Moving Capably Through the EH Leadership Transition

--by Cordell Johnston, EH Board Chairman

Cordell Johnston

In early May, Dr. Jim Squires announced that he will retire as president of the Endowment for Health at the end of 2011. It is impossible to describe how important Dr. Squires has been to the Endowment, or how much he will be missed by everyone connected to the organization. To much of the public, Jim Squires is the Endowment.

Of course, no one can stay with an organization forever, and Dr. Squires certainly has earned his retirement after a remarkable career in medicine, government, and public health. We hope he will find time to relax, travel, and spend time with his family, even as we are certain he will continue to advocate in some manner on the issues that mean so much to him.

Meanwhile, the Endowment has entered a transition period that is likely to last into the early part of 2013. Given the planning that has gone into it and the time available to implement it, we are confident of a smooth transition, although there undoubtedly will be a few bumps along the way.

Designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet and physical activity, and backed up by empirical research, the program pinpoints the social factors most likely to bring about positive behavior changes that lead to better health and wellness.
