Oregon Expands State Family Planning Program!

While other states around the country are reducing access to family planning services, Oregon is making the bold move to expand access!  Beginning in April 2012, the state Medicaid family planning program (C-Care) expanded eligibility to cover adults and teens up to 250% of the federal poverty level, a significant increase from the previous rate of 185% of the federal poverty level.  This is fantastic news for the women and families of Oregon-- now 43% of women in Oregon qualify for this program.

C-Care covers free birth control and annual exams, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, that are essential for the health of women and families throughout Oregon.  Currently approximately 100,000 people are served by Oregon's C-Care program each year.  The change in eligibility requirements will allow 20,000 more Oregonians to receive family planning services annually. To qualify for the program, the monthly household income for a family of four is now $4,803, up from $3,554.

While unintended pregnancy rates have dropped significantly in the United States between 1994 and 2001, it actually rose nearly 25% for women living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. In addition to providing health care to people who couldn't otherwise afford it, the C-Care program saves the state millions of dollars.  Between 1999 and 2008, over 845,000 people used the C-Care program. Data from Oregon Management Reports shows that the program has saved the State of Oregon an estimated $330 million in Medicaid expenditures.

Photo-voice project Photo-voice is an empowering community-based research technique that uses the perspective of the group that is being researched, having them define the problem and the solutions through the use of photography.  The Latina Health Coalition (lead in part by PPSO) has created a photo-voice project to find out what the Latino youth in southern Oregon think about teen pregnancy and what can be done to address this issue.

After three training sessions, 14 youth have taken photos of the community, selected the photos that they feel capture the strengths and weaknesses of the community, and generated photo captions to explain each photo.  The youth will be presenting their photos and captions, and sharing their perspectives with the community on Friday, May 18th, 5-7PM during the Medford 3rd Friday Art Walk Event at the SOU/RCC Higher Ed Center.

You Want to Get Rid of What??

"Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that." - Mitt Romney

Thank goodness we have supporters like you who understand that "that" is someone's lifeline.  We love to hear you say that you believe in our mission, and you're committed to making sure we are here for your children and grandchildren.  Today, we need you to confirm that commitment with a donation to PPSO.

What would it take for you to make that commitment?  You know that we serve over 50,000 Oregonians each year, and that we are your region's most respected provider of reproductive health services and comprehensive sexual education.  Maybe what we haven't told you lately is how much we need you.

Please give today.  Your gift makes it possible for us to serve our clients with compassion and respect.

PPFA Annual Conference

The Planned Parenthood Annual Conference was held in Portland this year, and PPSO staff and board members were there in force!  This conference connects the Planned Parenthood family across the country and the world, and inspires all of us to learn, grow, and collaborate.  This year, PPSO's Safe Is Sexy tattoos were a huge hit.  Check out a fun slideshow of folks at the conference sporting our tats.
