 Fun Thanksgiving Facts

*President Abraham Lincoln established the original date for our National Thanksgiving Day celebration in 1863. Congress did not declare Thanksgiving a national holiday until 1941.
*The cranberry got its name because the pale pink blossoms on the plant
resembled a crane's head and neck. The name "craneberry" stuck,
eventually becoming cranberry.
*The average person consumes 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day. (Now that's a lot of turkey!)
*Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national bird.
*Domesticated turkeys cannot fly, however wild turkeys can fly up to 55 miles per hour over short distances.
*There was no milk, cheese, bread, butter or pumpkin pie at the original Thanksgiving Day feast.

 Literary News and Highlights for
the Month of November

*Denis Johnson, currently on a magazine assignment in Iraq, was awarded
the National Book Award for his Vietnam War novel, Tree of
Smoke, published by Farrar, Strauss and Giroux (FSG). His wife, Cindy
Johnson accepted the award in his behalf. Tim Weiner's book on CIA
history, Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA, released by
Doubleday, won the nonfiction award.
*The Writers Guild of America strike entered its second week last week,
impacting not only Hollywood television shows but also book promotions.
On November 5, the Guild's 12,000 members began their protest for a
great share of profits, especially from online sales. Effects of the
walk-out are now reaching into the book publishing industry. I addition
to disrupting late night television shows, the strike has also hurt
book promotions. "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart and the "Colbert Report"
both cancelled interviews with authors of several newly-released books.
*The famous novelist Norman Mailer died on November 10. "The Naked and the Dead," a partly autobiographical novel about World War II," was one of 30 major works he authored. Mr. Mailer was a tireless worker who at his death was writing a sequel
to his 2007 novel, "The Castle in the Forest." If some of his books,
written quickly and under financial pressure, were not as good as he
had hoped, none of them were forgettable or without his distinctive
stamp. And if he never quite succeeded in bringing off what he called
"the big one" - the Great American Novel - it was not for want of
trying, according to The New York Times.
