January 6, 2010
Greetings!
Randy Perry
A new year brings with it the spirit of a fresh start, a renewed vision, significant challenges, an abundance of hope, and wonderful opportunities. While I am grateful for the noteworthy accomplishments, enriching experiences and multiple blessings of 2009, I am truly excited about 2010, a new year and decade!

Our first sermon series of 2010 will begin this Sunday, January 10. Many times the struggles we have in our spiritual journeys stem from less then adequate and even unhealthy concepts of God.
Sometimes we are guilty of getting God wrong! We limit God to the law enforcement endeavors of a traffic cop, or affectionately see God as simply a sweet old man. There are occasions when God means nothing more to us than a talent show judge evaluating our current performance. When things don't quite go as planned we may perceive God to be some kind of cosmic card dealer. Unfortunately, many try to keep God confined or concealed like a divine Jack-in-the-Box.  Each sermon in this series will examine one of these common concepts, how it has developed, why it is popular, and why it falls far short of our omnipotent God.

I believe that you will find this series to be both engaging and enlightening. It will help many to understand their own periodic struggles in the faith and why others find it difficult to believe in God. I look forward to being with you this Sunday at Calvary and throughout this five week series.

Sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Randall K. Perry (bio)

  • Linda Sue Unger, United Methodist Missionary to Nairobi, Kenya will be sharing her story at Calvary on Sunday, January 17 in the Parlor at 11 am.  Our congregation provides financial support to Linda and we are fortunate to have her with us during her short visit in the U.S.
  • Not a Scrip Customer?  It's easy, no extra cost, and it benefits the church.   You pay the face value for a gift card, and Calvary purchases it at a discount.  We have many restaurants, stores, gas stations, coffee shops etc. Think what we could do if every member picked even just ONE location to use Scrip!   Or go with the VISA Reward card that works almost anywhere, and we could do so much more toward that mortgage.  See us at the Scrip table in the Atrium, usually just inside the front doors.

10 Ways to Improve Your Prayer Life
Moses went to a mountaintop to hear God. Jesus fled to the desert. But for many Christians, their most regular place for praying is whatever pew they sit in on Sundays. Work, children, chores and other duties make stopping for prayer seem a luxury.

The Blind Side opens with a jolting image. In 1985 archival footage, we see New York Giants player Lawrence Taylor tackle a Washington Redskins quarterback, inadvertently fracturing the man's leg and ending his NFL career.
