It's All About Sukkot and Simchat Torah
Sunday, September 29: Sukkah-raising at 9:30 a.m. We'll have the sukkah construction materials, bagels and noshes -- bring some foliage and plant-life decorations from home to adorn the sukkah for... Wednesday, October 3: Sukkot Celebration at 6:45 p.m. Share the Sukkot traditions with children and adults over pizza and salad -- bring finger-food desserts to sweeten the evening. Please phone or email the Temple at 305-235-1419 or bethortemple@aol.com if you plan to attend... Friday, October 5: Sukkot Potluck Supper and Shabbat Service begins at 6:30 p.m. Again, for this event, please call or email how many will attend and what dish you plan to bring for the potluck supper. We'll be looking for main dishes, side dishes, salads, desserts. Remember it's vegetarian or dairy for Beth Or Kosher-style. We will have a light Kiddush in the Sukkah, then return inside for a dessert Oneg Shabbat. Our guests the evening will be the Confirmation Class from Christ the King Lutheran Church, led by Pastor Katie, who so graciously welcomed us to their church for our High Holy Days services. Sunday, October 7, Simchat Torah from 6:30 - 8:30 ... will involve a change in the usual Torah School schedule. In lieu of regularly scheduled class that morning, TS students will learn about Simchat Torah at 6:00 pm in a project to decorate for this joyous holiday. We'll have Klezmer music and celebrate our beloved Torah scrolls with dancing! Tishrei Members are welcome to attend any or all of these events as members of Beth Or for this amazing month! |

4) Maestro Henry nods his head, knowingly- new compositions, re-arrangements and old favorites are finally in play.

The Holiday Bazaar Approaches!
The Bazaar committee has out the contract for the November 18th event to numerous prospective vendors.

Children Who Survived the Final Solution by Twenty-Six Child Survivors, edited by Peter Tarjan.

Where: The Unitarian Universalist Congregation Sanctuary, 7701 SW 76 Avenue, Miami
Why: This is one point of view rarely heard (suitable for all ages. Children are welcome to learn and remember.
Holocaust survivors who were children during the Nazi persecution wrote this collectino of memoirs. Each story bubbled up spontaneously, without an interviewer's guidance; hence, these represent the most permanent memories of their authors' childhood experiences.
This anthology is the work of the twenty-six authors of the individual stories, all survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. The authors are: Johanna Franklin Saper (nee Hirschbein), Rita Bymel, Ruth B. Schwartz, Gunther Karger, Nellie Lee, Anna Blitz, Ruth Glasberg Gold, Tova Goldszer, Magda Bader, George Klein, Jack Baigelman (Beigelman) Rosh Kaplovitz (Zaks), Bernard Mayer, David B. Zugman (formerly Dow, Dov, Dave Zugman), Judy Berkowitz, Arnold Geier, Faye Lazega Stern, Frances Cutler, Louise Oberlender, Suzanne Ringel, Dena Axelrod, Elizabeth Zielinski di Mundlak, Bianca Lerner, Eugenia Shulz Rosen, Yosi Lazzar, and Peter Tarjan.
The book may be purchased from online booksellers and others and will be available for purchase after the presentation. The authors will personally inscribe your copy on request.

Adrienne Arsht Center For The Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County to Host FREE Holocaust Studies Community Symposium
The Symposium is part of LIGHT/THE HOLOCAUST & HUMANITY PROJECT and is free for participants
The Program will take place on October 13-14, 2012, bringing nationally-renowned authors and historians to the Arsht Center to share valuable lessons on the impact of the Holocaust

MIAMI, FL - September 2012 - The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, in collaboration with local supporters and national experts, will host a FREE Holocaust Studies Community Symposium at the Knight Concert Hall, starting on October 13, 2012, at 8 p.m., and continuing October 14, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Part of the recently-launched LIGHT/THE HOLOCAUST & HUMANITY PROJECT, the FREE events will provide valuable lessons on the history and impact of the Holocaust through a series of lectures and presentations.
The program will be led by renowned authors and historians from around the country including professor and filmmaker Dr. Michael Berenbaum, National Institute for Holocaust Education historian Dr. William Meinecke, author Dr. Cheyenne Martin, and founding director of The David Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies Dr. Rafael Medoff. The symposium will be moderated by Miami-Dade County Public Schools District education specialist on Holocaust education Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff.
Each segment of the program will take a different look at the Holocaust and its effect on modern day society. The complete program, including times, is as follows:

LIGHT/THE HOLOCAUST & HUMANITY PROJECT is a three-month, county-wide human rights collaboration that is focusing attention on the work being done in Miami-Dade County toward the protection of human rights against bigotry and hate. The initiative was inspired by a critically-acclaimed ballet by the same name which will be performed by Ballet Austin at the Arsht Center on November 3 and 4 as the culmination of the project. "FIRST ACCESS PASSES":Admission is FREE. First Access Passes can be reserved by calling the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305-949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org (limit four per person). The passes provide patrons with first access to seating in the theater until 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, and 9:45 am on Sunday. Seating is "first come, first served" for the performance and passes do not guarantee a seat.
STAND-BY LINE: Patrons who do not have a First Access Pass may join the Stand-by Line beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday, outside the concert hall. Seating, if available, will be opened at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday and 9:45 a.m. on Sunday to patrons in the stand-by line.

Unique Volunteer Opportunity to Bring Comfort to the Sick and Lonely
Discover a remarkable and life-changing opportunity to bring comfort, spiritual solace and joy to people in need. For the fourth consecutive year, The Jewish Chaplaincy Program and Jewish Volunteer Center are seeking volunteers for the Refuat Ha-Nefesh Spiritual Care Program.
Open to those age 18 and older, the Refuat Ha-Nefesh Spiritual Care Program offers practical training on the mitzvah of bikur cholim (visiting the sick) and compassionate visits to people who are lonely or ill. Professional instruction and resources are provided in a group setting by rabbis, doctors and social workers, with topics including the Jewish philosophy in visiting the ill; issues and concerns facing the elderly; Jewish perspective on end-of-life issues and death; Jewish healing rituals; how to handle dementia and depression in seniors with compassion; Jewish medical ethics and more. In addition, participants are able to enjoy three hours a week of hands-on volunteerism in the community.
Beginning November 12, 2012, the program runs through May 13, 2013. Training takes place bi-monthly on Monday evenings at Federation's Stanley C. Myers Building, 4200 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami. Certificates are awarded upon completion and the training is free of charge.
