Welcome to The Target Zone
The Monthly Newsletter of Center Target Sports, Inc.
WOW!! Can you believe it's 2008. Time certainly never stands still. All of us at CTS hope you had a great holiday season and we wish you the best possible New Year.
I am so excited about the new courses and the changes we have recently introduced. For starters, we added two new employees in Dec. They are both named Mark, so if you are keeping score that's two Marks and two Ricks on staff to keep you guessing.
Predator (Wild Animal Attack) Defense is our newest addition to our curriculum. It promises to be a popular class. Look for more information on this class elsewhere in this newsletter.
Back by popular demand is our 5 day Comprehensive Handgun Course and the Inland Northwest IPSC shooters will again compete at our facility. In fact, this year they will shoot IPSC matches on the 3rd Sunday in January and February. If you have ever wanted to see an IPSC match or have any interest in IPSC, then don't miss their matches in January or February.
My book "Rule the Night, Win the Fight" continues to do well across the country. Thank you all for your support. I am also very excited and privileged to be presenting my Low-Light program at the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) convention in Chicago next month.
Archery anyone? - We are pleased to announce that the CDA Bowman will again shoot their winter league here at CTS. They begin their 10 week league on Jan 7th. Call Bob 659-3525 or Rob 755-3969 for more info.
I hope you find the information in this newsletter to be informative and helpful. Don't hesitate to give us any suggestions on how we can improve this monthly email.
Enjoy and Be Safe.....

IPSC Returns
Looking for some fast action shooting? Well, if you are don't miss the Inland Northwest Action Shooters return to CTS on January 20th.
Many of you remember their one and only appearance at CTS last winter. Well, by popular demand they are back for TWO matches this year. This is an awesome group of action shooters that during the summer months shoot at the Spokane Valley Rifle and Pistol Club. When the weather turns cold, they come to us and shoot in the comfort of the most modern indoor shooting range in the Northwest. They will be with us on Jan 20th and again on Feb 17th.
They always have a good turnout for their events and are always creative in the way they setup the various courses of fire. Not up for shooting the event with them...no problem...Come on by and watch. You will see some of the best IPSC shooters in our region in action.
If you want more info on this very exciting sport or this great group, visit their website http://www.inas.us

5-Day Comprehensive Handgun
Class
Shoot 1500 rounds in 5 days and improve your handgun skills beyond your expectations. When we offered this class in November I thought we would not offer it again until June/July time frame. Well that class was so successful that your requests have not gone unnoticed.
On March 3-7 we will again present what I believe to be the best handgun course available anywhere at any price. The November students shot over 400 rounds on day one and they never looked back for the rest of the week.
This is a course where the learning takes place on the range. You will spend less than 6 hours in the classroom the entire week. The emphasis of this class is to improve your handgun manipulation skills regardless of your present level. Basic shooters get better as do advanced shooters. Everyone improves in this program.
Many of the students in the November class told me to raise our tuition as we are about 25% of what the "big name schools" charge for similar programs. We don't see the need to raise our prices, but I do want you all to know that just because we are about 25% of their tuition don't sell our program short. I don't know how else to say it... This is a dynamic course that will improve your skills. I will put this curriculum up against any of the competition. Contrary to popular belief you do not have to leave the Inland Northwest to get cutting edge training.
Below is a letter I received from one of the students that attended this course in Nov. It is printed here with his permission.
Hi Ed,
I wanted to drop you a line and tell you how pleased I am with the results of the CTS-900 Comprehensive Handgun course I recently took with you. I have so much to practice now, both at home and on the range. I have taken some of your other courses and they have been great! I really found this one particularly useful because there was more time to learn and apply my new skills and knowledge with you right there with me at my side, for five days solid. This means I am able to retain more information and skill, and add to my tool box of tactical skills.
I have considered taking some courses from some of the "big schools" but after doing my research and talking with people that have done so, the value of this course that you offer is tremendous! I could pay four times as much and get some good training I'm sure, but why pay that kind of money when I can get better training from you, here in the Northwest.
Again a big "thank you" for providing this course. I will surely be attending it again ASAP (just because it was so much fun!). And what's more, you even offer it again at no charge for previous attendees. What more could a happy handgunner ask for?

Women Are Not Shy About Shooting
Imagine how pleased I was when I recently entered the classroom to begin a basic pistol class and realized that all but one of the nine students in the room were women.
Way To Go Ladies!!! I can only imagine how intimidated the one male student was. I will say if he was intimidated it wasn't for long as the ladies allowed him to feel welcome right from the beginning. What a fun class. We laughed so much in that class and I was so proud of all the students that I had to get a picture of the group. (See the motley crew pictured above). One student (making a pistol with her fingers) was visiting from Greece.
We take great pride in being a family oriented safe facility to shoot in. However, we can say that all day long and it is meaningless unless the families show up. Based on the fact that family memberships are up over 110% and women are filling the lanes on Thursdays (Ladies Shoot FREE day) we must be doing something right.
Ladies, please continue to explore this awesome sport of shooting. Regardless if your motivation is sport, defense, or just a way to stay active with other members of your family, you will always be welcome here. Peggy and I built this facility with you in mind and we hope you will suggest any improvements we should consider to make you feel even more at home.
Again thank you for all your support!

LED Flashlights
As many of you know, low-light gunfighting is not only a passion of mine, it kind of borders on obsession with me. The fact is 70% of our law enforcement officers killed on duty are killed during the hours of reduced light or darkness.
It goes without saying that if you "Rule the Night...you Win the Fight". Wow that might make a good name for a book someday :-) In order to rule the night, you need a quality flashlight. For a long time, a quality flashlight equaled high dollar. When I finally agreed to help the eGear light company break into the tactical light business, I told them they needed to produce the lights I designed to the standard I specified and at a price we could all afford.
They delivered!!! My biggest motivation to get into this venture was watching police officers purchase quality lights and pay part with check and part with cash, because they did not want their spouses to know what they had paid for a flashlight.
Although the Patrol light with strobe feature that so many of you are waiting for is not quite ready (I am not satisfied with the switch), we have some personal defense lights that are top performers and offer awesome value.
The XT130 is a 130 Lumen polymer bodied light that out performs anything the competition has to offer. The price is $55.00 and as is the case with all eGear lights it has a lifetime warranty.
If you thought you could not get a quality LED light that is powered by AA batteries, think again. You must look at the S-2 light that produces 80 Lumens and costs $45.00. Again it also comes with a lifetime warranty.
I recommend you stop in and look at the large selection of LED lighting systems we offer. eGear has long been known for quality light products in the outdoor industry. They have lights, lanterns, headlamps etc.. for any occasion. They produce one of the best Dynamo (hand cranked power) lights I have ever seen. These lights will even allow you to charge your cell phones in the case of a power outage.
Stop in and check out our lights and look hard at all the eGear products.

Terminal Ballistics Course
Stopping Power, Knockdown Power...
What is the best caliber for a defensive gun?
That has to be by far the most asked question we hear at Center Target.
If you have ever wondered about this issue, then our Terminal Ballistics class is made to order for you. This is the class that puts all the myths to rest. All of the information presented in this curriculum is based on clinical research, input from medical examiners, emergency room trauma physicians, and law enforcement shooting reconstructionists.
In this course you will learn about the elements of bullet wounds and their resultant trauma. The handgun wound cavity will be explored both in its creation and its effect on body function. We will explore the importance of penetration and come to understand why there is not a handgun round made in the world that can knock a human being down unless the person is shot in the central nervous system.
This is not a class that we offer often. We are registering now for the January 19th class. Don't miss this opportunity to separate fact from fiction. www.centertargetsports.com |
Monthly Safety Tip
Criminals Use Intimidation
It is an accepted belief that the crime of rape is actually an "act of aggression and violence, motivated primarily by power or anger, rather than by sexuality."
We are now beginning to recognize that most street crimes are also driven by the pursuit of power. All of us seek power in one form or another. The problem is, power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to have it. They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school. Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity. I want you to limit those opportunities.
Criminal's use weapons of many forms.
He will often use deception to catch people off guard. His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power. Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal. His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist. Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose. The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.
The criminal wants to dominate his victim and will often resort to violence as a last resort. His self-image is at stake. He expects you to comply with his commands. So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply. If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning. But this is typically not what happens.
Raise Your Level of Awareness!
I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe. Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mindset Color Code System. Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple. If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me. Take a second to note the colors and associated mindset listed below.
- White - Unaware and unprepared
- Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation
- Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
- Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange). You take appropriate action.
Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow. Being alert gives you the edge. As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time". I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose. If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.
Learn and train yourself to trust your instincts. If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Don't blow it off. A recent student of mine and his girlfriend were confronted by 3 knife wielding would be robbers in Spokane Valley last month. As he explained the incident to Peggy and I, he credited his heightened state of awareness that allowed him to get his semiautomatic CCW out of the holster and into the situation without having to fire a shot, directly to the class he took at Center Target. His ability to recognize the situation they were in kept them from being robbed or worse.
When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away if you can. If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation. When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply. It is during this critical time that you must act. If you are going to run, run. If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....

Predator Defense
(Attacking Animals)
You asked for it, so with the help of the subject matter experts, we are offering the ultimate class to prepare you to survive a bear or mountain lion attack.
This course covers animal behavior, anatomy, terminal ballistics, target areas, firearm / caliber selection and much more.
During the live fire portion of the class, students will shoot a variety of stationary and moving targets. Realistic animal silhouette targets will be used under various lighting conditions.
Our new ROBOT target will be used to create the ultimate charging animal. You will not be able to predict the attacking animals actions. While controlling the animal target's every move, I will be able to challenge the shooter with false charges, stop and start aggressive actions, and surprise attacks from unknown locations.
If you hunt or recreate in the wilderness or live in the rural areas of our region, this class is for you.
We are now registering for the debut offering of this course in February.
