I was invited to teach a session on the importance of and the techniques critical to Low-Light training for law enforcement.  In addition to teaching I took a number of classes during the week long conference.

They tell me spring is here. Not that we would know it by the weather we experienced over the last few days. I am ready for spring, and summer for that matter.  The summer is bringing some exciting changes/events to Center Target Sports.  The most exciting for me is the program in August by John Farnam.   I am so pleased and privileged to announce to you that arguably the best defensive hand gun instructor in the USA if the not the world is teaching here.   John has accepted my invitation to come to North Idaho and share his program with my students.  See the article below.

Thank you for the many emails and phone calls about my monthly safety column in the CDA press.  It is a privilage to be able to promote safety to such a large section of our community.  The column will run in the lifestyle section of the Sunday paper.  I believe it will be in the 1st Sunday of every month.  The press is willing to run the column more frequently if they believe there is enough interest.

Enjoy and Be Safe

Ed

Kubaton (Persuader) Classes Growing

More and more students are signing up for the Kubaton class.  Retail sales have doubled and it seems like we are constantly ordering these popular concealable impact/pressure weapons from our supplier.   As many of you know, statistically speaking, almost 90% of all assaults occur at Key related times.  You know...opening your car door, closing your business, unlocking your home or using your keys to unlock some form of security.

This is the main reason I am so quick to recommend or endorse the Kubaton as a less-lethal option to defense.  Not to imply that you should not consider it a weapon capable of causing death or grave bodily harm.  The fact that the Kubaton is in your hands during the times you are most vulnerable to attack is hard to overlook.  Think of how much faster you would be at offering a defense when the tool of defense is in your hand and need not be located, drawn, or deployed from a non-use standby carry position...for instance your purse or backpack.

One of the aspects of our Kubaton/Persuader class that is very popular is the fact that we encourage our students to bring a trusted friend to class for FREE.  I highly encourage our female students to bring a male friend or male family member they trust.  We do not charge the trusted friend to attend as they serve a very important role in the class.  You guessed it.  They are the student's practice dummy (and I mean that in the nicest of terms).  You see, as the instructor, if a student applied a technique to me and I showed compliance due to pain, the student might think I was overacting to make the student feel good or empowered.  But, when the student sees their husband or trusted friend grimace in pain as a result of a technique, we have served two purposes.

One, the student obviously knows they are capable of applying a technique that works and two, the trusted friend has confidence (having experienced the pain) that their loved one can defend themselves.  Everybody wins.  Students and practice dummies all leave the class more confident and sure of themselves and in their ability to deal with a defensive situation.

Our next Kubaton/Persuader classes are 5-15-08 and 6-12-08.  If you can spare the time, join us for a fun, challenging learning experience.  Don't forget your trusted friend.

Monthly Safety Tip
Keeping Our Children Safe!

With the warm weather approaching (or at least that is what they tell us) many of you have asked for some tips on keeping your children safe.  This month I thought I would cover some of the more common tips on child safety in general and some specific to the internet.

GENERAL SAFETY TIPS

  1. Don't let your child wear clothing with his or her name on it. A child will tend to pay attention to anyone calling him or her by name.
  2. Take photos of your child two or three times per year, including profile shots.
  3. Decide on a CODE word that only you and your child know.  This is a word that your child will be waiting for if you ever send someone to pick them up.  This is a word that will allow your child to know that the person can be trusted.
  4. Do not leave a child unattended while shopping, visiting with neighbors or friends, or running errands. Under no circumstances should you leave a child alone in a car or truck.
  5. Make sure your child always checks with you before going anywhere with anyone.
  6. Make sure your child learns his or her address and phone number at an early age. A second phone number of a friend or relative is also helpful.
  7. Teach your child how to make a collect phone call, and to begin with "Operator...I'm in trouble; I need your help."
  8. If your child is a latch-key child, make sure that he or she knows to keep all doors and windows locked, never let anyone know that he or she is alone, and never let anyone in the house, not even someone claiming to be a police officer or from the fire department. Those kinds of professionals know to forcibly enter in case of an emergency.
  9. Have your child fingerprinted.  Watch for the ID-A-Kid  program advertised in the paper.  It is often available during the Kootenain County Fair sponsored by local law enforcement.
  10. Know whether your child is left or right handed.
  11. Keep a photo and written record of all birthmarks, scars and identifying features, like moles or freckles.
  12. Keep a growth chart of your child; know his or her height.
  13. Make sure your child knows to scream and run if approached in an alarming way by anyone. Your child should be taught to ALWAYS tell you immediately if he or she is approached by a stranger who asks for help, offers candy/gifts, or frightens him/her in anyway. Your child should know to make you aware of anytime he or she feels uncomfortable with ANYONE.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD DISAPPEARS

Try to remain calm. Call 911.  Don't hesitate to call if you know in your heart they are missing.  The quicker law enforcement gets involved the better.  If your child turns up in the mean time, No harm No Foul.

Call your child's friends and anyone you think they may be with.

WAYS TO HELP PROTECT YOUR CHILD WHILE HE OR SHE IS ON THE INTERNET

Personal supervision is the best way to protect your child while he or she is online. For those times when personal supervision is not possible the following rules are suggested:

  1. Make it a condition of use that your child must always ask your permission before using the internet.
  2. Teach your child to never give out personal information online including pictures of anyone. Other personal information that should never be given out online includes real names, age, race, address, city, telephone number(s), names or location of his or her school (including the name of the school's teams), family income, names of friends, passwords, credit card information. Information you send or receive over the internet is NOT private.
  3. If possible, position the computer monitor so that it can be seen from the doorway.  Or you may consider only allowing Internet access from a computer located in a shared area of the house rather than one in a bedroom.
  4. Be SURE that your child understands that he or she should NEVER enter chat areas or have private chats without your permission.
  5. Your child should be taught that if someone says or does something that frightens him or her, he or she should not respond to that person, but tell you right away. Your child should know to make you aware of anytime he or she feels uncomfortable with ANYONE.
  6. An absolute must is that your child should NEVER arrange a face to face meeting with anyone he or she meets online.
  7. Be sure that everyone in your household knows to not open e-mail from anyone he or she doesn't know. Parents should always be shown any such e-mail.
  8. Remember that people are not always whom they claim or appear to be...sometimes adults pretend to be children.

Using software programs that filter or block access to certain web-sites are not sufficient. Ultimately it's up to you to supervise your child's internet use. Be sure to find out about the safety measures that are used anywhere your child has internet access.

A quick word on teenagers.  Provide your teenagers with an easy way out.  What I mean here is, provide them with a way to do the right thing and save face among their peers.  For example, if they are at a party and don't feel comfortable with the situition they are in, they could say "it's 9pm and I HAVE to call my mom to check in".  They call and then can say "My MOM wants me home now".  They get to do the right thing and remain cool with their peers.  You have to do your part here as it needs to be no questions asked.  If they want to explain they will.

All the safety tips in the world are not going to keep anyone completely safe.  At best they are presented here to inspire thought, action and dialog between you and your family members.  It is the constant watchful eye of the parent and those responsible members of our community that will have the biggest impact on our children's safety.

Be Safe.

John Farnam is Coming to Center Target Sports !!!!

Wow!  Am I ever excited.  John Farnam accepted my invitation to teach here at CTS on Aug 15 - 17th.  You may have seen flyers promoting his teaching in July.  However, John had to adjust his dates.  He will be here in August.

Folks, don't miss this class.  Enrollment will be limited and I am sure it will sell out.  John is arguably the number 1 defensive handgun instructor in the world.  It is a privilage to have him here and I sure hope we make a good showing.  John has never taught here before.  Up to this point, if you wanted to take a class with him you would have travel and hotel expenses to say the least.

John will teach his famous "Advanced Defensive Handgun Class".  He will lecture Fri night the 15th and spend all day the 16 & 17 on the range.

Low Light Shooting

Low-Light Shooting

Imagine a subject like low-light shooting or gun fighting ever coming up at CTS.  Ok, Ok, I am joking.  Many of you know of my passion for understanding the dynamics of a lethal low-light encounter.  The fact that I wrote a book on the subject probably gave those of you that don't know me that well a hint about my passion for low-light operations.

Our low-light shooting class is being offered on April 26.  If you have never shot in the dark or at least in low ambient light you owe it to yourself to try it under supervision.  Students are often amazed how difficult it is to see, maneuver, assess targets, maintain situational awareness, and in general, function in the dark with their firearm.  Add stress and the Body Alarm Response (BAR) to the darkness and you have a very unfriendly environment to try and stay alive in.

This is a fun class that will challenge you in many ways.  Don't miss the opportunity to use your firearm in an environment that is statistically the most likely way you will defend yourself.

Retiring an Old Friend 1911

By Mark Arbic CTS  employee

Recently I ran across an old friend I actually never met personally, but recognized him the minute I saw him.  He was in a crowd of other friends, and I might not have recognized him except for the number he was wearing. He otherwise looked like all the other guys, getting old, well worn, sporting a few swapped parts.

When he was new, he was considered the new improved version; some criticized him for the change he represented, others said he would never work out. But soon after, he would become a legend in his field. Sometime after July of 1970, he and his brother were separated. Now history comes full circle and he is rediscovered. Pulled from the auction scrap heap of the internet. (The old adage, one man's trash is another man's treasure).

Proven successful, they started a new serial # range, called the series 70

A Colt government model is reclaimed. The Series 70 serial # 2 is remembered.

In early July of 1970, bell bottom jeans, afros, platform shoes were in, and a new Colt was born. It had a retro milky brown set of wood grained grips, decorated with colt medallions, and a new barrel and bushing. Colt tested the new barrel and bushing, with a series of Government models called the BB series. A pilot run called the BB series ran in 1970, of 1400-1500 pistols. Serial range was 332500-336169 the end of the C suffix range. These were sporting a MKIV series 70 accurized barrel and bushing. Hence the name BB was so given. They were stamped BB on the frame, under the serial number and on the barrel. The barrel was enlarged near the muzzle and the bushing was a new collet type or split. Proven successful, they started a new serial # range, (called the series 70), starting with serial # 70G01001. It's twin brother 70G01002 left the plant and ended up 37+ years later on the auction block. Flying under the radar of most Colt enthusiasts, it sold for an average price, for a Series 70 45.

I am quite pleased to note, the wear on the front strap, and grips. Honest wear, showing it was used for what it was made for. Not a museum piece, hidden with all the other safe queens. Ironically it will be entered into a new collection of Colt government, commercial, and series 70's.

The series 70's Colt's are a striking similarity to the baby boomers. Now being retired and either in assisted living or retirement homes. Some are at the prime of their lives, forgotten and replaced with the new and improved models. History is lost and the stories that should be told. If only someone would bring them out and make new memories with them.

This old friend has not been forgotten, but forever remembered for the contribution he made. Was he actually replaced with a better model? That's debatable. One thing's for sure, a dog is not man's only best friend. This is one Old friend worth remembering!
