2011 August Motivational Luncheon Photos Posted

The second annual August Motivational Luncheon was a huge success with hundreds in attendance to hear featured speaker Nadia Bilchik. Attendees were motivated by Bilchik's advice on building rapport, which included both face-to-face communication, as well as online communications through social media.

Take a Tour of Atlanta Buildings

This year's Tour of Atlanta Buildings theme is Buildings that Really Use Technology. Volunteers Needed for Third Annual HomeAid Construction Project

On Oct. 21, 2011, BOMA-Atlanta will partner with HomeAid of Atlanta for the third annual HomeAid Construction Project. This year, BOMA-Atlanta will help renovate two different buildings; the Mary Hall Freedom House, serving women and mothers by empowering them to break the cycle of addiction, poverty and homelessness; and Trinity House - Big Bethel, a residential transitional program designed to serve homeless men with issues regarding drug dependency. SPSU to Hold Construction Management Department Fundraiser

Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) is conducting a Construction Management Department Fundraiser at the Cobb Galleria on Sept. 29, 2011 to raise funds for scholarships and advancement. In attendance will be general contractors, subcontractors, construction vendors and students in the Construction Management program. The event includes cocktails and a silent auction with many high-value items.

Important Education Opportunity for BOMA-Atlanta Members

The third annual Law Enforcement/Private Sector Business Continuity summit will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at the Georgia Tech Research Institute Conference Center and will be FREE to all attendees. Registration will take place at 7:30 a.m. and the program will last from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 4 p.m. This day-long, highly informative summit will address the latest international, national, regional and local threats to law enforcement, businesses, security and our local communities. Get Your Commercial HVAC Certificate

The fourth semester of BOMA-Atlanta's Commercial HVAC course starts Thursday, Sept. 15. Classes will run Thursdays from Sept. 15 through Nov. 17 from 5 until 9 p.m. This course is part four in the five semester series. Participants must graduate all five semester to earn their certificate. The semester do not have to be taken in order and are offered throughout the year. 2012 BOMA-Atlanta Leadership Nominations

This section highlights various news about BOMA members. The magazine's editorial board invites members to submit these potential news stories for review and possible publication. These stories can include job promotions, professional milestones, awards, baby announcements and other news that recognizes the accomplishments of professionals in the commercial real estate industry.

Green Education Opportunities

BOMA is a leader in sustainability. BOMA also offers a variety of green educational opportunities for real estate professionals.

BOMA offers classroom preparation courses for the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP Operations and Maintenance exams. The courses provide an in-depth preparation to take the LEED exams. In addition to in-person training, participants also receive access to 60 days of post-class online exam simulators, which reinforce the knowledge gained by attending the course.

BOMA Property Management 101

(August 19) Sponsored by ValleyCrest, ABM Janitorial, AlliedBarton Security Services, Peachtree Pest Control and ThyssenKrupp Elevator Corporation. Explore the world of property management through Property Management 101, a five-day course taught over five weeks. This dynamic course combines classroom-style learning, interaction with industry professionals, and behind-the-scenes tours of metro-Atlanta buildings. It is designed for assistant property and facility managers and others who are interested in expanding their knowledge of the industry. The Georgia Real Estate Commission has approved this course for 24 hours of Continuing Education Units.

Tour of Atlanta Buildings

(August 23) The objective of the BOMA-Atlanta Tour of Atlanta Building Series is to provide first-hand information about the direction of new construction in Atlanta, what older buildings are doing to improve and operate efficiently, and how these trends impact business. The theme of the 2011 Tour is High Tech: Buildings That Really Use Technology. The tour visits will explore ways technology is used to impact the building's operations positively, and explore how decisions to implement these technologies impacted their businesses. Each building visit will last approximately one hour.

Real Estate Investment and Finance

(August 24) Through this course, you will learn to take charge of real estate investments in order to maximize the value of property. You will develop knowledge about basic financial concepts as they relate to real estate, including valuation, analysis, taxation, depreciation and life-cycle costing. You will learn to evaluate real estate investments and develop budgets that estimate net operating income. You will study the income capitalization approach and cover property taxation costs and strategies to offset these costs. You will also gain skills to conduct discounted cash flow analysis and calculate net present value and internal rate of return.

LEED AP - Operations & Maintenance Exam Prep

(August 30) Replacing the LEED AP for Existing Buildings exam track, the LEED AP-Operations and Maintenance specialty provides a standard for professionals participating in the operation & maintenance of existing buildings that implement sustainable practices and reduce the environmental impact of a building over its functional life cycle. During the one-day class, Charlie Cichetti of Sustainable Investment Group will provide in-depth overview of the recent changes to the LEED AP exam structure and a full day's training that will prepare attendees to take the LEED AP-Operations and Maintenance exam. In addition to this in-person training, attendees will receive access for 60 days of post-class online exam simulators, which will reinforce the knowledge gained by attending this course. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The luncheon will feature a discussion of variable air volume terminal units, valves and actuators, fans and fan motor controls, heat applications, DDC and Pneumatic control, access to components, and troubleshooting. Online Exam Prep: LEED Green Associate

(September 7) The online course covers a variety of sustainability topics, green building best practices, and LEED fundamentals. The course topics are tailored to assist industry professionals in understanding the key concepts of LEED and the essentials to pass the Green Associate exam. Enrolled participants receive comprehensive training as it relates to the LEED Rating Systems, green building design concepts, and strategies. Instructors also provide an overview on recommended study methods, exam-taking skills, and practice questions for the LEED Green Associate professional exam.

September BOMA Bash

(September 8) BOMA Bashes are an informal social and networking opportunity for property managers, facility managers and building engineers, hosted by a select group of allied member sponsors. This bash is sponsored by EPIC Response, Mayberry Electric and Mid America Metals. There is no charge to attend the event, although advance registration is required. Attendance is limited to the first 80 individuals who register. This event will be held at McCormick and Schmick's.

Young Professionals Education Series: After Hours

(September 13) Are you 35 or under and looking to advance your career in the commercial real estate industry? If so, you should attend BOMA-Atlanta's Young Professionals educational series. You will have a chance to network with leaders in the field & discuss issues affecting young professionals in the industry. The topic will be Mid-Year Review: What's Happening in Atlanta This Year. The speaker will be Katherine Lynch of CB Richard Ellis. She will provide an overview that highlights mid-year starts, ownership changes, and the outlook for the balance of the year.

Cooling Tower 101 Workshop

(September 13) Cooling towers represent one of the largest users of water in the commercial and industrial sectors. The efficient operation and management of a cooling tower can reduce water consumption and save energy. The Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District is partnering with Building Owners and Managers of Atlanta (BOMA) to offer a cooling tower workshop for building engineers, facility managers, property managers and local water providers. This workshop will discuss cycles of concentration; performance contracting; cooling tower blowdown optimization; alternative sources of water supply for cooling tower make-up; water quality issues; and alternative treatment technologies

Technologies for Facilities Management

(September 14) When used properly, technology can significantly enhance the performance of your facilities. This course will help you better understand the impact of technology on both workers and the workplace. You will gain the knowledge to evaluate your current technological services and systems, as well as to determine the appropriate technologies your portfolio requires. You will learn about hardware, software, telecommunications systems, computer-aided facility management, security systems, and much more.

Building Engineering 101

(September 14) Sponsored by McKenney's. Get the solid foundation in building engineering you need through Building Engineering 101, a six-day course taught over six weeks. The course combines classroom-style learning, interaction with industry professionals and behind-the-scenes tours of metro-Atlanta buildings. Classes will be held in different Atlanta buildings. Learn from real-life scenarios and gain an understanding of relevant building systems in a course specifically designed to teach beginning building engineers how to be successful in their field.

Commercial HVAC - 4th Semester

(September 15 - November 17) Designed for building engineers, the Commercial HVAC course provides an opportunity to enhance service skills through hands-on training. The course will enable beginning engineers and those with experience to become more proficient in the work environment. This semester covers heating systems. This is the fourth in a five-semester series. You are not required to take the semesters in sequence. The classes may be taken in conjunction with SMA classes or any other seminars. However, the HVAC course does not provide credit towards a BOMI designation.

Green Real Estate Network: September Breakfast

(September 20) The Green Real Estate Network is for individuals who want to further their knowledge of green and sustainable practices. These breakfasts allow attendees to network with leaders in green and learn more about sustainability in the commercial real estate industry. The topic for this breakfast is High Dollar/Higher Return: Talking with Asset Management About Large Green Projects. Speakers will be Steve Harrison, Parmenter Realty; John Smith, Mallory & Evans; & Greg Lewis, Innovative Roofing.

Medical Office Building Manager's Discussion

(September 21) The Medical Office Building Managers Shared Interest Group (MOB SIG) is organized to address the specific interests of medical office building managers and engineers. This group meets quarterly for an informal breakfast and networking session followed by a discussion of specific medical office management issues and current industry trends and challenges. The topic for this breakfast is Medical Office Building Ownership Changes: Coping and Retaining Tenants. Attendees will hear tips & techniques of influencing successful ownership changes. Speakers will be Jason Hinkel, SVP Healthcare with Duke Realty's Southeast Region, Steve Clabough, CPM and VP Regional Manager, Lillibridge Healthcare Services and Mike Lincoln, executive VP with Lillibridge Healthcare Services.

BOMA 360 Performance Program Lunch-and-Learn

(September 22) Looking for ways to distinguish your property in the marketplace and attract tenants as the commercial real estate sector faces today's tough economy? The BOMA 360 Performance Program is designed to recognize outstanding achievement and provide a tool that can be used to market buildings as meeting and exceeding best practices, helping both to keep existing tenants and attract new tenants. Other rating programs only focus on a specific area of operations. The BOMA 360 Performance Program takes a 360 degree evaluation of all major areas of a property's operations and management practices.

LEED Green Associate Exam Prep

(September 27) The USGBC's new LEED Green Associate designation is the first step to achieving LEED AP status. This designation is designed for professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice, and denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction and operations. During the one-day class, Charlie Cichetti of Sustainable Investment Group will provide an in-depth overview of recent changes to the Green Associate and LEED AP exam structure and a full day's training that will prepare you to take the Green Associate exam. In addition to this in-person training, attendees will receive access for 60-days of post-class online exam simulators, which will reinforce classroom knowledge. The course fee includes all training materials, access to the online simulators, lunch and refreshments.

Sports Outing

(September 30) Presented by SERVPRO Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration. The annual BOMA Sports Outing attracts a large crowd of building owners, managers and allied members. The event includes a golf tournament, tennis tournament, dinner and awards ceremony. Throughout the day, participants have an opportunity to network with others in the commercial real estate industry.

Leasing and Marketing

(October 5) In this course, you will gain the skills needed to successfully lease and market building space under favorable as well as adverse economic conditions. You will learn to conduct targeted market surveys; to develop a marketing plan that will please both the owner and the tenant. Leasing and marketing are approached in-depth from legal and ethical angles, as well as from a financial standpoint.
