carrie head shot

Greetings!:
I wish you a happy fall and the best of luck on all your new projects for the coming season. Autumn has always been mypumpkin favorite time of year...maybe it's because of my love for pumpkins,  homemade fresh cider, accompanied by the all important doughnut, or just this urge to jump in a pile of leaves!
Whatever your favorite activities are, make sure you take the time to get out and enjoy them, and try and set at least one goal for yourself of trying something new, or rediscovering a favorite  hobby. My new personal goal is getting back into running and doing my first 5K race in several years, which will enable me to run off all those doughnuts. Wish me luck!

Conference Theme: Connecting the Next Generation of Nonprofit Leaders and
Social Entrepreneurs

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, Carrie Freelance is thrilled to have Sunrise Advisors as its new client. Sunrise is dedicated to helping nonprofits and creative community enterprises thrive and flourish, by providing them with a variety of select, customized services, including marketing, public relations, financial coaching, and more.
The conference drew about 2,000 participants from the Bay area and beyond, and was really was a "boot camp" in the sense that the dozens of workshops featured were jam packed, and really integral to marketing in today's world. We attended sessions on the meaning of "social entrepreneurship,"  (which is not always what it sounds like), issues facing the launch of a nonprofit, and a roundtable I particularly enjoyed on marketing and using today's internet tools, including blogs and e-newsletters.  I also attended an excellent technology session that talked about the importance of social networking, clarifying technology needs before deciding the programs that you use, and the all important thing we all need to do...BACK UP OUR SYSTEMS! We came back  full of energy, with a lot of great ideas and resouces to share with our clients. To view a slide show of the conference, visit Flickr.

....And speaking of Craigslist, I just got hold of a brand new publication,
eMarketingandCommerce.com, dedicated to how the digital revoluticraigon is changing business-to-business marketing. Their debut issue profiles Craig Newmark, founder and chairman of Craiglist, and reveals some surprising facts about "the guy who started it all." His simple "events listing" that he started in San Francisco is now a nationwide phenomena, with a presence in 450 cities around the world. Ask Newmark his secret to success, and it boils down to one thing: "Treat people the way you want to be treated," the article states.

computer woman  What Am I Writing Lately?
I am going to be typing my fingers off shortly, as I was recently assigned 2 feature articles for one of the California State alumni publications. This is my first venture into the "academic" arena, and I'm really excited. In my next issue I hope to have the article links ready for viewing!

  She Knows What Girls Want

Just this week I read about a new web site that is breaking all the records, started by a 17 year-old Detroit teenager who really has a pulse on "what girls want." Her numbers are indeed impressive.  Made more than $1 million. Earns as much as $70K a month. Owns a website that attracts more than 7 million monthly visitors and 60 million page views. Ashley Qualls, Whateverlife's founder, is profiled in the September issue of Fast Company.  Eager to customize their MySpace profiles, girls cut and paste the HTML code for Whateverlife layouts featuring hearts, flowers, celebrities, and so on onto their personal page and--presto--a new look. Think of it as MySpace clothes; some kids change their layouts nearly as frequently. "It's all about giving girls what they want," Ashley says. How cool is that?

Can You Guess the Music?

I recently updated my web site with refreshed graphics, a little regrouping, and yes, some new background music! And guess what? There is a prize waiting for the person who guesses the music. I kid you not. Here are 2 hints. Those who know me well know that I lean toward the esoteric New Age kind of music, such as Windham Hill (although that's not what it is.) The second hint is that the composer's initials are S.T. and he has written the soundtrack for many famous movies. OK, that's 3 hints but who's counting. Please e-mail me with your best guess at carrie@carriefreelance.com, and don't be shy!
Pet of the Month-"Kenny"
kangaroo
Back by popular demand, I bring you Pet of the Month courtesy of the San Francisco Zoo, "Kenny the Kangaroo." Kenny enjoys long hops, acai energy drinks, long distance travel (particularly to Australia), and is currently reading the latest Amy Bloom novel.  Soon he will be headed to Fashion Week in New York, where he will preview the latest in pouch designer wear. Do you have a cute pet who deserves to be Pet of the Month? Send your photos in to carrie@carriefreelance.com, and they may be featured here!
