Reformation Sunday
8:15 in the Chapel 9:30 and 11 a.m. services in the Sanctuary
Sermon: "Semper Reformanda"
Our title is the motto of the Reformed churches: "Always Reforming." Martin Luther, before the council at the Diet of Worms, said, "Your Imperial Majesty and Your Lordships demand a simple answer.
Here it is, plain and unvarnished. Unless I am convicted of error by the testimony of Scripture or (since I put no trust in the unsupported authority of Pope or councils, since it is plain that they have often erred and often contradicted themselves) by manifest reasoning, I stand convicted by the Scriptures to which I have appealed, and my conscience is taken captive by God's word, I cannot and will not recant anything, for to act against our conscience is neither safe for us, nor open to us. On this I take my stand. I can do no other. God help me." On this special day of pipes, drums, and tartans, we again take our stand.
Preaching: Dr. Blair Monie
Music: At the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services, the Sanctuary Choir will sing "Celtic Laud" by Craig Courtney.

This Sunday is Kirkin' o' the Tartans
The Kirkin' o' the Tartans, a very popular service in the life of Preston Hollow Presbyterian, reminds us of our heritage and of the Presbyterian church's roots in Scotland. The Kirkin', at all three morning services on October 30, is highlighted with the playing of bagpipes, a procession of tartans, some readings in the traditional Scottish dialect, and other remembrances of our Scotch Presbyterian heritage. Attendees are encouraged to wear the traditional garb of your family's heritage. Following the 11 a.m. service, there will be a demonstration of Highland dancing, plus a salute to the Haggis, a traditional Scottish food, with samplings in Jubilee Hall. This service has become a great tradition at Preston Hollow. Invite your friends and family to come and share this special day of music and pageantry.

Urgent Prayers Needed for Nicaragua
Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church entered a covenant relationship with CEPAD, the Protestant Council of Churches in Nicaragua, one year ago. As part of the covenant, we promised to pray for them and they for us. The following email prayer request came in from Damaris Albuquerque, the executive director of CEPAD:
"The rains have left 1,600 homes flooded, 249.2 kilometers of highways and roads damaged, almost 134,000 people affected mainly in the north and the Pacific of Nicaragua. The most affected crops are beans, sorghum, coffee, corn and sugar cane. There are at risk some 5,000 hectares of sorghum in the west of the country. 77 people affected with the H1N1 virus in Managua, Leon, Masaya and Jinotega.
The government has said it will take about US $3.2 million to respond to the emergency in its first stage and there have been more than 2,000 people evacuated to shelters in safe places in the affected municipalities.
CEPAD is collecting data from the communities we accompany in the municipalities of San Francisco Libre (Managua), Jinotepe (Carazo), primarily in Villanueva (Chinandega) from which we have received aid application already. Then we will work on an emergency project to meet these families needs and for rehabilitation."
The Nicaragua Mission Team gives thanks that you will pray for our sisters and brothers, our friends, in Nicaragua. |
