This annual fund raising event enables Church of the Holy Family to continue its community outreach efforts that support Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN), a shelter and a self-sufficiency program for homeless families, serving the Denver metropolitan area since 1997,and Mary's Hope Workshops, an ecumenical organization offering education about healing and recovery from the spiritual wounds of childhood trauma. This year Holy Family will be hosting this event at our church to ensure that the proceeds go to our outreach communities. In 2007, Holy Family received the Marilyn Sandholm Little Things Mean a Lot Award from the Aurora Action Coalition for Community Services. This award is presented to individuals or groups who consistently help others and don't expect to receive recognition for their efforts. Thank you for your support! Springtime in the Rockies
April, 2010. Snowing
here in Centennial, CO. Three inches on
my car when I got up--and it's still coming down. Diane's daffodils are trying to bloom...underneath the snow.
Yesterday my neighbor planted her basil
plants. Tomorrow it is supposed to be
60F and raining. I don't know what
surprises Spring holds for you, but this is Springtime in the Rockies.
Sometimes that's how the healing journey feels. We think we're going along just fine, getting
healthier, and BAM! we find ourselves back where we were before--back in the
winter of our pain.
Just when we think things are getting better, we
react--badly--to an old trigger. Or, we
realize that the old fear we thought we'd already dealt with, had actually only
been stuffed behind a wall of busyness.
It is a chore to drag ourselves out of bed. We cry --or rage--over nothing. We fall back into our old childhood roles:
the Perfectionist, the Underachiever, the Superhero, the Scapegoat. We begin to doubt our feelings and memories. We fall prey to the messages of the old
tapes. We wonder if we have made any
progress at all.
And it all feels quite hopeless.
But take heart. This
spring snow is not like the cold, lingering snow of another season. It comes, gets our attention, slows us down
perhaps, and forces us to get out our tools once again: the snow shovel, ice
scraper, gloves, jacket....But it doesn't stop the advent of spring.
And neither does this switchback stop our healing
journey. Remember, it is a spiral. This turn of events will get our attention,
slow us down perhaps, and, hopefully, encourage us to get out our tools once
more: journaling, drawing with fat kindergarten crayons, body work, spiritual
direction, therapy.
I once knew a
teacher who said, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."
It takes courage, and persistence, and toughness to do this healing work. Sherry says, "It's the hardest work
you'll ever do. And it is worth it."
As I sit and watch this heavy wet snow fall and weigh down
the branches of the great fir trees outside the window, I am thankful for the
ministry of Mary's Hope, which empowers survivors to shake off the snow that
weighs them down, and to continue on the journey toward wholeness and
health.
"In the depths of winter I finally
learned that within me
there lay an invincible summer." Albert Camus

What The Labyrinth Taught Me About The Healing Journey
By Henry Drake MA, LPC Each step is special, yet ultimately the same. They only
become different when you try to "judge" where you are along the process. The
end is really no different from the rest. Take each step along the path and trust. When you try to
decide if it is "right" or is it moving you in the right direction; what do you
know of God's plan? Sometimes you have to move towards the outside in order to
get to the middle. Stop
and look around, some of the coolest stuff is at your feet right now --- Do not
hold out for the middle. Sometimes on the path you are very near the center
even if you are nowhere near the end of your path. Keep
on walking, until you stop--- then at some point, walk some more, and stop
again. Be
all that you are right now!! When you are able to do this, then you never
really leave the labyrinth; or the grace of God!!
