"They forgot God their Savior, Who had done such great things in Egypt, wonders and miracles in the land of Ham, dreadful and awesome things at the Red Sea. Therefore He said He would destroy them. [And He would have done so] had not Moses, His chosen one, stepped into the breach before Him to turn away His threatening wrath. Then they spurned and despised the pleasant and desirable land [Canaan]; they believed not His word [neither trusting in, relying on, nor holding to it]; But they murmured in their tents and hearkened not to the voice of the Lord." -King David
Sometimes a challenging present makes us forget what God has done to bring us out of our past.
The Israelites became so dissatisfied in their present (wilderness) that they began to despise their future (purpose and destiny in Canaan.)
It took so long to reach their promised destination that they decided not to live by the Word of God anymore. Instead, they began to live recklessly, fulfilling their own appetites in the wilderness.
"Therefore He lifted up His hand [as if taking an oath] against them, that He would cause them to fall in the wilderness, cast out their descendants among the nations, and scatter them in the lands [of the earth]" (Ps. 106:26-27.)
A sure sign of the disfavor of God is to be scattered and never possess your promised land, your promised position, your promised ministry, business or marriage.
Have you ever lost vision or the desire to serve God after a season of failure and sin?
God allows "desert U-turns."
You just have to stop complaining about where you currently are in life and change your position and perspective. God has promised a specific place (territory) for you (to occupy or do business) where no man will be able to stand (compete) before you all the days of your life. But it is not found in your grumbling, sin and rebellion.
Dissatisfaction and failure doesn't change our destiny; decisions do.
In the history of humanity, passivity and complaining has never steered anyone toward their destiny and dreams.
If you are not there yet; if you don't know where your territory is, you can still make a desert U-turn and start going in the (right) direction of God. He will lead you. He will connect you to someone else's vision, until you get your own.
The Israelites had no clue where they were going when they left Egypt. Consequently, it did not take the Israelites forty years to "find" Canaan.
It took them forty years to crossover and possess it.
In two years they found it; but for thirty eight years, they meandered in one place doing nothing to change their position with God.
- Have you seen the promise or "dream" position you want?
- Has God given you a glimpse of how your best life (or promise) looks?
- Is it so incredibly blessed that it scares you (to enter it?)
- Have you refused to make the necessary changes to position yourself for conquest and dominion?
In Numbers 13, Moses sent a twelve man committee to conquer giants. He sent a committee to do what only "worshippers" could accomplish: SLAY GIANTS. Every tribe sent a representative to see and scout out the land to create a thirst and strategy to get in. Instead all (but two) came back with an excuse to stay out.
The failure to possess Jericho was a failure to worship and obey (evidenced later when Joshua used a unique military strategy of sending praisers to shout down the walls in Joshua 6.)
Their knowledge became a roadblock to the instant obedience needed to dispossess nations.
The Amplified Editor footnote in Numbers 13:28 says: "The scouts probably had not seen walled cities before, having lived their childhood in Goshen in Egypt. Those who forgot God's power to help them naturally found the situation formidable, as happens in the lives of most people. 'But God' makes all the difference between cowards and Calebs."
God gave Caleb hope and strength at the age of eighty (80) to still go in to possess what he failed to occupy forty years earlier.
Today, what's your excuse?
Joshua and Caleb didn't start a new church in the wilderness to try to take the Promised Land after the Israelites refused to go in (and possess.)
They stayed in the camp.
They stayed subject to the authority of Moses with a Word that their promise (and time) would soon come. Although, some tried to go in after they grumbled at the command to go in, they were quickly turned back by the Amalekites and the Canaanites.
Because God refuses to give a promise to a disunified people.
Let's face it, most of the jobs, churches or relationships we leave wrong are the result of someone becoming disunified (i.e., you and a boss, co-worker, member, pastor or maybe significant other that led to attendance problems and disruptions at work;)
But Jesus said "A kingdom or house divided against itself cannot stand."
Refuse to become divided in who you are in Christ, in your study and prayer habits, in your thoughts and words. Refuse to live in offense with God or man.
Learn to recount the goodness of God in the past when you cannot see the future. Dare to recall the deeds and wonders of old.
God, my friend, did not bring you through the wilderness to leave you there.
