Topeka Gas Worker Attacked by Two Pit Bulls.

City Gas Worker Attacked on Duty

Topeka, KS - Two pit bulls attacked a Kansas Gas Service employee sending him to the hospital with injuries. The employee was handing paperwork to residents of a home when two pit bulls came at him from inside the house. The dogs "latched on" to the man's arms. He was taken to a Topeka hospital by American Medical Response ambulance.

Louis Cortez of the Topeka Police Department said, "If this pit bull would have attacked a small child walking to school the child wouldn't have had a chance. The only reason why this gentleman made it through was he was wearing heavy clothing and he was able to fend off the dog until we arrived."

The city of Topeka bans new pit bull ownership and requires existing pit bull owners to have a permit; it's unclear if the owner had such a permit. It's also unclear if the pit bull owner held an insurance policy. The cost of 2 adult pit bulls "latching on" to a man's arm is not cheap. If bones were fractured, the cost easily reach 50,000 dollars. If the victim can't pay, the citizens of Topeka, Kansas will.

Breed of the Month: German Short-Haired Pointer

A versatile hunter and all-purpose gun dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer possesses keen scenting power and high intelligence. The breed is proficient with many different types of game and sport, including trailing, retrieving, and pointing pheasant, quail, grouse, waterfowl, racoons, possum, and even deer. A medium-sized breed, he has an aristocratic bearing and can be solid liver or liver and white in color.

Coat: The hair is short and thick and feels tough to the hand; it is somewhat longer on the underside of the tail and the back edges of the haunches. The hair is softer, thinner and shorter on the ears and the head.

Average size: 55 to 70 pounds and 23 to 25 inches tall at the shoulder.

History:
The origin of the German Shorthaired Pointer is not clear, but the source of the breed seems to have been the German Bird Dog, related to the old Spanish Pointer, and various crossings with local German scent hounds and track and trail dogs. When the Germans introduced the English Pointers to lend elegance to the German Shorthaired Pointer prototype, the result was a utility dog that combined sporting virtue with clean lines, good looks and sound temperament.
Any dog can bite

Even the cuddliest, fuzziest, sweetest pup can bite if provoked. Some owners actually promote aggression in their dogs or allow aggression to go unchecked.
Although media reports and rumors often give the impression that certain breeds of dog are more likely to bite, there is little scientific evidence to support those claims.
From nips to bites to actual attacks, dog bites are a serious problem. Countless more bite injuries go untreated. On average, about a dozen people die each year from dog bite injuries. Bulli Ray can teach you the steps to help address this problem.

How big is the problem?

About 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year. Almost one in five of those who are bitten: a total of 885,000 annually: require medical attention for dog bite-related injuries.
In 2006, more than 31,000 people underwent reconstructive surgery as a result of being bitten by dogs.

Who's being bitten?

The number of recorded dog bite injuries is higher in children than adults. The elderly and home service providers such as mail carriers and meter readers are also very high on the list of frequent dog bite victims.
