FOREST PARK HISTORY:

The 1920's was a boom period in Birmingham's real estate development, both downtown and in the suburbs.  Noted developer Robert Jemison Jr. opened his real estate agency in 1903 and among his many neighborhood developments was the beautiful Forest Park area (c 1906) extending from the Red Mountain cut to the floor of Jones Valley.  The winding streets followed natural land contours  and took advantage of views from mountain tops creating what is still one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Birmingham.

FOR WATERCOLOR ARTISTS:

As a student in Auburn University's school of architecture, Bob was assigned the handbooks of Ted Kautsky to learn landscape techniques, and was often instructed to copy his images via a series of pencil sketches.  Copying the images of master painters was a well-respected teaching method at that time although it is rarely taught now. Bob recently ordered the same handbooks used in those classes, added Kautsky's Winsor Blue watercolor to his palette, and has been again practicing those techniques to incorporate into his recent paintings.  Forest Park is the first in a series of watercolors of noted neighborhoods in Birmingham that he is currently painting.

WATERCOLOR RESOURCES:

The instruction methods in pencil and watercolor in Ted Kautsky's  books are still considered to be among the best available to practice technique and Kautsky is still reputed to be among the greatest watercolorists of his generation (1896-1953).

Kautsky's other books are available via Amazon.com (click here).
