Ski Tips from Warren
By Warren Souther, NSAA Adult Ski School Director

Winter is delivering a spectacular snowfall this year, are you getting the most out of it? In otherSki TIps words, can you ski the trails and enjoy the fantastic grooming that your trail pin has paid for? Or do you find yourself struggling to stay upright, always searching for balance and getting worn out in the process?

For those of you who answered to the latter, consider this warm up exercise that helps with balance, promotes movement and hopefully will let you start enjoying the trails more.

Start with your feet together, side by side. Move your hips in a circular movement around your feet , clockwise, focusing on moving from your ankle. It should feel like you are doing the Hula Hoop movement. Do this about ten times clockwise and then ten times counter clockwise.

Then separate your feet to about shoulder width wide and repeat the circular movement around your feet. Do ten repetitions clockwise and then another ten counter clockwise.

The movement you are practicing should be the movement you utilize to balance when on the trails whether you are skating or track skiing. Children's center of mass is higher, so we learn to use our head as the balancing point. As adults, we tend to do the same thing, which results in an inefficient movement. Instead, lead with the hips like you are dancing down the ski trails to achieve better balancing movements from the ankles. Give it a try some time. For more personalized tips on skiing, join us for a lesson!

A few nice words...

Junior Nordic Program: "With a heavy heart,  I must ask you to please withdraw W from next session. We realize that there is not time for this and the school team and all the other activities and homework..... I do not want to deprive another child of the opportunity to enjoy Junior Nordic. We have had such a wonderful experience w

ith the program."
Ann, 8-year Jr. Nordic parent

Biathlon: "The US Biathlon Association would like to commend you for a job well done.   The 2012 World Junior Trials were conducted in a very professional manner.  The grooming and snow conditions were excellent, and the timing services, resolution of penalties and results production was fast and accurate.  I'm not sure how you arranged for excellent weather- lots of snow, 10F and very light wind- but that was really good as well :)."
Pietr Bednarski, USBA

Junior Nordic Program: "Thanks for a great time! My girls went from moving from Oklahoma and never having seen a ski, to zipping down hills and loving it, plus I loved having an excuse to ski too :)!" Sarah

Grooming: "Thanks to each and every one of you for your part in making the 5th annual speedskate-skate ski duathlon a success. It was looking like the copious quantities of snow were going to make things difficult. However, the NSAA groomers did a phenomenal job of keeping the ski course in great shape." Peter H, event organizer

Grooming: "What a season we are having. I've skied just about every trail in town lately, it has been fantastic. Good on the groomers I say." Mark

Grooming: "I just skiied Beach Lake Trails in Chugiak. WOW!!!!!!! What a great job grooming! Best this season. Please pass on a word of thanks to the groomer." Jeff

Adult Ski Lessons: "I thought it was an awesome value and a really fun time."

SKAN 24
Ski Kincaid All Night
March 24-25, 10am-10am

Maybe you've heard about 24-hour races, but never thought to be a part of one? This is your chance to give it a try in a fun and safe environment! What's really great about the SKAN is that there is no safer way to test your endurance than with a 6K lap format and aid available every 3K. You'll will never be stranded in "no mans land" if you bonk, as there will always be other people around to keep you motivated, heated tents and buildings to warm up in if you need a break, and food and drink available at all times. If this makes the event sound daunting, don't worry- these concerns are mostly for the few who entertain the idea of skiing solo.

The SKAN 24 offers 6, 12, and 24-hour time frames and allows teams of up to 8 people. There are 3 raffle prizes awarded every 3 hours throughout the event, plus more at the awards ceremony. Participants ski on 2 different loops, alternating every 6 hours and run in reverse the second time.

This year the SKAN 24 lands on Swedish Waffle Day, and in celebration of this we'll be serving HOT WAFFLES Sunday morning! Also, after the success of last year we have picked up even more sponsors for this years event! Hammer Nutrition is supporting us with drinks for our aid stations, TOKO will be present to aid in waxing skis, SteamDot will be providing some of the best coffee you've ever had, Petzl will be there allowing you to demo some of their awesome headlamps, and Madshus is going to be doing demos of their skis! This year we've also hooked up a deal with ABC RV Rentals for the event if you want to RV camp in the parking lot.

If we've sparked your interest in this awesome 24-hour ski race, please check out the  SKAN 24 RACE BLOG or the NSAA website for more information. If you're still not sure about participating this year, but are curious about the 24-hour race atmosphere, we encourage you to at least stop out and have a cup of coffee with us! Mark your calendars for March 24-25; the 2012 SKAN is on!
