December 7, 2010
Greetings!
We hope that you and your family, human and non-human alike, are sharing a wonderful holiday season. As another cold front moves through Central Texas, we are working hard to be sure that all of the animals in our sanctuary have a warm and comfortable place to bed down for these long winter nights. With the holiday season also comes the never-ending question of what to give our loved ones as gifts. There is no greater gift than one that gives care and comfort. That is what you give when you sponsor an animal in the name of someone or give a gift membership to Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation. All sponsorship packets come with a certificate, an 8x10 photo of the animal you have chosen, and that individual's personal background story and natural history. We can send the gift packet directly to the gift recipient or to you to place under your tree. These gifts allow us to continue to care for the injured and displaced wildlife that come to us as well as the companion animals for whom we find caring homes. Also, the WRR online store is full of wonderful gifts that you can give for the holidays. Please browse our "aisles" to find the right gift for everyone in your family circle. You can do two good deeds at once by shopping at the WRR Store. We have a wide selection of merchandise including children's items, home and garden décor, books, ornaments and apparel. All proceeds from the sale of merchandise benefit the animals, and you will have doubled your pleasure knowing that not only have you given someone a wonderful gift, but you have also given a gift to the animals at WRR. Don't forget that it takes truckloads of supplies to keep our 187-acre facility functioning throughout the year. We appreciate donations of goods from our Wish List. Donations can be accepted at WRR in Kendalia, dropped off at our Sherman Animal Care Complex at 137 Earl in San Antonio, our Squirrel's Nest Resale Shop at 255 S. Main in Boerne, or call (830) 336-2725 for days, times, and directions. If the idea of holiday shopping makes you tingle with excitement then please do not forget to visit our Squirrel's Nest Resale Shop, open Tues. - Sat., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m. You will find gently used items of all types including clothing, books, home decorations and jewelry. And, again, the proceeds benefit the animals. Everyone at Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation wishes you Happy Holidays!

New Arrivals at Wildlife Rescue
Over the last few months we have had inquiries from some regarding the imminent demise of Wild Animal Orphanage (WAO) in San Antonio. While our names are sometimes confused with one another, we want to assure you that WAO and Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation are in no way, shape or form associated with each other and are completely separate organizations and that the problems that have been such a constant presence with them are in no way associated with us. WRR is alive and well, thriving thanks to your support and our high standards. The WAO board of directors voted recently to dissolve the WAO sanctuary, which is located in northwest San Antonio.
Wildlife Rescue and many other reputable and financially stable animal protection organizations across the country are making every effort to ensure care and homes for their animals. WRR has received and is providing sanctuary for at least six female Rhesus macaques and four mountain lions. We are in the process of getting all of them acclimated to their surroundings and introducing them to their new enclosure companions. We are excited about giving these amazing animals the life they deserve. | | New Macaque Enclosure |

When the Planets Align
When a bag flew out of the window of a passing car, the last thing a concerned citizen expected to find was nine helpless kittens. All nine where brought to Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation emaciated, covered in fleas, and suffering from severe upper respiratory infections. These little kittens needed a lot of medical care and attention and thanks to the generous donations from people who heard about the kittens and reached into their pockets to help, eight of them recovered beautifully. As you can see, they were given the names of planets by the care staff here - probably because they are out of this world cute. Some are still looking for homes so if you have room in your home and your heart for one (or more) of these amazing survivors, please contact LeeAnn Goette at (830) 336-2725 or at Leeanng@Wildlife-Rescue.org.

WRR Interns Save Stella
Usually, animals who have not had a chance to receive antibody-rich colostrum (i.e., mother's first milk) experience health-related difficulties, and Stella, who was rejected by her mother, was no exception. She was very ill when she came to WRR, but everybody pulled together and did everything possible to get her well again! Vet staff spent time researching the best ways to make her better and clinic staff closely monitored Stella for any changes in her condition. WRR interns spent a lot of extra time just loving on her and taking her out for fresh air and walks. Many interns came in on their off time to care for her, and Stella's well-being was a frequent topic of discussion in the intern housing! This is a perfect example of how a group of people who care about animals so much can have a positive impact on an animal's life. Stella is doing great now, and can look forward to many happy years roaming with the sheep below-the-gate, uncropped tail wagging! In fact, our little Stella has taken a liking to one of WRR's free roaming black vultures. Stella is a smart girl and knows that vultures are not threatening and can be very friendly to animals and people alike. Vultures, both turkey and black, are highly sociable, intelligent and compassionate birds. They have been seen bringing food to their fallen comrades when one of them suffers an injury or illness. We welcome their presence here at the WRR Sanctuary as we appreciate their beauty and respect the fact that they know they are safe here. Now you can see Stella and her friend together everywhere they go. Stella will even look back and wait while her friend catches up when they are on a stroll.
