Work is underway on the shoreline trail that soon will provide waterfront access for residents of San Juan Passage.  The Guemes Trail project is a joint effort between Gilbane Development and the City of Anacortes.  The first phase of the trail will stretch nearly ½ mile along the shoreline of San Juan passage and the neighboring project to the east.  However, the City plans to extend the trail further east and to the west as opportunities present themselves.  The goal is to connect the Guemes Trail with Washington Park at the western tip of Fidalgo Island and the Tommy Thompson trail that follows the shoreline on Fidalgo Bay near Anacortes' city center.

The first phase follows an old railroad grade that was installed toward the end of the 19th century and abandoned in later years. The paved trail will be 12 feet wide in most areas.  Crews will also clean be cleaning up areas of the beach and planting additional vegetation to protect spawning grounds for indigenous fish.

"We are delighted to see this trail system take shape.  There's nothing more satisfying than being able to have direct access to the water-especially when it's so close to your front door", says Bob Gilbane, Chairman of Gilbane Development. "This is a big part of what makes San Juan Passage such as special community.  This is what the coastal experience is all about".
