Flu Vaccine Has Arrived!!! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's that time of year again. It's hard to believe that all the craziness that was the flu last year is a memory and hopefully a much more predictable, peaceful flu season is upon us. The great news this year is that the regular flu and the H1N1 flu vaccines are combined into one vaccine. Even better, as long as your child is over 9 years of age or had at least one H1N1 vaccine and had 2 regular flu vaccines in previous seasons, then he or she will only need to receive one flu vaccine this year. We are currently in the process of setting up our flu clinics for October and November. In response to your feedback regarding wait times at the clinics last year, we will be scheduling patients this year to make things run as smoothly as possible.
We pride ourselves on trying to bring the flu vaccine to as many patients as possible. Our goal this year is to vaccinate ALL of our asthmatics and SKIP kids (except the ones with severe egg allergies, of course) and as many other children that we can.
Clinics this year will be run a little differently than last year. We will be scheduling patients into clinics to help alleviate the long lines that we experienced last year. We ask that you please come in at your scheduled time as to keep wait times to a minimum.
We have clinics planned at this time throughout October and November. Each office will have evening clinics as well as some weekend clinic times. Please call to set up an appointment. Westwood Clinics will be on the following evenings in October: October 5,7,12,14,19,28. There will also be a clinic Sunday October 17th. November dates to be announced. Mansfield Clinics will be held on the following evenings in October: October 6, 20. There will be weekend clinics on the 9, 16, 23, 30. November dates to be announced.

- Review your statements.
- Request appointments, see date and time of upcoming appointments.

1 Year Old Visit - New Screening tool For Autism ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are happy to announce that we will be using a new developmental screening tool called the CSBS to screen for autism spectrum disorders in children as young as 1 year of age. Our previous screen started at 18 months. This tool evaluates a one year old's communication skills and social skills. As with any screening tool, we hope to capture anyone who potentially may fall in the autism spectrum and there will likely be times where a child may have a positive screen and may not in the end have the diagnosis of autism. However, we know that the earlier we are able to make the diagnosis the better chance an autistic child's development will progress as desired. Depending on the level of concern, there may be a referral for a hearing screen, Early Intervention and/or a referral to a developmental clinic.

HEALTHY EATING THROUGH THE SCHOOL YEAR ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As everyone's new routines start to settle into place, we at Westwood-Mansfield Pediatrics would like to give you some food for thought in regards to your children's eating habits during the school year. This is a great time to introduce new, healthy ideas into your children's day to optimize their nutrition and limit unhealthy, over-processed foods from their diets.
- As a rule, most lunches brought from home are healthier than what your child might choose to eat in the cafeteria. Try to bring lunch four to five times per week.
- Strive for five. Try to put a fruit and a vegetable into your child's lunch.
- With after-school snacks encourage children to eat a fruit or vegetable first. Cut up vegetables and put them into a "munch box" in the fridge for easy access and put fruits out in plain sight so your children will grab them.
- Make sure your children have a healthy breakfast in the morning. Make it complete with a protein such as eggs, yogurt, or peanut butter as that will help children remain full until their next mealtime. If your child "crashes and burns" before lunch it is probably because their breakfast consisted mainly of carbohydrates (eg: oj and toast , pop-tart, waffle with syrup, a cereal without adequate fiber (should be > 4 grams)) resulting in low blood sugar.
- Milk and water are the best drink choices. Limit juice (even 100% juice), Gatorade, and sodas.
- Try to avoid fast food as much as possible. When parents and children are on the go with afternoon and nighttime sports, it is easy to fall into the trap of McDonalds or Papa Gino's. Consider investing in a crock pot so you can make a healthy meal in the morning, let it cook while you are at work and have it available throughout the evening as your kids are coming and going to their various activities.

Medical Home: What it Means to You ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Over the last two years, Westwood-Mansfield Pediatrics has been working to develop a "medical home" for all of our patients. The American Academy of Pediatrics describes the medical home as a model of delivering primary care that is accessible, continuous, comprehensive, family-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective care. First, we hired Lisa Drenkhahn, our educational care coordinator, and Christine Purcell, our medical care coordinator, who upon provider referral, will help patients and their parents navigate both the educational and medical systems to get the most comprehensive care that they can get. Second, we developed a Medical Home Team which consists of these coordinators, representatives of both the provider and nursing staff, and parents who meet several times a year to hone the mission of he Medical Home. We are trying to improve accessibility through our patient portal and other systems of communication such as our videos on line. We strive to bring you important, relevant information through our educational materials at all of our visits and our well-received educational seminars, including our particularly relevant seminar on concussions coming up in October. Our coordinators are also very busy developing relationships with people throughout the community who may be able to help your child - including therapists, psychologists, and a variety of programs that service children and their families. If you need help getting what you need for you child please speak to a provider and we will help you to the best of our ability. |

6-21 YEAR OLDS: ADHD MEDICATION POLICY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If your child has been prescribed medications for ADHD, there are some important practice policies that we would like you to be made aware of. At times, these policies may seem inconvenient, however they have been made to follow national health care guidelines on the management of ADHD.
- When your child is started on a new medication or if there is a change in dosage of medication it is required that we follow up in the office within 21 days of the medication change. This is to ensure that there are no untoward side effects from the medication and the medication is effective.
- We will only prescribe the necessary amount to get to the next visit when there is a medication change. We realize that often times your co-pay is the same whether you get 2 weeks or 4 weeks. However, when we do not follow these guidelines, patients do not come in until the prescription has run out. This is beyond that 3 week period that national guidelines recommend we follow.
- If you miss your appointment or cancel your appointment after a medication change, we will be unable to refill a prescription until you are seen. The monitoring of these medications is essential to good care.
- Follow-up for established patients who have been on a stable dose and are doing well is at the very least every 4 months.
This will be a change for some long-term ADHD patients. However, we feel it is in the best interest of all of our patients to adhere to these guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation! |
