Wow what a busy summer it has been. We appreciated the chance to hang out with many of you at our recent HarborQ. What a great way to take advantage of our office deck and beautiful setting down here on the harbor. Thanks for joining us for a fun evening of grilling, sipping, and sharing stories about what we're all up to as we "preserve and protect coastal watersheds," that mission we continue to champion.
It won't be long before Mother Nature delivers a new rainy season to this region. That means, among other things, that CWC's First Flush program is ready to go. A big thanks to those of you who have already signed up for and trained to participate in this key event. Now we turn to watching for that first big rainfall.
We're also ramping up our watershed education programs in local schools, welcoming a new CWC staff member, and crafting new and creative ways to engage those of us who live in a watershed (that's ALL of us!). Read on to learn more, and thanks again for your support.

First Flush - Waiting for the Rain
Our thanks go out to everyone who spent time last week at
the trainings for the First Flush. The Dry Run event last Saturday went very
well and field measurements and samples were collected at numerous sites. Team members were able to get out together as a team, and had the opportunity to
visit their storm drain site in the daylight and dry weather. The First Flush event itself will, by definition, be wet, and if the past repeats itself, it'll be at night. That makes the Dry Run an important opportunity to visit in safe conditions, as well as the chance to establish baseline conditions prior to the onset of rain. Collected
samples are currently being processed at the lab.
We are now waiting for the rain. CWC staff is on continuous weather watch and is prepared to contact all First Flush volunteers when the
rain heads our way. We at CWC are very excited about our volunteer crew this
year. Currently we have 59 volunteers signed up for 12 storm drain sites and 3 stream sites. We know they will do a great
job out there during the first rain.
If you've not signed up to participate in the First Flush
and would like to volunteer for water quality monitoring during the first significant rain of the
season, contact the CWC office at (831) 464-9200. Thank you all for your commitment to clean watersheds. And
we look forward to seeing you in the field! |

CWC Welcomes a New Staff Member
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Bridget Posson, CWC's newest staff member. As our
Education Coordinator, Bridget will be educating and inspiring students,
teachers and local community members to preserve and protect their watersheds
through classroom and community events.
Through our continuing BWET grant and new contracts with the
City of Santa Cruz and the City of Capitola, Bridget will work with five elementary and middle
schools to deliver watershed education to students.
Bridget earned a MA in Education and a Bachelor
of Arts degree in Environmental Studies and Earth Science at UCSC. She also has her California teaching certification in biology and life sciences, a huge asset to CWC's efforts to engage and mobilize youth and adults alike. Prior to joining CWC, Bridget shared her expertise and love of the forests,
creeks, and coastal habitats with thousands of students at Exploring New
Horizons Outdoor
School.
CWC is fortunate to have Bridget join the CWC family. Welcome aboard Bridget!

Community Foundation Awards Grant to CWC
CWC is pleased to announce a grant award of $15,000 from the
Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County. These funds will allow CWC to continue our
water quality monitoring programs and improve outreach services and community
education.
Since 1982, the Community Foundation has
worked to make Santa Cruz
County a better place to
live, now and in the future. The Foundation helps local donors to invest wisely
in causes they care about, acts as a convener around key community issues, and
provides grants and other resources to local nonprofits. Funding for grants
comes from several sources including charitable funds established at the
Foundation by local donors and through partnerships with private foundations.
For more information on the Foundation, visit online at www.cfscc.org or call
(831) 477-0800.
CWC would like to thank the local donors who support the Foundation's work. We also share our sincere thanks to the Community Foundation's Board of Directors for their confidence in CWC in awarding us this competitive grant. |
Beer for Water - Help CWC and Have Some Local Brew!
Mark your calendars now: on Thursday, October 14, CWC will earn $1 for every pint of beer purchased at the Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing Company. As part of their Thank You Thursdays program, the Brewery will donate $1 for each beer purchased. Hours are from 12 noon until 10 p.m. so that's plenty of time to enjoy some suds and help CWC's finances. Pints are $4.50, but from 12-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m., pints are only $3. Each beer purchased at any time on October 14 will get $1 donated to CWC.
We thank the Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing Company for their support of local organizations, and for hosting this creative and fun fundraising event. CWC relies on donations from individuals and we encourage you to join our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers, at the Brewery on October 14. If you're not able to join us, we still welcome a contribution to help us preserve and protect coastal watersheds. It's quick and painless via our website, and it helps CWC's important work.
Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing Company is a local, family-owned and operated organic brewery located at 402 Ingalls Street on Santa Cruz's West Side. Food is available at the Brewery through Kelly's Bakery, so come for food, drink, and a good cause on Thursday, October 14. See you there! |
