Sloss Furnaces define Birmingham's Cityscape
Sloss Furnaces
The stove towers of Sloss Furnaces loom sixty feet into the cityscape of Birmingham.
Illustrated by Bob Moody, 2010

Sloss Furnaces are one of two skyline features unique to Birmingham!

It's going to be a great NEW YEAR!  And we thought we'd start it off with an iconic image of Birmingham and our 15 resolutions (which you can view HERE).

Every city has its skyscrapers and Birmingham is no exception. But when describing the Birmingham skyline, two features make the cityscape uniquely ours - Sloss Furnaces and Vulcan.  Bob has painted Sloss Furnaces many, many times--perhaps more than any other Birmingham landmark.  His latest watercolor features a view from the end of Morris Avenue, as he envisions a connection soon from Railroad Park to the new Terminal Station down Morris Avenue and ending at Sloss Furnaces.

The Furnaces started blasting through 60' stove towers in April of 1882, and by the time of the Louisville Exposition in 1883, they won an award for 'best pig iron'!   Now designated a National Historic Landmark, Sloss tells the story of  Birmingham's early industrial age. But to many locals, it's now known as Sloss Fright Furnaces, or the site of the barbeque cook-off, Stokin' the Fire, or other crowd-pleasing cultural events.  Sculptors use the site for welding and exhibiting, and educational events and tours are scheduled year round.

OUR BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!
