Bijou Theatre
Amos Lee Monday, March 29, 8p.m.

Taking inspiration from soul greats Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers, and folk legends John Prine and Dave Van Ronk, Amos Lee delivers a unique brand of folk-soul music.
Last Days At The Lodge,
his latest record, finds Lee honing and emphasizing all the things that
earned him his strong fanbase from the get go: the songs are sharply
crafted, the melodies memorable and crisp, the lyrics focused. The
production is fuller and less sparse, but the atmosphere remains
uncluttered. He has been featured in the New York Times, been hailed as
an artist to watch in Rolling Stone, and has performed on The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Late
Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Catch him at his best in this historic
room - it'll be a treat.
Ingrid Michaelson and Mat Kearney Tuesday, March 30, 8p.m.
An evening with two phenomenally gifted singer-songwriters:
Ingrid Michaelson
first gained wide exposure through spots on TV soundtracks, including
Grey's Anatomy and One Tree Hill. She's an independent spirit with a
remarkable ear for humor and pathos that continues to grow an ever
expanding fanbase. Everybody, is her most recent album. She's a dream in concert, completely at ease and utterly personable.
Last year, Mat Kearney released City of Black and White,
an album informed by the traveling and performing he did while
supporting his breakthrough album. He writes tunes that take up
residence in your subconscious in a most delicious way. Cara Salimando opens the evening.
Tennessee Shines Wednesday, March 31, 7p.m.
Join us March 31 for Tennessee Shines, presented by Red Kap and
Downtown Knoxville, hosted by Jim Lauderdale and the Red Kap Band!
Mindy Smith's major label debut One Moment More, featured the hit single "Come to Jesus." A vocalist of rare talent and an observant songwriter, Smith's newest release is Stupid Love. Cadillac Sky crosses genres with ease on their newest album, Letters in the Deep, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. These guys are at the top of a lot of folks' "favorite string band" list. The Black Lillies
were here last June. Since then, they've toured the country, spreading
their spooky, Southern Gothic folk-rock around and wowed people
everywhere they performed. The members of Brand New Strings comprise some of our favorite bluegrass players. Their CD, No Strings Attached displays the band's hard-drivin' approach to originals and traditional tunes.

Vanishing Appalachia: Photographs by Don Dudenbostel, Field Recordings by Tom Jester
East TN History Center
A
new feature exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History that
gives visitors an inside look into the places, practices, and
personalities in Appalachia that are fading or rarely seen, such as
moonshining, cockfighting, Mennonite communities, and churches where
they "take up the serpent." The exhibition is based on the photographs
of Don Dudenbostel and the field recordings of Tom Jester. Several
regional historians have contributed to the exhibtion and catalog by
examining the concept and stereotypes people often have of Appalachia
and place the featured subjects in the larger historical context of the
region. Posters, a catalog and a CD of recordings will be available for
purchase in the museum shop.
This exhibit is made possible through a grant from the Gene and Florence Monday Foundation.
The Museum of East Tennessee History and Museum Store hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, Saturday fron 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 1:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday. 865-215-8830

Red Bull Chariot Race
Saturday, March 27, 4p.m., Market Square
Red Bull Chariot Race is not your typical toga party. The inaugural
event debuted in Athens last year...Georgia not Greece...to celebrate Greek
life and school spirit and also mixed in a healthy serving of rivalry.
This
year the event is rolling into several college towns with the first
event taking place in Knoxville on Saturday, March 27th. Local modern
minds are tasked with designing chariots and preparing for their
journey along Historic Market Square and are certain to celebrate with
a party that honors the gods of Mount Olympus.
Each team is
limited to three members and they must maneuver their man-powered
chariot (no horses here) through the designated course in downtown
Knoxville. Teams will race head to head in a bracket format competition
with the top teams advancing to the finals. Speed is important, but
style counts! Each team will perform a short skit to woo the crowd
prior to the start.
The team crossing the finish line first
will be awarded the coveted Hermes Prize. Teams that are not blessed by
the gods with speed shouldn't fret. Two additional prizes are bestowed
on those with other talents: the Archimedes Award will go to the team
that displays the most inventiveness and design and the Greek Spirit
Award is handed out to the team with the most creativity, enthusiasm
and performance.
Arrive early to check out the chariots!
4p.m. - 6p.m. - People's Choice voting 6p.m. - Race begins 8p.m. - Toga after party at Tin Roof!
