Hello Friends of the Coastal Watershed Council, Check it out - the Coastal Watershed Council has a new logo (displayed above)! We thought long and hard about a graphic, icon, or image that represents what we do, and yes, sort of looks cool. We're pleased to finally share this with everyone, after much deliberation. We hope you like it - we do! Now we're hoping to increase CWC's profile in the community with some new marketing efforts; stay tuned for more on that. If you have ideas on how to increase awareness and interest in our work preserving and protecting coastal watersheds, please share them. E-mail, call (464-9200) or Facebook message me to share what's on your mind.
With a new logo comes some new colors. We're fond of the green, blue and brown in the logo and what they represent to each of us in nature. Other colors to talk about this time of year are red and black. During a time of challenging economic times, it's no secret that many nonprofits are seeing red - meaning budget deficits and losses. CWC is pleased to announce that we ended our most recent fiscal year on June 30 in the black - a net positive on the year! That's an exciting accomplishment in this economic climate. We want to point out that we were only able to achieve this positive outcome with your donations of money. Donations from individuals and businesses are key sources of revenue complimenting our grants and contracts. We're the only nonprofit in the region focusing specifically on watersheds through our stewardship, education and monitoring work. Please consider renewing your CWC membership today to support this special mission, as we begin an exciting new fiscal year. We thank you in advance for supporting CWC. Read on for more watershed-related updates, and enjoy the vibrant colors of summer! Greg Pepping Executive Director

Urban Watch Monitoring Program in Full Swing
With summer at its full height, the City of Capitola Urban Watch Monitoring Program continues to monitor storm drain outfalls for common urban pollutants like bacteria, nutrients, chlorine and detergents.
Assisting with this season's program is CWC intern Barbara Taylor, who is a full time student at UCSC studying Earth Science. She has a strong interest in local watershed issues and has been volunteering for CWC for the past five years. Welcome aboard Barbara!
Volunteers are still needed for dates in July, August and September. It's a great opportunity to learn about everyday impacts on water quality and what you can do to make a difference.
Contact Debie Chirco-Macdonald at djchirco@coastalws.org or (831) 464-9200 to get involved.

Monterey Peninsula Foundation Funds CWC's Youth Camp
CWC is pleased to announce that the Monterey Peninsula Foundation has awarded us a grant to support this year's Trees to Sea Explorers Camp. Camp is ongoing in July and provides youth ages 9-12 years old the opportunity to learn hands-on science skills, connect with nature, be active, have tons of outdoor fun, and appreciate how our everyday lives are affected by the health of local watersheds. 2011 is the second year for this unique summer camp, a logical extension of CWC's work with local elementary and middle schools to promote watershed stewardship.
CWC will partner with the Santa Cruz Boys & Girls Club, O'Neill Sea Odyssey, Adventure Out, Kayak Connection, and local state parks to introduce youth to a variety of ecosystems from the mountain redwoods to the Monterey Bay. Our hope is that these economically disadvantaged youth will develop an appreciation and love for nature, an understanding of how we all depend on healthy watersheds, and dreams for how their lives can change by connecting with their local environment.
In addition to the Monterey Peninsula Foundation grant, CWC has received a generous donation from the Hawley Family Foundation. These funding sources are complimented by donations from businesses and individuals like you. It's not too late: you can sponsor a child to participate in this special environmental education camp today. Donate on-line right now, or contact Greg at (831) 464-9200 or gpepping@coastalws.org for more information. |

Fabulous June Volunteer Appreciation Party!
A great time was had by all at our recent volunteer appreciation party on the CWC deck. It was a beautiful June evening in the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor and a perfect time to
thank our Amazing Watershed Volunteers!

We enjoyed some delicious fish tacos, gave away some fabulous Patagonia shwag and discussed CWC's watershed endeavors. Thank you again everyone for your involvement and support of CWC's water quality monitoring programs. The successes of our past years and the years ahead are due to the dedication of our volunteers!
Stay tuned for more upcoming events and work in our local watershed!
