4 Scary Consequences of Not Optimizing Your Social Media Marketing

1. Not blogging? You should really take advantage of this unique platform.  While Twitter, Facebook, and even Linked In all limit your word and character count, your blog is one of the few places online where you can establish your authenticity, expertise, and credibility --and have the space you need to do it.

2. No Facebook Fan page? 86% of all online retailers currently have pages. And, they are the only Facebook features to be fully indexed by Google, with a #3 Alexa ranking.

3. Not on Twitter yet? There are over 17,000 tweets per minute, and each tweet has its own date stamped URL. That means every time you tweet, you are making a trackable online footprint.

4. Not Linked In? Studies have shown that unsolicited e-mails received through Linked In have over 7x the open rate as that of regular e-mail.

carriepumpkinsEditor's Note

Welcome to my October newsletter! Everyone who knows me knows that two things make me very happy. One is using my communications skills to help you, small businesses and entrepreneurs, to get your message out there clearly and vibrantly. The other is...yes...pumpkins! If you don't believe me, here's me in a pumpkin field as evidence. When we lived back east, I thought autumn was quite a production, but I see here in California they also take it quite seriously. So I hope the fall finds you enjoying your favorite activities, whether jumping in a pile of leaves, carving the aforementioned pumpkin, or simply taking a moment to appreciate life. And let me take this opportunity to wish you...

Lights...Video...Action!

It All Started with the New Flip Camera...

Meet Matt Stewart (the cool guy on upper left) author of "The French Revolution," the first novel to be released on Twitter. See how he did it and tips for publishing in my interview with him.

Here's what happened. I won a Flip at You Tube at their Developers Conference last summer. That got me started filming all kinds of things, and getting to interview folks up close and in person in the same way I'm used to doing for articles, only this was on camera and really fun. I got a trade show "workout" by getting press passes to the American Crafts Council and Slow Food Nation events in San Francisco, and learned a whole lot about wood carving, cheesemaking, felt vases, and olive oil-- not in that order. Then I made good use of my way underused IMovie program, (which by the way really rocks!) and was in video heaven, adding cool floating text, great music, and learning the finer points of cropping. Of course after all that, how could I not start a YouTube channel?  Check it out and let me know what you think, and feel free to subscribe. Let me know your channel, so we can swap sign-ups.

Be Congruent. Really.

Ever had the experience when you talked to someone over the phone for a while, and then you finally meet them in person and it's...well...not the same? It can be an unpleasant surprise. This hold true online as well. There should be a congruity between your online persona, and how someone perceives you, if and when you meet in person. If I have been having
online chats with someone for months, and finally meet them in person and they decide not to even say hello although they know who I am, I am troubled by this. I would rather have someone match the impression I had had from them online, even if they
aren't the warmest fuzziest. It's like getting the economy room at the hotel - no frills - but I knew this when I signed up. Read more...
