Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

Back to school already! Who knew the summer would fly by so quickly or be so darn HOT?  We hope all of your back to school efforts have gone smoothly and wish everyone a safe, healthy and enlightening school year.

As a brief recap, last June 16th we held our first SLWC Garden Walk which was fabulous!  All of the gardens were unique and beautiful in their own way, and we are so grateful for our members who worked hard and stepped up to showcase their terrific gardens. THANK YOU again to Terri Flynn, Kim Briggs, Carissa Alvers, Annette Vincent, Marcia Coleman, Kathleen Parrilli, Mary Roberts, Jessie Wiktor, Ann Morrissey, and Yvonne Steele!!  It was a lovely event.

Also, the Tuesday Night Ladies League (May/June/July) at Indian Boundary was a lot of fun.  We are going to try to get the word out far in advance next Spring to our surrounding parishes, in hopes that they can bring out some ladies as well.  We think that would be a blast, so start talking it up now.

And moving forward, this year marks the 125th Anniversary of St. Luke Parish.  The parish has a number of events planned for this exciting milestone, so keep your eyes open. The SLWC has decided to take on a couple of goals too. See box below for all the details.

Next Thursday, September 13th, SLWC member Anne Marie Swatos is hosting a Mom's Night Out/Back to School Night at Jim's Pour Decision (7522 Madison, Forest Park) from 7pm-10pm - click to see invite.  Please come to celebrate getting back into the swing of things. SLWC officers will be there, where we are hoping to get some informal SLWC feedback and ideas for the future. We also have now established monthly meetings and welcome all to attend/participate.  We will meet officially the first Monday of every month.  Please contact Noreen Leavy if interested in attending - [email protected] or 708 404 0556.

We are starting a Biggest Loser/Get Fit Weight group.  Why not try to have fun, get fit, and lose weight?  We plan to have a start up meeting next week.  See all details below.

Membership renewals will go out mid October.  Our membership fee will be $25.00 again this year, and all goes towards our efforts and events that we have throughout the year.  We plan to roughly have the same number of events and participate in the same initiatives as last year. We really appreciate the tremendous support the club has received this past year.

Lastly, we have decided to include a Bulletin Board section to the newsletter.  This area (and attachment) would be similar to Mom Mail but on a much smaller scale. More information can be found below, but we wanted to expand our outreach to SLWC members in this way.  In this area you will be able to submit anything from something you may want to donate or sell, to babysitter availability or needs, to an event/cause that you support.  We hope this is a good fit for our community.

Thank you for your continued support.

Warmest Regards,

Molly Hague

Remember:  All of our newsletters and current information and invites are archived on the St. Luke Parish website click here for St. Luke Parish website.  It takes some digging to get to Women's Club page, but we are there. And generally speaking, anything you see in the newsletter in bright blue and underlined can be clicked on for further information.

SLWC celebrates
125th St. Luke Anniversary

SLWC member Genie Halloran is heading up the Gala Reception following the 125th Anniversary 11:00am mass at St Luke on Sunday, October 21st and is looking for volunteers to help with the planning of this festive event. Please contact Genie - [email protected] or 708 366 2686 if interested in helping with any aspect of the event. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

In addition to participating in the parish anniversary events, we thought it may be a nice idea for the SLWC to commemorate this as well with a tie into St. Luke, the patron saint of physicians and surgeons.  We are looking into the idea of a service project at Loyola hospital, possibly with the Ronald McDonald house in Maywood. We will keep you updated.

We also were hoping to present  the parish with a gift from the SLWC and are working with Fr. Ken, we will let you know how this progresses.

Bulletin Board Idea
Why use the SLWC Bulletin Board?

It kinda works like this...

So this spring you stumble upon a practically new pair of penny loafers your son wore once on his First Communion and would love to pass along to someone who may need them this year.

You have bunk beds your kids no longer need; they are in excellent condition and you are looking for a reasonable price for them.

Or you have an excellent babysitter
that you only need for after school care and was hoping to help her by asking around the community if anyone may need her during daytime hours.  TRUE STORY:  Please contact Diane Ruggie 708 203 1544 or [email protected] for more information.

Your oldest daughter needs braces - and you are wondering who's a good orthodontist in the area? Why not ask the community for private recommendations good or bad.

You are volunteer coordinator for a charity race and need more helpers?

Or you are heading up the 11th annual Lemon Aid Stand on Sept 11 from 3-6pm on the 700 block of Bonnie Brae.  Proceeds this year will benefit Sarah's Inn in Oak Park.  And you were interested in getting the word out.  TRUE STORY!

Your company has a job posting and you think someone from SLWC community would make for a good fit.

You have a singing gig at House Red and would love to tell your SLWC friends about it..

Above are just some examples of what and why you would use the SLWC bulletin board.  Don't hesitate to throw something our way if you are unsure if it qualifies or not, we will try our best to get it in the monthly bulletin board.  NOTE:  We try to get newsletter out between 1st-10th of the month.

Our only stipulations to post are:
  • that you are currently a member
  • you are not solicitating your business or asking for personal donations

Rose Szurko Ramage has offered to help us with this effort.  Thank you Rose!  We are excited and hope this fills a need in the community.

Please e-mail her (with "SLWC Bulletin Board" in subject line) if you are interested in posting something.  She will send you a template to fill in:

Kids Lunch Ideas?

Lunch Box Idea List

The same scene plays out every weekday morning in kitchens across the country: a tired parent leans forward with one arm holding the refrigerator door open, eyes scanning the shelves for something to pack into a lunch box. What do we have in the house? What do we have that's healthy? What do we have that he will eat?

I'm faced with the same daily questions and after months of starting from scratch - and getting into ruts - I finally decided to write down all the foods my sons like that can be eaten cold or at room temperature. I asked friends and blog readers to send me their suggestions as well and came up with a fairly comprehensive list.

Not all kids will eat everything on

here of course (my son wouldn't touch carrot sticks if his life depended on it) but even the pickiest eaters will find some things on this list that they'll enjoy.

Make your life easier on hectic mornings - download a printable version of this list, print it and stick it to your fridge for instant inspiration:

Carbs/Tummy-fillers
  • whole grain crackers
  • pretzel sticks
  • mini-muffins
  • goldfish crackers, cheddar bunnies or other snack crackers
  • pretzel thins
  • bagel chips
  • mini-rice cakes or rice crackers
  • cooked ball of rice
  • leftover pasta - toss with some chopped veggies and vinaigrette or a little olive oil, garlic salt and parmesan.
  • granola bars
  • banana bread, zucchini bread, or other quick breads
  • cereal bars
  • dry cereal
  • mini-bagels
  • hot dog buns, hamburger buns or dinner rolls
  • garlic toast
  • pita bread - I usually toast these so they don't get soggy. Mini pitas are fun or you can cut a big one into wedges.
  • leftover pancakes or toaster waffles - mini-waffles go over especially well.
Fruits
  • apples slices or chunks (dip in pineapple juice to prevent browning)
  • berries - strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • cherries
  • grapes
  • bananas
  • melon chunks - watermelon, honeydew or cantaloupe
  • dried fruit - raisins, dried cranberries, dried apples, banana chips, etc.
  • canned peaches or pears - drain and rinse with water to remove excess sugar.
  • applesauce
  • pineapple chunks
  • orange or clementine wedges
Veggies
  • carrot sticks
  • sugar snap peas
  • red bell pepper strips
  • cucumber slices
  • celery sticks
  • grape tomatoes
  • steamed green beans
  • steamed broccoli spears
  • frozen peas - run them quickly under warm water to start them thawing
  • frozen corn
  • edamame
Proteins
  • leftover meat from dinner cut into chunks - you can send almost anything: roast chicken, pork roast, chicken legs and carne asada leftover from tacos are all things my kids have enjoyed.
  • chicken or turkey sausage with bbq sauce or catsup for dipping
  • deli meats - turkey, ham, salami
  • beans
  • peanut butter "sandwiches" made with crackers or graham crackers
  • taquitos with salsa for dipping
  • baked tofu
  • quesadillas
  • mini-burritos
  • mini-pizzas - top mini-pitas with sauce, cheese and pepperoni
  • hard boiled eggs

Dairy

  • yogurt
  • cheese cubes
  • cheese slices
  • cottage cheese
  • string cheese, Laughing Cow, Babybel or other small single-serving cheeses

And then there are sandwiches, of course!

Don't forget to download and print this list! I've made it easy for you:
