SCICN Tip of the Week Oct 2nd, 2008
"The Body Says
What Words Cannot"
This week's tip - "The Body Says What Words Cannot" -- is more than a tip. It is the tip of an iceberg. It represents much of what science and medicine overlook when they put people in boxes with diagnoses. In other words, when people receive mental and emotional diagnoses, no one looks at underlying physical causes. No testing is done for nutrient deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances or neurotransmitter deficiencies. There are so many contributing factors to these problems, beyond life circumstances. This is a serious oversight on the part of many doctors and research scientists.

Twenty-five years ago, one of my professors said, "Behind every twisted thought is a twisted molecule". Perfect example of the brain-body connection. It changed my life and the direction of my studies. I became excited at the prospect of helping people find simple, yet subtle, sometimes mysterious answers to their anxiety, depression, ADD, and other mood and behavioral disorders. And so, this week's newsletter is the first in a series of ten newsletters that discuss the various causes and effects of the body-mind connection.

Thanks for reading.

Understanding How Physical Conditions Affect Behavior and Emotions

Emotional and Behavioral Problems Linked to Physical Imbalances?

"Mental Health in the United States: Health Care and Well Being of Children With Chronic Emotional, Behavioral, or Developmental Problems", Journal of American Medical Assoc, Nov 2005;294:2567-2569.

Two thirds of the participating children with emotional, behavioral and developmental problems also had chronic physical conditions, such as asthma, allergies, diabetes, frequent headaches, hearing or vision problems, or bone, joint or muscle problems.

The study above is a good example of the body-mind connection. It makes sense that people with chronic emotional and behavioral problems would also have certain physical symptoms. In the ideal world, we would address the physical, mental and emotional problems simultaneously. But in this  age of defined specialties, we seem to lose perspective on wholeness. Physical symptoms are overlooked as unrelated to the emotional or behavioral, and vice versa.

In other words, headaches are treated with aspirin or Tylenol, and not linked to a person's behavior or ADHD. Depression is treated with an anti-depressant, and not considered a result of low blood sugar or hypoglycemia. These physical symptoms are clues to both the cause and the treatment of many mental and emotional disorders. They are not isolated during a traditional medical diagnosis. But if they were discovered through other forms of testing, then they could be addressed.  And we would begin to see a lessening of the mental, emotional and behavioral problems. In fact, a whole new world would be revealed.

In this world, the brain and the physical body talk to each other. We are a great bundle of energy with billions of communicating electrical transmissions - not a shell with disjointed organ systems. Most conventional doctors make diagnoses that are going to affect a child or an adult for years to come, with no tests and no correlations to physical body. They don't seem to see the connection between the brain and the body of their patients - the people sitting right in front of them. What a slip-up; what an oversight.

Many adults see this connection. They feel that something is wrong -- physically, when they are depressed, or anxious. They see how they are affected by certain foods, like sugar and alcohol;
they see hormonal connections. The depression or the ADHD didn't just fall out of the sky. Sure, there are life circumstances that play a role, but the physical body also has something to say about that.

Parents also see this connection -- more than the doctors do. They see and know their child as a whole person, who by the sheer definition of a human being, has a body and brain that work in tandem. They dance, they flow, or they have two left feet.

So -- by identifying the underlying physical connections to the mental, emotional or behavioral problems and addressing them with specific super foods, homeopathics and nutritionals, the whole individual emerges - the one you know - deep down inside.

Here are the eight major nutritional and biochemical imbalances related to mental, emotional, behavior and learning problems:
  1. Blood Sugar Imbalances
  2. Nutrient Deficiencies
  3. Infection
  4. Allergies and Sensitivities
  5. Toxicity or "Body Overload"
  6. Metabolic Imbalances
  7. Hormone Imbalances
  8. Neurotransmitter Imbalances

We will address each of the above eight causes of emotional, cognitive and behavioral problems -- individually, in the upcoming newsletters.
