Transitions:  Saying Farewell; Looking Ahead

    Dr. Squires and Mary Kaplan

               The planned leadership transition currently underway at the Endowment for Health is on schedule and proceeding smoothly. After a rousing ten-year celebration and tribute to founding president Dr. Jim Squires this past October, Interim President Mary Vallier-Kaplan is now set to officially take the helm at the foundation on January 1.

               "It's a bittersweet time in the history of the Endowment, and Jim's humanitarian philosophies and strong values have left an indelible mark on our organization," said Kaplan. "We are also very happy for and grateful to former Program Director Jeanne Ryer, who has become the Director of the New Hampshire Citizen's Health Initiative." Kaplan emphasized that the Endowment continues to play a key partnership role with the Initiative as a founder and funder. Much of Ryer's past work, which was focused on addressing economic barriers to access and health-system improvement, will carry on in her new role.

An "Exchange" With Dr. Squires

New Hampshire Public Radio's Laura Knoy had a fascinating chat with Endowment for Health President Jim Squires at the October 3 Ten-Year Anniversary Celebration.  Dr. Squires displayed his trademark dry wit and offered his customary gems of wisdom to an appreciative audience at the Concord City Auditorium.

  Moving to Health Equity

                When Program Director Kelly Laflamme announced her plans to hold a "little get-together" called Coffee with Kelly, she expected six or seven people gathered around a table for an informal chat about how the Social Cultural theme is moving to a frame of health equity.

                Two venue changes later, a packed room of more than 40 community partners gathered to hear Laflamme's presentation, which focused on the revised theme goal: Improving health equity and reducing health disparities among racial, ethnic and language minorities in New Hampshire.

Children's Mental Health:  Striving for a Unified System of Care;

Adapting to  New Realities

children's mental health

                The Endowment's ongoing investment in improving the mental health of New Hampshire's children and their families has been underway for several years. That investment goes far beyond the funding which, to date, totals over $4.6 million. The foundation has collaborated with community partners, funders and numerous public agencies to build a baseline of knowledge about children's mental health, raise awareness through research and communication, and support leadership development at all levels.

                Despite the sizeable budgetary and policy issues the state continues to tackle, Program Director Kim Firth is cautiously optimistic that these challenges, if managed correctly, could potentially create the crucible in which a unified system of care can be achieved. And to hear her speak of it, that is truly the only way forward for the work of children's mental health in New Hampshire, as there is currently no one system of children's mental health care in New Hampshire.
