Dear Friends,
The New Year represents new beginnings--an opportunity to start afresh with renewed inspiration and hopefulness. Our goal is to share with you the teachings and practices that we have found to be spiritually transforming.
In 2012, we have made the intention to widen and deepen our teaching sphere through an Advanced Studies and Teacher Training Course in La Jolla. We will also be offering teachings and practices in new cities!
For those of you in Arizona, Michele will be in the the Phoenix area February 1 - 4 and will be speaking at the Tucson Book Festival in March. Texas Yogis can hear Michele's keynote presentation and experience her workshop in Houston at The Texas Yoga Conference February 17 - 19. (See the sidebar for all upcoming workshops and programs.)
It is our hope that 2012 brings you renewed inspiration and dedication to your spiritual ideals and practices.
Love,
Michele and Mehrad

Got power?
Practicing Certain Poses Creates a Sense of Power
by Mehrad Nazari, Ph.D.
The mind-body connection is a two way influence. The quality of our thoughts/mind affects our physical body and our physical postures affect our mind. New research indicates that holding a pose that opens up a person's body and takes up space will alter hormone levels and make the person feel more powerful and more willing to take risks. This goes a long way in explaining why we feel good and have more control over our lives after a yoga class. Other studies have indicated, for example, that holding an expression, like a smile, can alter one's mood, as can a hunched posture.
"Certain poses actually make you more powerful," said study researcher Amy C.J. Cuddy, a social psychologist at the Harvard Business School, in her recent study published in the Journal of Psychological Science September 2010 issue. This study is part of a field of psychological research called embodiment.
Those who held the high-power poses experienced an increase in testosterone, while their levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, decreased. Testosterone is associated with dominance and tends to rise before a battle or competition and, also after a victory, but not after a defeat. Now the question is where is the battle, who is the enemy that we are preparing to fight? The enemy is the negative mind, self doubts and self criticism. The battle is the daily struggle in the world of duality.

Opening The Tenth Door
Michele's new book, The Tenth Door: An Adventure Through the Jungles of Enlightenment, is a multi-award winning memoir!
From Cleveland to San Francisco, to the crashing surf on the beaches of El Salvador, and finally into the arms of her true love, the ethos of Walt Baptiste's guidance leads us all through the magical Tenth Door. You will not be able to put this book down.
The Tenth Door is still receiving rave reviews:
"Pertinent and compelling. It is a tale of personal strength in the face of doubt, conflict and fear to which many yogis can relate."
--LA YOGA
"The Tenth Door takes turns at being a travel diary, a personal journal of spiritual growth, a coming-of-age tale, and even an adventure thriller (as our first person narrator dodges the growing guerilla insurgency in El Salvador in the early 80s in order to carry out her job duties and her dharma). The most moving and intriguing aspect of the book is how it has been crafted as a loving tribute to the author's guru and his seemingly boundless love, strength and knowledge of the spiritual path. Many yogis do not get the opportunity to physically meet their guru in person although it is said that the guru is always guiding you from within. It was fascinating to watch the guru/student relationship unfold, and as Hébert has expertly preserved the powerful lessons he imparted to her within this book, at times you feel like his messages are meant for you, too. "It was not uncommon while reading this book to feel whisked away to the tropical paradise they'd carved in the Salvadoran jungle: meditation in the stone pyramid, doing yoga by starlight, or watching the sunset while swinging in a hammock. Wherever you are in your journey, The Tenth Door sets a beautiful example of how to follow your heart in order to craft your best life." --New Jersey Namaste News
