My El Viento Story

Because of Your Support, I'm Attending Chapman University this Fall!

My name is Adriana Gutierrez and I have been part of the El Viento program since sixth grade. Right now, I'm a senior at Ocean View High School. I'm finishing my last AP tests, writing my graduation speech, and trying to enjoy what's left of high school before moving on to college.

Looking back, it's hard to believe all I've accomplished in four years: managing the Make-A-Wish club, holding the position of senior class vice-president, swimming on varsity, and so much more. What's even more interesting is that all of my accomplishments have spawned from one particular source: El Viento.

I joined El Viento uncertain of what I wanted to be when I grew up and a bit anti-social, but with a gnawing desire to be a part of something greater. From the very first day, the El Viento staff supported me and valued my opinion. I was shocked at the amount of time and effort they took to really get to know each student. That first summer they introduced me to an abundance of activities, such as swim, golf, and leadership training, which opened my mind to a world outside my immediate community. Even though I didn't know it at the time, by having all of these opportunities I was already forming an idea of what I wanted to do in the future, manage my own business.

As I entered high school, my well-rounded background allowed me to jump right into clubs and sports. I joined swim and excelled because of my previous years swimming with El Viento, I became president of the Make-A-Wish Club, using the leadership skills I learned at El Viento to make it the biggest club on campus. I joined the Business Academy, enhancing my knowledge in the real world. It seemed as if everything El Viento introduced me to led from one good thing to another and, the more I participated, the happier I became. Even when the work load was too much and I had a bad day, I persevered and overcame any obstacle knowing my El Viento family supported me 100%.

This year, when I was accepted into great schools such as the University of Oregon, Pace University, and Chapman University, I was thrilled to announce it to Mrs. Enz, Zayda, and all my other El Viento mentors that have helped me in my high school endeavors. I finally decided on Chapman with a major in Business Administration and an emphasis in International Business, because of its up-to-date facilities, small campus size, and top notch academic programs.

I believe that one of the most important aspects about El Viento is that it allows its members to partake in activities outside their own little community. Every summer, I was able to learn something new and exciting whether it was sailing, designing videogames, camping, or making a mosaic. Through these activities, I learned to carry the qualities that define an El Viento student: to be involved, to speak out, to support the community, and to strive for a higher form of education. Seven years ago, I had no idea of the ripple effect El Viento would create and now I simply cannot express my gratitude enough. Honestly, without El Viento's support, I wouldn't be heading off to Chapman with an almost tuition free four-year education.

Thank you so much for your support!!!
