Hit the Wall
by Lorene Rasmussen

By 5:00 on Friday night, February 23, I hit the wall, both emotionally and physically. To be honest, I felt completely depleted without any replacement available. My own body couldn’t even rise to the occasion in service to the spirit.

Consequently, I found myself in front of the fireplace in a sweat suit while watching my two beautiful grandchildren playing. Needless to say it’s not a good place to be. No doubt you have felt this way sometime in your life.

Remembering what Coach Mike Carlton said back in January, “. . . it is important to balance rest with training. . .,” I made plans to sleep in and not even run on Saturday, but when I saw the sun shining, I knew God had something grand designed for me. So, I went to Shaw Mountain Road around 9:00 am, (about 45 minutes behind everyone else in my running club) and started the 8 mile trek to Rocky Canyon Road.

On my way up, Coach Steve Blake was on his way down. He stopped, hugged me, and encouraged me to stay strong to the task. It wasn’t much but the gesture was all I needed to know I wasn’t alone. I finished the Saturday run, with a smile.

The wind that naturally funnels through the canyon was definitely my enemy, so I ended up walking a major portion of it. The morning was cold but I didn’t miss the reality of the beautiful sunlit canyon walls. When I finally approached the orange “Boise run/walk” cone (4 miles from the starting point), I almost cried. The experience was good and it renewed my spirit and gave me the determined resolve to remain on the trail to the Marine Corp Marathon.

As you can imagine, I have wanted to quit this little goal a few times but haven’t for a couple reasons. First, I’m committed to writing this article since many of you have responded with encouragement and running tips. Another reason I haven’t “thrown in the towel” has to do with the planning model I have adopted to get to the MCM 2007 finish line.

Before I share the model, allow me to acknowledge that not everything successful started with a written plan. There are numerous discoveries and businesses that were considered accidents. Penicillin was accidentally uncovered in a laboratory. Yankee Candle Company began in 1971 by a high school senior that needed to come up with Christmas gifts. The adhesive on the 3M Post-it note was deemed a mistake. Not to mention my own existence. Mom use to tell me I was her favorite accident, of course that changed when #6 child arrived and she named him Scott.

The fact that a plan is not always written does not mean there is no plan. Many times our clients ask us to provide strategic and tactical planning to their efforts because they don’t have a plan. We find more often than not that they indeed do have a plan but it is simply not articulated in a way that makes it useful. In those circumstances we help clients articulate their plan so that they can:
  • Focus their limited resources on the most important activities
  • Properly allocated time to their highest priorities
  • Provide clarity about the organization’s direction
  • Unify the team around common objectives

The Purpose Driven Performance model contains seven elements that allow an organization or an individual align their values, purpose, vision, mission, strategies, goals and tasks to achieve results.

With that said, allow me to take you through how I am using a simplified version of Leadership Advisors’ Performance Driven Performance model.

PurposeWhy are we here and what values do we hold?
“To run the Marine Corp Marathon.”

VisionWhat will we become as a result of our purpose and values?
“To become the human metaphor for the dynamic models we use within Leadership Advisors Group.”

MissionHow will we attain our vision?
“To train wisely for the Marine Corp Marathon and actively compare the models used by Leadership Advisors Group to enhance the running experience.”

StrategyOrganizational objectives that support our mission.
“To train safely and to finish the race with a smile.”

Goal Team objectives that support our strategies.
Join Boise Run Walk
  • Follow a consistent weekly training regimen that develops my ability to successfully run the Marine Corp Marathon.
  • Develop a life long habit of physical fitness.
Task Individual objectives that support our goal.
Many individual tasks that support each of these goals including curling up in front of the fire place when I am tired.

The next time you are faced with a mission or a cause, let me encourage you to step back from it and look at the big picture to consider some of these elements. This way after you “hit a wall” you can rest, regroup, and revisit the purpose behind why you are doing what you are doing, and perhaps resist the urge to quit.

Driven to Perform is #3 in a series of articles that are being featured throughout 2007 in The Leadership Advisor. In April, we will look at international training and how change management has been applied to my mission.

I had a very interesting experience the other day. A client we have been working with in the development of a strategic plan asked me to provide an overview of both our planning process and the results of their planning efforts to the senior executive in the organization. This was the first time that any group within their organization had participated in strategic planning and so my client asked me to share, as part of my presentation, why strategic planning is important. I have to admit that I was caught off guard with the request. Strategic planning has been part of our consulting work for nine years. Prior to that, I assisted in countless strategic planning sessions as a banker. As part of the loan process, I regularly reviewed strategic plans for my customers in order to make loans. However when asked, “why is strategic planning important?” I had to pause.

Fortunately the answers were not far away but it was a good exercise for me to have to articulate the reasons for strategic planning. The word strategy is derived from the Greek word strategia which roughly means “the art of generals.” So strategic planning is the work of leadership. That means that there must be some overriding reasons to engage in the “art of generals.” Here are ours:

To articulate the organization’s overall direction.
When I was young, there used to be a sign along the highway that said: “Lost? Keep going you are making good time.” Sometimes organizations are like that. Not every road an organization takes is the right road and the planning process should help create and, more often than not, articulate the organization’s direction.

To effectively and efficiently reach the organization’s vision.
Part of articulating a direction is clarifying the vision for the organization. Once this is clear then there must be way to effectively and efficiently reach that vision. A strong plan and planning process are integral to that effort.

To prioritize and align limited resources between competing needs.
There isn’t an organization that I know of that has unlimited resources. As such, it is critical that there is a plan (even one that is loosely constructed) to provide for how the organization will choose between competing priorities.

To focus on needed improvements in critical business areas.
The planning process should foster open and honest discussions at all levels of the organization, about what is and is not working well. A good planning process and plan helps the leadership focus on those areas that are strong but need strengthening as well as those areas that are weak and need improving.

To improve our chances of reaching our desired results.
I believe in results. Few things are as motivating to people as producing results that are meaningful. For some organizations results are financial while for others they are non financial. There is no plan that can guarantee results but the probability of success is substantially enhanced with a solid strategic plan.

So here are the five reasons we believe strategic planning is necessary.
  1. To articulate the organization’s direction
  2. To effectively and efficiently reach the organization’s vision
  3. To prioritize and align limited resources between competing needs
  4. To focus on needed improvements in critical business areas
  5. To improve our chances of reaching our desired results

As you consider planning for your organization, I invite you to call and discuss how our Purpose Driven Performance planning process can help shape your organization’s future.
