Vanishing Appalachia: Photographs by Don Dudenbostel, Field Recordings by Tom Jester
East TN History Center
A
new feature exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History that
gives visitors an inside look into the places, practices, and
personalities in Appalachia that are fading or rarely seen, such as
moonshining, cockfighting, Mennonite communities, and churches where
they "take up the serpent." The exhibition is based on the photographs
of Don Dudenbostel and the field recordings of Tom Jester. Several
regional historians have contributed to the exhibtion and catalog by
examining the concept and stereotypes people often have of Appalachia
and place the featured subjects in the larger historical context of the
region. Posters, a catalog and a CD of recordings will be available for
purchase in the museum shop.
This exhibit is made possible through a grant from the Gene and Florence Monday Foundation.
The Museum of East Tennessee History and Museum Store hours: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday, Saturday fron 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 1:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday. 865-215-8830

Market Square Farmers' Market
Become a Vendor
Want to be a vendor at the 2010 Market Square Farmers' Market? Applications are now available on our blog. For questions, email charlottetolley@hotmail.com.
About CSAs
In the next few issues of this newsletter we will feature some of the farms that offer CSA subscriptions and deliver to the Market Square Farmers' Market. But what exactly is a CSA? "CSA" stands for Community Supported Agriculture. By signing up for a CSA, you are investing in a farm for the year, supplying them with cash at the beginning of the year (literally supplying seed money) and get a portion of that farm's harvest each week throughout the season. It can be a great way to force yourself to try something new and get some crops that may not make it to the market table. CSA's are not for everyone, however. If you aren't prepared to go through 2-5 kinds of greens each week in the spring and fall, perhaps just shopping at the market for what you both want and have time to cook may be the better option. Or you can split a share with a neighbor or friend and supplement with the produce, meat, eggs, honey and baked goods from the farmers' market vendors. For a some advice from the experts, visit localharvest.net to read about how to choose a CSA.
A Place of the Heart Farm

A Place of the Heart Farm has been coming to the Market Square Farmers' since the first year in 2004, and has been offering CSA shares longer than any other vendor. They are Certified Naturally Grown now, and deliver shares for a 24 week season. Located in Pioneer, TN, A Place of the Heart is a beautiful farm with a commitment to sustainability and community. Go to their website to learn more and sign up. Details from the farm: The price for the
24 week season is $720.00. You can pay for the season up front for
$700, or you can pay monthly. If you pay monthly, the price is $120 or
$150 depending on the number of Saturdays in that month ($30 a week).a
smaller share designed to feed a family of 2. Each week would receive
5-7 different vegetables. The price for a half share is $350 for the 24
week season. You can pay for the season up front or pay monthly. If you
choose to pay monthly the cost is $68 or $85 depending on how many
Saturdays there are in the month. This translates to just over $400 per
season.
