First Sunday of Advent

8:15 in the Chapel
9:30 and 11 a.m. services in the Sanctuary

Sermon: "Seeing Stars and Missing Figs"

On November 27, we enter into the season of Advent, a time of preparation for Christmas. We may not realize it, but we actually are awaiting more than the return of a holy day. Advent means "coming," as in the Second Coming. Even as we celebrate Christ's first coming to us as a lowly infant, we recall his promise to return to us, to never leave us. And in Mark's Gospel, Jesus speaks apocalyptically of his return. His words are like a bump on the head that awakens us, they make us see stars, signs in the heavens, and the small kingdom things, like a sprouting fig tree, that tells us the kingdom of God is drawing near. His words help us wake up from the numb distractions and busyness of the season.

Preaching: Rev. Paul Seelman

Music: At the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services, the Sanctuary Choir will sing "I Hear the Prophet Callin'" arranged by Choplin.

Advent Conspiracy Study
The story of Christ's birth is one of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love. But what happened? What was once a time to celebrate the birth of the Savior has somehow turned into a season of stress, traffic jams, and shopping lists. Is this what we really want out of Christmas? Based on the book Advent Conspiracy: Can Christmas Still Change the World?, this study invites us to make Christmas what it should be -- a joyful celebration of Jesus' birth. You don't have to read the book to join us on Wednesday, November 30, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in N226. Child care is available with 48-hour advance reservation at 214-368-6348, ext.108.

First Friday

Our next First Friday luncheon is on December 2. Jac Alder, co-founder and executive producer of Theatre Three, will speak with us about his experiences. The luncheon begins at 11:45 in Jubilee Hall. Tickets are $10 and will be on sale in the Atrium this Sunday. More information available at www.phpc.org/firstfriday.

Outreach Communion

Outreach Communion will be served Sunday, December 4, by the ministers and officers of PHPC. If you or someone you know would like to be included, please contact Paula Kirby at 214-368-6348, ext. 113, or pkirby@phpc.org by Wednesday, November 30.
