"There was once a man descended from a royal house who needed to make a long trip back to headquarters to get authorization for his rule and then return.  But first he called ten servants together, gave them each a sum of money, and instructed them, "Operate with this until I return."  "But the citizens there hated him. So they sent a commission with a signed petition to oppose his rule: "We don't want this man to rule us." "When he came back bringing the authorization of his rule, he called those ten servants to whom he had given the money to find out how they had done.  "The first said, 'Master, I doubled your money."  "He said, 'Good servant! Great work! Because you've been trustworthy in this small job, I'm making you governor of ten towns. "The second said, "Master, I made a fifty percent profit on your money." "He said, "I'm putting you in charge of five towns." "The next servant said, 'Master, here's your money safe and sound. I kept it hidden in the cellar. To tell you the truth, I WAS A LITTLE AFRAID. I know you have high standards and hate sloppiness, and don't suffer fools gladly."   "He said, 'You're right that I don't suffer fools gladly-and you've acted the fool!  Why didn't you at least INVEST the money in securities so I would have gotten a little interest on it?" -The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

Nothing appreciates without investment.

An investment always involves risk:

  • Risk that you may not make your money back.
  • Risk that you will go to school and not secure a job in your field.
  • Risk that you will start a business and not succeed or prosper in it.
  • Risk that you will train a new employee and not receive a return of investment.
  • Risk that you will play aggressive and somehow miss a crucial play.

What are some risks keeping you from doubling your income or success in life?

You cannot allow fear of failure to keep you from taking risks.

Notice, the third servant's mindset: "I'm not as good as them.  They have passion, they have degrees, they have bold leadership qualities and business skills; I DON'T.  I'm just not cut out to run a business.  I can't take the risk of losing everything I have.  I'd rather just maintain my current position and business size.  After all, what if my report or presentation is not as strong (or as good as theirs?)  What if it is too sloppy? What if I fail or they reject me? My master's standards are just too high; he doesn't tolerate mediocrity well, so I'm not even going to waste my time and make a fool of myself.  I'll just bury my talent in the ground."

What is your mindset?

Just because you are not good at something doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

The master's response to the servant was, "You should have least made an investment, so I could get something back in the future!"

Herein lies the problem with many people: Not only do we refrain from trying the hard stuff (meet high standards and take hard assignments), we don't make the investment and learn how to do it (better) in the future (next time.)

Because of one man's slothfulness, another man profited:

"Then he said to those standing there, 'Take the money from him and give it to the servant who doubled my stake.'  "They said, 'But Master, he already has double . . ."He said, 'That's what I mean: RISK YOUR LIFE AND GET MORE THAN YOU EVER DREAMED OF. Play it safe and end up holding the bag."

Don't play it safe.

Someone is waiting to profit from what you refuse to invest in.

Someone wants the job, calling, anointing, position, talent, idea or invention you refuse to increase.

And they are preparing for it RIGHT NOW.  They are making the sacrifices you refuse to make to take whatever you fail to possess.

USA Today had a great article this past week about the recent dramatic rescue of the US Captain held hostage by Somali Pirates:

"Navy SEAL snipers endured some of the military's most rigorous training to enable them to carry out missions such as killing THREE Somali pirates holding a U.S. hostage with THREE PRECISE SHOTS Sunday.  The making of a SEAL sniper involves more than three years of training, and that's only if the SEAL survives a process that culls three of four volunteers, said Cmdr. Gregory Geisen, spokesman for the Naval Special Warfare Command in Coronado, Calif.  It is training that allowed the THREE SNIPERS on the USS Bainbridge to make one of the most difficult shots imaginable: shooting simultaneously 75 feet away from the swaying deck of a warship at three moving human targets bobbing at dusk in a lifeboat on the swells of the ocean.  It wasn't a long-range shot at all, but it was a very difficult thing to do," said Chris Sajnog, 39, a former SEAL instructor. "There's no one else in the world who can do that," he said."

Three years of rigorous training to carry out their mission, dreams and plans.

  • Three enemies (pirates.)
  • Three snipers.
  • Three shots.
And it was all over.

That's the precision, excellence and readiness God wants to burst out of your life.  Where you can close a client or case in one presentation or appearance, one sales call, one meeting, one training session; Where you can finish a project in one day that takes others days to complete.  Where just one prayer, one mentoring session, one Word or encounter changes the lives of those you meet and lead.

Today, your talent has been buried in the ground long enough.  Dig it up.  Do something with it.  No one is perfect.  But if you are going to fail or make a mistake, do it giving 100%.

Three out of every four people never survive Navy SEAL "Hell Week."

Will you survive yours (your hell week, month or year?)  Will people one day, be able to marvel about your exploits and say: "There's no one else in the world who can do that?"

Don't tell me you can't be what Christ was in the earth.  Whatever is impossible with men is possible with the God who lives inside you.

On March 4, 2009, we challenged you with a single question:

"What is the greatest investment you can make to your organization, church, family or dream in the next six weeks?"

What was it?

We want to know.
