Sunday Evening Discussion Group
For about a year a group of members of Beth Or as well as nonmembers has been meeting one Sunday evening a month to discuss Jewish topics of interest. For the past year we have focused on the book "Finding God: Ten Jewish Responses" by Rifat Sonsino and Daniel B. Syme. We have almost completed discussing the book so it is time to select our next topics. The discussions may not focus on a book but on any topic of Jewish interest that we find stimulating.
Please join us to help select the topics and to participate in a lively discussion. For information regarding the next meeting contact Bette Spector (305)382-0762, bettespector@gmail.com, or Gail Manning (305)253-9133, gailm66@bellsouth.net.
Please come and bring your friends. Both Beth Or members and non-members are welcome to attend.

Innovations!
Adult B'nai Mitzvah Class
Several members have expressed interest in a weekly class for adults who have not become Bar or Bat Mitzvah, working toward a group B'nai Mitzvah ceremony sometime in the late spring.
We'd be concentrating on learning specifically what we need to prepare for the ceremony, including but not limited to Hebrew and the prayers and ritual appropriate to the occasion. And, in true Beth Or tradition, we'll have a party!
A date and time for class meetings has not yet been set; currently we would like responses from anyone interested in participating. The class will be open to active Temple members.
Please email the Temple at bethortemple@aol.com or phone the office with your name and contact information at 305-235-1419.

More Innovations!
Would you like to see your Kiddush set on the bima?
Are you sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat?
On your Oneg date, we'd love to see your Kiddush cup and/or candleholders, challah plate and challah cover, on the bima at Shabbat services that evening.
You don't need to have a complete set -- just bring your family's treasures and share the stories behind them with the community on that evening.

Garden and Grounds
House & Grounds accomplishes most tasks, of necessity, using paid labor. But when needs
arise for volunteers we'd like to have your name on a list. In return we promise not to:
a) bug you
b) ask for the impossible.
Please advise Kathy (TBO office: 305-235-1419) of your willingness to provide a bit of help when mutually convenient, and thanks!

Would you like to help in the gardens, particularly on Sunday mornings? Just email Marcy Prince at mprince@miamidade.gov.

Meet the Authors
Children Who Survived the Final Solution by Twenty-Six Child Survivors, edited by Peter Tarjan.
When: Saturday: October 6, 2012, 1:00 pm
(please note, this is a correction from last week's announcement, which had the wrong day)
Where: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation Sanctuary, 7701 SW 76 Avenue, Miami
Why: This is one point of view rarely heard (suitable for all ages. Children are welcome to learn and remember.
Holocaust survivors who were children during the Nazi persecution wrote this collectino of memoirs. Each story bubbled up spontaneously, without an interviewer's guidance; hence, these represent the most permanent memories of their authors' childhood experiences.
This anthology is the work of the twenty-six authors of the individual stories, all survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. The authors are: Johanna Franklin Saper (nee Hirschbein), Rita Bymel, Ruth B. Schwartz, Gunther Karger, Nellie Lee, Anna Blitz, Ruth Glasberg Gold, Tova Goldszer, Magda Bader, George Klein, Jack Baigelman (Beigelman) Rosh Kaplovitz (Zaks), Bernard Mayer, David B. Zugman (formerly Dow, Dov, Dave Zugman), Judy Berkowitz, Arnold Geier, Faye Lazega Stern, Frances Cutler, Louise Oberlender, Suzanne Ringel, Dena Axelrod, Elizabeth Zielinski di Mundlak, Bianca Lerner, Eugenia Shulz Rosen, Yosi Lazzar, and Peter Tarjan.
The book may be purchased from online booksellers and others and will be available for purchase after the presentation. The authors will personally inscribe your copy on request.

Unique Volunteer Opportunity to Bring Comfort to the Sick and Lonely
Discover a remarkable and life-changing opportunity to bring comfort, spiritual solace and joy to people in need. For the fourth consecutive year, The Jewish Chaplaincy Program and Jewish Volunteer Center are seeking volunteers for the Refuat Ha-Nefesh Spiritual Care Program.
Open to those age 18 and older, the Refuat Ha-Nefesh Spiritual Care Program offers practical training on the mitzvah of bikur cholim (visiting the sick) and compassionate visits to people who are lonely or ill. Professional instruction and resources are provided in a group setting by rabbis, doctors and social workers, with topics including the Jewish philosophy in visiting the ill; issues and concerns facing the elderly; Jewish perspective on end-of-life issues and death; Jewish healing rituals; how to handle dementia and depression in seniors with compassion; Jewish medical ethics and more. In addition, participants are able to enjoy three hours a week of hands-on volunteerism in the community.
Beginning November 12, 2012, the program runs through May 13, 2013. Training takes place bi-monthly on Monday evenings at Federation's Stanley C. Myers Building, 4200 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Certificates are awarded upon completion and the training is free of charge.
For more information or to apply, contact the Jewish Volunteer Center at 786.866.8414 or Volunteer@jewishmiami.org. The application deadline is October 31, 2012.
What past participants have said about the Refuat Ha-Nefesh program:
* "You go out to visit someone new and you find a new part of yourself."
* "You will encounter a new part of your future as you listen to the hopes and fears of those fighting health battles."
* "My challenge is to bring some Jewish spiritual feeling into my visits. I feel blessed with the opportunity to spend time with my new elderly friends and allow their memories to become my memories and share in the wisdom and warmth of their lives."

Volunteer Opportunity Encourages Love of Reading
Discover a fun, meaningful way to spark the imaginations of Miami pre-schoolers.
The Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is recruiting volunteers for the United Way of Miami-Dade's popular ReadingPals literacy program.
ReadingPals sends adult volunteers to early education classrooms across Miami-Dade, where they spend one hour each week reading to children. Because many of these youngsters are not yet reading on their own, ReadingPals volunteers are often among the first people who introduce them to the joys of reading and learning.
The 24-week program begins October 15, 2012 and concludes May 10, 2013. Volunteers are required to complete a background check and attend an orientation session, which will provide the tools and training to equip them to become successful and effective readers.
A special Jewish community orientation will be held at the Federation's Stanley C. Myers Building, 4200 Biscayne Boulevard, on Wednesday, October 3, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.
To register, or for more information on other ReadingPals orientations, please contact Jewish Volunteer Center Director Lori Drutz at 786.866.8414 or Volunteer@jewishmiami.org.
To find out more information, please go to www.unitedwaymiami.org/Volunteer/ReadingPals.
You can also watch a brief video here.
The mission of the Jewish Volunteer Center (JVC) of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is to partner with Jewish and communal organizations in Miami to create a culture of volunteerism by providing a central clearinghouse for volunteers in the Miami Jewish community. Guided by the Jewish values of chesed (loving kindness), tzedakah (social justice) and tikkun olam (repair of the world), the JVC works to strengthen the entire community through high-quality, hands-on volunteer projects and service learning initiatives.
