PROPOSED BYLAWS CHANGE: MEMBER REVIEW REQUESTED

BOMA-Atlanta is thrilled to begin the steps necessary in seeing the association evolve into BOMA Georgia in 2012. Initiating the process requires membership participation. Below, you will find a link to the proposed changes to the association bylaws, which have been reviewed and approved by BOMA's board of directors. Members should review these changes during the next 30 days and then vote on their approval at the January Luncheon and Participation Fair on Jan. 11, 2012 at the W Hotel Downtown. This expansion is an exciting event for BOMA-Atlanta as it will strengthen our position as leaders in the commercial real estate industry. Please review the bylaws changes and contact us if you have any questions. BOMA-Atlanta looks forward to serving members in 2012 as the association moves forward as BOMA Georgia.

2012 TOBY COMPETITION: ENTER YOUR BUILDING!

Now is the time for property and facility managers to earn recognition for their buildings by submitting entries for The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) Awards.

This year's TOBY and Association Awards banquet will be held at the Atlanta Biltmore on Feb. 8 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Registration for the banquet is now available online!

To enter your building, you must fill out the Intent to Enter and TOBY Data Form. To learn more about the requirements, click here.

Also, nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 Association Awards. To learn more about Association Awards categories and how to nominate someone, visit www.boma-atlanta.org/involved/assc-awards.asp.

WORKSHOP REQUIRED FOR TOBY JUDGES

The 2012 TOBY Judges Workshop is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2012 from 3 until 4 p.m. at the BOMA-Atlanta Conference Center. Anyone who wants to be a judge for the 2012 TOBY (The Outstanding Building of the Year) awards will learn about the judging process and the requirements for the various TOBY categories. The workshop will be led by Committee Chair Billie Hollifeld, RPA, CCIM, LEED AP, with Wells Real Estate and Vice Chair Christina Fore with Parmenter Realty Partners.  Attendance is required to be a judge. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ON THE SOUTH SIDE SEMINAR

BOMA-Atlanta has joined with the Henry County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council to co-host the January Henry County Business Boosters Lunch on Jan. 19, 2012 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The topic for this event is Business Development Success on the Southside: The Rest of the Story. A panel of experts will discuss South Metro Atlanta's exciting development opportunities and news. Panelists include:
  • Bob Simmons, chief development officer, Development Authority of Fulton County
  • Greg Wright, president, Coweta County Development Authority
  • Grant Wainscott, director, Clayton County Office of Economic Development
  • Bob White, executive director, Henry County Development Authority.

SHARON SHUFORD ELECTED TO SERVE ON GEORGIA GMIC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

BOMA-Atlanta Director of Events and Professional Development Sharon Shuford was recently elected to serve on the board of directors for the Georgia chapter of the Green Meeting Industry Council. Under Sharon's leadership, BOMA-Atlanta has been able to institute a culture of sustainability. Sharon has made green practices standard throughout the association by featuring locally sourced food at BOMA-Atlanta luncheons; considering a potential venue's use of sustainable systems when awarding bids for BOMA events; and encouraging the use of environmentally friendly products for BOMA-Atlanta's event, marketing and promotional materials. Her professionalism and knowledge have led to the overall improvement of the GREEN Real Estate Summit, positioning it as one of the most successful green events for the commercial real estate industry in the state. BOMA-Atlanta would like to congratulate Sharon on this great accomplishment and thank her for all she has done in service to the association.

NOW ACCEPTING MEMBER NEWS FOR INSIGHT MAGAZINE ISSUE 1 2012

BOMA-Atlanta's magazine, Insight, the Commercial Real Estate Journal, is now accepting member announcements for issue one's member news section. This section highlights various news about BOMA members. The magazine's editorial board invites members to submit these potential news stories for review and possible publication. These stories can include job promotions, professional milestones, awards, baby announcements and other news that recognizes the accomplishments of professionals in the commercial real estate industry.

The BOMA Southern Region is seeking volunteers for 2012 Southern Region TOBY Judges. In order to be a judge, you must have been a judge at the local level. 2012 BOMA-ATLANTA JANUARY LUNCHEON AND PARTICIPATION FAIR

To start 2012 off on the right foot, BOMA-Atlanta is trying something new at the January Luncheon! We all have talents that set us apart and make us valuable to our employer. As a BOMA-Atlanta member, you can sharpen those talents--as well as discover talents you perhaps didn't even know you had--through work on a committee or involvement in a shared interest group (SIG).

Aren't sure which committee or SIG is right for you? BOMA-Atlanta's new January Participation Fair--which will be held in conjunction with the 2012 BOMA-Atlanta January Luncheon starting at 11 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2012--is a great opportunity to learn about how and where you can apply your skills and expertise to benefit the association. Participation in committees and SIGs also offers you the means to expand your professional network and development, thus maximizing the value of your BOMA-Atlanta membership. Further, contributing to BOMA-Atlanta as a volunteer demonstrates your commitment to the industry while showcasing your abilities as a professional.

Active Shooter RoundtableREGISTER NOW FOR THE 2012 WINTER BUSINESS MEETING AND NATIONAL ISSUES CONFERENCE

Plan to join BOMA-Atlanta this year at the 2012 Winter Business Meeting and National Issues Conference, Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. This meeting is open to all BOMA members and is your ideal opportunity to learn, network and participate in provocative discussions on the hottest topics in commercial real estate and to take our message to lawmakers in the nation's capital.

BOMA INTERNATIONAL LAUNCHES BOMA FELLOWS

In 2011, BOMA International launched the BOMA Fellows program. This program is among BOMA International's highest honors. It recognizes and honors BOMA members for exemplary and sustained contributions to the industry, their profession, the community and BOMA at all levels, and is a call to continued leadership and service. BOMA values long-time volunteers and highly engaged members for their contributions to the industry, the association and the community. The program provides recognition to individuals for outstanding contributions and also provides BOMA International with access to the best, brightest and most accomplished BOMA members to serve in a variety of capacities. The program provides these accomplished individuals with a credential they can proudly use and display and is a terrific forum for actively engaging these individuals in BOMA activities and initiatives.

Active Shooter RoundtableATTEND THE 2012 SOUTHERN REGION CONFERENCE

Next year's Southern Region Conference will be held in Jacksonville, Fla., April 12 - 14. Registration is now open through the link below.

The conference will be held at the Marriott at Sawgrass, home of the PGA Tour and the Players Championship. There will be a golf tournament at Pete Dye's Valley Course on Thursday. There will be a networking event on Thursday evening at the beach in Ponte Vedra. On Friday, attendees can take a trip to St. Augustine for the Friday Evening Social Event at Ripley's Believe It Or Not to highlight Friday the 13th.

Education sessions will feature a discussion of advocacy issues directly impacting you and your owners and a disaster preparedness roundtable.

There will be a drawing for all registrants who register between now and Dec. 31, 2011. The winner will receive a golf foursome to play the world famous Players Championship Course at TPC. The certificate will be good for one year. Register on the BOMA Jacksonville website.

Upcoming Events and Educational Courses
 January BOMA-Atlanta Luncheon and Participation Fair

(January 11) The 2012 January BOMA-Atlanta Luncheon sponsored by Full Circle Restoration will feature the installment of the 2012 Board of Directors. There will also be a new member orientation preceding the luncheon at 10:30 a.m. and a participation fair where members can learn more about participation in BOMA-Atlanta committees and SIGs.

Commercial HVAC - 5th Semester

(January 12) Designed for building engineers, the Commercial HVAC course provides an opportunity to enhance service skills through hands-on training. The course will enable beginning engineers and those with experience to become more proficient in the work environment. This is the fifth semester in the five-semester program. This semester covers control systems; electricity, power and efficiency; and rules regulations, standards and laws. A certificate of completion will be issued to show attendance and completion of the required material.

Refrigeration Systems and Accessories

(January 17) This course reviews the basic refrigeration cycle and refrigeration system components, as well as how to operate and maintain reciprocating and absorption refrigeration systems. You will gain the skills and knowledge to describe the principles of refrigeration and identify the performance characteristics of refrigeration components. You will also learn how to establish maintenance processes and troubleshooting techniques. Major topics covered in this course include refrigeration cycles and principles, mechanical components of refrigeration systems and systematic troubleshooting.

Technologies for Facilities Management

(January 18) This course will help you better understand the impact of technology on both workers and the workplace. You will gain the knowledge to evaluate your current technological services and systems, as well as to determine the appropriate technologies your portfolio requires. You will learn about hardware, software, telecommunications systems, computer-aided facility management, security systems, and much more.

Business Development Successes on the Southside

(January 19) BOMA-Atlanta is pleased to join the Henry County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council in co-hosting the January Henry County Business Boosters Lunch, which will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2012. The topic of the January Lunch is "Business Development Successes on the Southside: The Rest of the Story." Join a panel of top economic developers as they give attendees an in-depth look at South Metro's exciting development opportunities and news.

Young Professionals Lunch-and-Learn

(January 26) Are you 35 years old or younger and looking to advance your career in the commercial real estate industry? If so, you should attend BOMA-Atlanta's Young Professionals educational series Lunch-and-Learn. You will have a chance to network with leaders in the field and discuss issues affecting young professionals in the industry. The featured speaker for this event is Cissy Smith with Steps Ahead. Cissy will cover the business etiquette guidelines that make young professionals successful in the workplace.

2012 BOMA International Winter Business Meeting and National Issues Conference

(January 30) The Winter Business Meeting and National Issues Conference provides an opportunity to share ideas, learn from your peers, be a part of shaping the future of BOMA and the commercial real estate industry and to take our message to legislators and regulators in our nation's capital. Join your fellow members for inspiring general sessions, exciting networking receptions and important business meetings.

BTO Lunch

(February 2) Sponsored by SERVPRO of Decatur. BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) Quarterly Luncheons bring together building engineers and others interested in the technical aspects of properly maintaining commercial properties. Each luncheon includes educational coverage of a topic important to the industry. To maximize attendance, each luncheon is held twice at different locations.

BOMA PM 101

(February 3) Explore the world of property management through Property Management 101, a five-day course taught over five weeks. This dynamic course combines classroom-style learning, interaction with industry professionals, and behind-the-scenes tours of metro-Atlanta buildings. It is designed for assistant property and facility managers and others who are interested in expanding their knowledge of the industry.

2012 TOBY and Association Awards Banquet

(February 8) Sponsored by Security Forces Inc. During the 2012 TOBY and Association Awards Banquet, you will see your colleagues recognized for their accomplishments and learn what it takes to manage an award-winning building. This event is not a regular luncheon. Registration and payment is required to attend. This event's seating arrangement has 10 seats per table. If you purchase 10 tickets, please indicate if you would like all seats to be at the same table. Portions of tables purchased along with full tables will be placed as near to the full tables from the same company as possible.
