February 24, 2010
Greetings!
Jan Godbey
I'm delighted to be with staff full time here at Calvary United Methodist Church as the new Managing Director.  My first week has been busy, enlightening and energizing.  This is an early opportunity to share with you information about the new role of Managing Director, and my early observations of Calvary United Methodist Church.

My initial work priorities include providing staff with administrative leadership and tools to help equip the entire team for the work that is ahead;  developing and implementing processes and follow through for congregational care; and providing a process to oversee, maintain and communicate Calvary's strategic plan and goals.

With the growth of Calvary and an increased workload for staff, it is clear that tools to assist with planning, organization and time management will be welcomed and useful.   As a staff, we'll train and learn together to maximize our potential as a high performing team.  Staff is energized and I've been so quickly impressed with their mix of talents and skills.

A growing church also has deepening needs for care of its members.  We recognize these needs and are defining a role on staff to clearly identify and oversee ways we can, as a congregation, be aware of and respond to needs of our members.  In addition, the 'Everyone connected, everyone in ministry' focus outlined by Randy in the State of the Church address will be addressed with  the formation of this new role.

The strategic plan for Calvary (or The Calvary Plan, for short) will be reinvigorated.  Starting with a clear, strong, Calvary-unique vision statement will add clarity to where Calvary is heading in the years to come.  Input will be gathered from various groups, teams, and  Calvary membership at large in an open format / brainstorming approach to give all who have an interest in participating a chance to share their thoughts.  Each of you will be given an opportunity to share your response to  'what are your future dreams for Calvary?' Your responses will be input to the vision of Calvary being formulated.  Open invitations to fireside chats will be communicated in the upcoming weeks, to be held in the month of March.

Finally, Calvary is a warm, welcoming church.  Lay leaders in the church have already drawn me into current Calvary issues.  They have been supportive and encouraging.  As a congregation, you have been so kind to make me and my family feel a part of the Calvary family, from day one.  Sunday's are such a rich blend of education, strong sermons, and friendly, supportive connections.  Weekday's are filled with many people coming in the doors for children's activities, volunteer opportunities, small groups, and meetings.  Weeknights are action packed times with outside groups coming in, youth activities, education and meetings.  This is an active, vibrant place!

I look forward to meeting you soon, and working together to make disciples for Jesus Christ.

Sincerely,

Contemporary Church Begins in Coffee Shop
Both worship services at Broadway United Methodist Church are as traditional as the majestic stone structure and the 100-year-old sanctuary. When the congregation decided to evangelize people looking for a different spiritual experience, members wanted to do more than just add a contemporary service.
