Breed Of The Month

Dutch Shepherd

History of the Breed
Dutch Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds share a common ancestry in the German Shepherds. However, unlike the Belgian Shepherd the Dutch Shepherd has not been able to attract a huge fan following. This breed had been developed in the Netherlands for use as a herding dog. Its ability to function as a herder and its quick reflexes had made the Dutch Shepherd popular. This had been utilized as an all-purpose farm guard, herder, cart-puller, guard, police and security dog.
The dog had evolved in early 1800s in the Southern parts of the Netherlands (the province of Belgium and neighboring Belgium.
 Description of the Breed
The dog's body is muscular and symmetrical. It has a long muzzle and strong and rectangular teeth. The eyes of the dog are dark. They are also slightly slanting. The dog has relatively small ears. These remain stiffly erect.
The chest and belly are deep. They are not too drawn up. The feet of the dog are relatively small. They do not have dewclaws. The dog's toes are well arched and its nails and pads are black. In between the toes protective hairs are present. The dog's tail is slightly curved.
Coat
There are three varieties of Dutch Shepherd dogs- the longhaired, shorthaired and wirehaired varieties. While the longhaired dogs have long, straight, flat and harsh hair, the shorthaired ones have fine and dense hair. Again the wirehaired dogs have wiry hairs of medium length.
The coat color range of the three varieties, however, remains same for all- shades of brindle, including gray, silver, yellow, red or gold and blue. The shorthaired Dutch Shepherds are the most common followed by the wirehaired dogs. The longhaired Dutch Shepherds are very rare.
Height: The dogs have heights of 22-25 inches.
Weight: Weights of Dutch Shepherd dogs vary between 55 pounds and 67 pounds.

Mayer Demands Accountability
County Animal Control on the Hot Seat

Lancaster, CA - On October 14th, the Lancaster City Council and Mayor R. Rex Parris heard a status report from the head of Los Angeles County's Animal Control Department regarding the Pit Bull Sweep Operation. In the last 30 days, the agency responded to 257 pit bull-related calls and impounded 61 pit bulls that were roaming freely throughout the community.

Back in September, it was revealed that animal control officers reported seeing 24 pit bulls roaming city streets "but not one of them was picked up," Parris said. When asked why, county officials produced several false statements including: state law prohibits enforcing laws against one type of dog, such laws are "very problematic to enforce" and that laws must apply to all animals.

The mayor said, "Instead of picking (the dogs) up, people get warnings and citations, and when you hand out citations, people fix the problem (by paying a fine) and we still have the pit bull. The reality is, these dogs are different. They hurt people, and it's usually children." He added, "Gangbangers have taken these dogs and used them to intimidate each other and regular citizens." California municipalities have the authority to enact breed-specific spay and neuter laws. Authorities cannot, however, deem a specific breed of dog to be "vicious," nor can they ban a specific breed.
Lancaster officials created a new ordinance that allows Animal Control officers to detain pit bulls if they are unaltered. But Parris noted, "What good does it do me to have an ordinance if Los Angeles County (employees) won't enforce it?" In response, District Supervisor directed county staff to implement a 60-day Pit Bull Sweep Operation to maximize dog control efforts in Lancaster.

Since their initial complaints to the county, Lancaster officials have had discussions with representatives of Palmdale about halting their payments to the county for animal control services and establishing their own care and control agency. Parris said he wants all vicious animals off the streets.
Houston TX Leads the nation in Letter Carrier Attacks

Saturday, May 17, 2008
Houston, TX - Vicious roaming dogs are among letter carriers' biggest fears, and Houston leads the country in attacks on postal employees. Letter carrier, Sonia Perez knew her day might come. The 28-year-old, though, had hoped to go up against a pint-sized Chihuahua rather than the huge Rottweiler that attacked her last weekend.

She never had a chance to reach for her Mace. She screamed and punched as the dog repeatedly sank his teeth into her thigh, tearing out chunks of her flesh. The encounter lasted only a couple of minutes, but it was enough to leave deep puncture wounds that required a four-day hospital stay. Perez said she put up a fight. "I have my children to worry about," she told reporters.

Houston leads the nation in letter carrier attacks. Last year, more than 3,000 letter carriers were attacked by dogs, including 103 in Houston. Santa Ana, CA, ranked second with 86. Sacramento was third with 82. Houston held the second slot in 2006, with 94 attacks. That was down from 108 the year before, when it ranked first. Houston also owned the top ranking from 1997 to 2000.
