If you haven't been to Mooresville, Alabama, it's definitely worth a visit. This historic town near Huntsville remains almost entirely intact although it's also a vibrant neighborhood with well-maintained homes and gardens, two functioning churches, and the oldest operational post office in the State of Alabama. President James Garfield once preached at the Church of Christ pictured above. The entire town is on the National Register for Historic Places.
We attended the recent Walking Tour and as we parked, we were immediately struck by the overwhelmi ng sound of thousands of cicadas, a sound we hadn't heard in a very long time...This was just the beginning of our step back into history. We walked passed blocks of renovated homes both grand and modest, all with beautiful gardens like this one, pictured on the left. And we were treated to a visit to the grand Zeitler-Hill-McLain House, by the current owner, Jerri McLain, whose home was built by the same architect, Carolyn Cortner Smith, who designed and lived in what is now our home in English Village until her death in 1987.
In 1964, Bob Moody painted a watercolor of the tea room in Mooresville, and the Madison County Democratic Women purchased it as a gift for First Lady Lady Bird Johnson, who was visiting Huntsville, Alabama. He is currently working on another series of paintings of Mooresville, which upon completion, will be posted on the website here. Please check back soon!
