Siblings thrive in El Viento & transform their family
Siblings Oscar and Alba Rodriguez are already thinking ahead to their years after Ocean View High School. That's because El Viento Foundation has given them the chance to see a future. The siblings, accompanied by their parents and brother, Sergio, have visited Cal State Fullerton, UCI, USC, and UCLA with El Viento.
"El Viento has helped our children and we are so thankful. But it's also helped us," said mother, Cecilia Rodriguez. "We've gotten to see things that we would not have otherwise."
Alba, a junior at Ocean View High School, works at her school's cafeteria, swims on the school team, plays school soccer, dances with a folkloric dance troupe, and participates in the school's Business Academy. Besides the college tours, she appreciated summer swimming and sailing lessons provided by El Viento, as well as camping.
"El Viento has made me want to get ahead. I keep the memory of the colleges we visited very clear in my mind. It's a way to see the future," Alba said.
In addition to participating in El Viento, Brother Oscar, an Ocean View High School senior, works 30 hours a week at Del Taco and also works as a deejay. He's already been accepted to Cal State Long Beach, and is waiting to hear from UCI and UCLA.
"First, El Viento was about keeping the kids busy," said father, Jose, a machinist who also coaches soccer. "But now, I think it has been most important in teaching them to be responsible."
