Help Save the Gray Wolf Today!

Hello WRR members,

We are writing to you today to inform you about two new pieces of legislation being considered in Congress that have the potential to threaten the continued survival of the gray wolf.

Representative wolf photoDenny Rehberg of Montana has introduced two bills that if passed, would strip the gray wolf of Endangered Species Act protection. Congress has never removed an animal from the endangered species list, and doing so now would set a dangerous precedent.

Please join us in opposing this legislation by emailing the draft letter below to your Representative. Feel free to alter the language of the letter to make it your own. And be sure to include your name, address, and phone number at the end of the letter.

Dear Representative,

It has come to my attention that legislation has been introduced which would threaten the continued survival of the gray wolf. I am writing to express my opposition to H.R. 509 and H.R. 510 sponsored by Rep. Denny Rehberg (MT), as I believe that these bills will expose our wolf population to further degradation and harm. As you know, the gray wolf was hunted to near extinction during the previous century. In fact, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was created because of the urgent necessity to preserve the gray wolf and other similarly situated species.

But now, just as the gray wolf is starting to show some initial signs of making a population comeback, this legislation would allow for the same wrong-headed and inhumane management techniques that landed the gray wolf on the endangered species list in the first place. The language contained in H.R. 509 and H.R. 510 is also completely without precedent. No single species has ever been removed from the endangered species list through legislative means.

If these dangerous bills become law, the entire ESA framework is at risk of political manipulation. For these reasons, I urge you to join me in opposing H.R.509 and H.R. 510.
