Book Recommendation and
Embracing Franzenfreude

(Not the Facebook kind)
Greetings!

Happy fall! I hope this season finds you productive, healthy, and engaged in what you love most, be it work or play, and hopefully a healthy balance of both.

In addition to being a social media-ist and a firm believer in twitteration , I am also a literary enthusiast, as much the first in line for a new book as early adapter for a new technology. In my free time, I'm always devouring new books, and I'm headed next for Jonathan Franzen's Freedom. (Note: I wrote this before Oprah's Book Club Selection.)

Some of you may be aware of the "Franzenfreude" discussions in the NY Times and elsewhere regarding Franzen's significant and perhaps over-the-top buzz, with writers such as Jennifer Weiner arguing male favoritism and accusing publications of ignoring women writers of similar caliber and talents.

My advice to them: don't worry about it. Weiner has gotten tons of press coverage, and while she is a great commercial writer, she is not "literary," nor does she aspire to such. I have seen many great women writers (many of them my favorites), such as Lorrie Moore, Margaret Atwood, and others, highly touted in the major press and the blogosphere, and they are not lacking for pr and positive buzz. Also, I had the pleasure of attending Franzen's Santa Cruz reading on September 1, the first of his book launch, and was impressed that he was, in short, the real deal.

*self-effacing, and it wasn't just an act

*offered great advice for aspiring writers (read a lot, keep going, read your stuff out loud, don't be discourage
d)
*the chapter he read, which I had also read in The New Yorker, was eloquent, articulate, and perceptive
*the man was hot, literally. I mean he was sweating and kept on going, and even though he continued to sweat, no one brought him a fan. But he was classy about it. He read, he signed, he left.
*All this, in addition to what I've heard otherwise -- that he shut himself in a hotel room for weeks straight to finish The Corrections, and that he lost his voice from reading his dialogue out loud to himself to make sure it was spot on -- all this makes him a stand up literary guy.

So, instead of fighting authors who are fortunate enough and talented enough to find success, embrace Franzenfreude and go with it. If you want acclaim, be that good, work that hard, and don't worry about who the NY Times is covering.

What do you think? Send me a note at carrie@carriefreelance.com and I'll post your comments in my next issue and on carriewriterblog.com.

Don't Worry About It
This fall, I've had the pleasure of providing blog post editing services for Betty Kaufman, an independent wine consultant with WineShop At Home. Betty wanted to get her new blog, bettyswinemusings.com, just launched, off to a great start, and needed an editor's eye to do some fine tuning.

Her rough draft was headed in a great direction, with good content ideas, but I had 3 main edits which I addressed:
1. Voice: she needed to fine-tune who her audience was, and decide what terms would be explained and what knowledge was already assumed.
2. More about her: Betty was really passionate about her business, but needed to be a bit more specific about why. In her revision, she brought out more of herself, so her bubbly personality and enthusiasm shown through, as well as the details of why she loved her business.
3. Clarifications: There were areas where the copy jumped from one thought to another a bit too quickly, and left the reader a tad confused, so I drew arrows there and pointed out she needed to make the connections more clear.
Result: A great revision and copy that sparkled like a freshly poured Riesling.

CJ: How did you become interested in being a wine entrepreneur?

BK: My love of wine started when I was a student at Berkeley. I loved the wine country lifestyle, and had always fantasized about working in the wine industry, but I instead pursued a career in high-tech marketing. In the mid-2000s, I decided it was finally time to pursue my dream. I became an independent wine consultant with WineShop At Home (www.winetastingsandmore.com), a Napa winery that sells its wines through in-home and in-office wine tastings. After nearly 20 years in high-tech marketing, it was quite a wonderful career change for me! It was such a pleasure to get to work with a product I was truly passionate about.

CJ: What do you enjoy most about having wine parties at home?

BK:I love helping people have more fun with wine. It's so enjoyable to share how to really appreciate the wine tasting experience, to really celebrate the senses. When you dig down deep into the sensual experience of tasting, you enjoy the wine that much more. An in-home tasting is very comfortable and relaxing. You're not competing with the wine-country traffic or the wine-country crowds. You get to relax with your friends and really have fun.

CJ: What is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about wine?

BK: Many people are intimidated by wine. They assume they know less about wine than just about anyone else. They assume that their opinion about a wine isn't valid, that they don't know enough to judge a wine fairly. In fact, their opinion about a wine is all that matters. I do my best to help people trust what they are tasting and experiencing.

CJ: Tell me about your new blog.
BK: Betty's Wine Musings celebrates the wine country lifestyle and everything fun about wine. It will cover all kinds of topics, from wine and food pairings, to wine tasting basics, to interesting statistics and fun wine factoids.

Betty's in-home and in-office wine tastings are an incredibly fun way to learn more about wine and discover new wines. If you are a wine lover with an entrepreneurial spirit, you might be interested in joining Betty's team of independent wine consultants, where you will can get paid to help people enjoy wine.
