Chicago's museums are world-class, but all those bonesweather simulators and rides in Chicago's first

gift shop, and it adds up fast. But in the philanthropic spirit of our fine city, most museums offer free admission on certain days. Here's a complete

calendar for the coming month.

Then on the first full weekend of

each month present your card and get a free admission to The Art Institute of Chicago, the Adler

Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

Happy Summer!  At this point most schools are out and the fun has begun.  We wish you well on your summer plans.

First and foremost, the SLWC is hosting the first Coffee On the Plaza this Sunday, June 10th after 9am and 10:30am mass.  We are LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO BRING BAKED GOODS - if you can please let  Amy Tomaso know - atomaso@gloor.com or 488-0551.

Last month the SLWC hosted a special Pack the Pews,
Mary:  A Celebration Honoring Our Blessed Mother.  This festive event had terrific support and was a beautiful evening. The food provided by DaLuciano's and Armand's was delicious.  The kids were kept busy at the craft table featuring a couple of cute Marian crafts and we had a number of members help us with fruit, desserts and clean up.   We even had a rosary made out of cupcakes and Blessed Mother chocolates!

THANK YOU to Shena Keith, Beth Phelan, Julie Westerman, Colleen Weiler, Donna Slepicka, Michele Bolger, Mary Pat Devereux, Rose Szurko Ramage, Patty Timpone, Bridget Thomason and Tamara Hicks for all your help and making the night a success!

The Tuesday Night Women's Golf League at Indian Boundary is going strong. We've had some really beautiful Tuesday nights. If you are interested in joining the group, please do so.  It's not too late and they will negotiate a fair price with you.   Come as a single or bring a friend(s) and join a foursome.  Click here for details on Tuesday Night Women's Golf League

The Garden Walk is planned for Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 11am-1:00pm.  We have some wonderful gardens and really appreciate all the volunteers for opening their gardens to our walk.  The idea if very simple, you can start and stop at any point and go anytime between 11am and 1pm.  Bring as many or as few friends as you want.   THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THIS EVENT.  We will have a small refreshment stand at a central home.  We are praying for a nice day!

We have a recap of our year below.  It's been a lot of work but a great year and we sincerely thank you all for your support and encouragement.

The newsletter is taking the summer off - see you next time in September!  Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Thank you for your continued support.

Warmest Regards,

Molly Hague

SLWC State of the Club Address

In September of last year we asked for your support and membership.  We set out with a somewhat ambitious list of goals and initiatives for the year and wanted to let you know where we stand today.

Here is a part of our membership letter outlining what we had hoped to accomplish this year:

"Our mission is to nurture and strengthen the relationships among the full spectrum of women in St. Luke Parish in an effort to better serve both the social and spiritual needs of our parish community, as well as other worthy causes.

Our desire is to build membership by having fun with friends and by developing new friendships with St. Luke Parish women through active participation in the following tentative schedule of events we have planned:

*Fall Kickoff Event

*Winter Event

*Combined Event with the St. Luke Men's Club

*Parish wide May Crowning Celebration

*June Garden Walk

We would also like to serve the needs of our Parish in the following ways:

*Coordinate meals for any SLWC member and family during times of need

*Provide an Honor Guard at the Funeral Mass celebrated at St Luke for any SLWC member or a member of their immediate family

*Recognize all women of the parish on Mother's Day

*Actively participate in "Coffee on the Plaza" and "Pack the Pews" parish initiatives

*Help to facilitate a group creative effort which will enhance our parish, all suggestions and ideas are welcome

*In the spirit of giving back, the St Luke Women's Club will present and donate $100 to 3 different areas - ideally one donation each to St.

Luke Religious Education, St Luke School and St Luke Parish."

With that being said, this is what we accomplished with YOUR help:

Events and Initiatives...

FALL:

  • In late September we participated in Coffee On the Plaza.. at Ministry Fair Sunday.  SLWC also created the mass booklet program and provided larger poster signs for various ministries to use in church and at their tables.
  • In early November we hosted a terrific "Kick Off" event with really great wine and food tasting and an amazing raffle.  We had over 100 women in early November come together and sample wine and some delicious finger foods and walk away with some fabulous raffle items.
WINTER:
  • In early February we hosted a spa night at Elan Spa and Salon (owned by SLWC member Rita Johnston). Over 40 women attended.  It was a perfect night to relax and take advantage of Elan's discounted spa services and treat yourself, especially right before Valentine's Day!
  • In March the Peace and Justice Committee asked us to help with their Lenten Simple Suppers after Stations of the Cross on Fridays during Lent, which we did.  We had a nice night serving the group and getting to know some parishioners.
SPRING:
  • In April several new volunteers from St. Luke stepped up and helped SLWC member Cynthia Maroon and Misericordia Homes by participating in their fundraiser - Misericordia Candy Days.  This year they far exceeded their donation goals and couldn't be more thrilled and grateful to their volunteers!
  • In early May we opened up the Tuesday Night Indian Boundary Women's League to all SLWC.  There are approximately 20 women who come together on Tuesday nights and play.
  • We also hosted a Pack the Pews honoring our Blessed Mother in May.  This was in place of parish wide May Crowning.  This was a fun night.   Well over 100 parishioners enjoyed the evening of delicious foods and Marian crafts and treats!
  • Additionally in May, we provided laminated prayer card book marks to all the women of St. Luke parish on Mother's Day weekend masses.  They were really beautiful and had a variety of pictures of Blessed Mother Mary on each one with a special Mother's Day prayer. (We apologize to those who may have not gotten one - we heard they were all out of them by 12pm mass on Sunday.)
SUMMER:
  • The Garden Walk is schedule for Saturday, June 16 of this year.  We are anticipating great weather and really appreciate our volunteers who are graciously letting us enjoy their beautiful gardens!

Ongoing efforts...

  • We were able to show our support and love to some families this year by providing an honor guard at their loved one's funeral mass at St. Luke.  If you ever know of someone who may be interested in having this done at St. Luke church, please notify us.
  • We were also able to get a couple of meal calendars coordinated for families in need of meals.
  • At the suggestion of a SLWC member (Thank you Collette Malone!), we send mass cards to any member of SLWC that has lost a loved one
  • We send out a monthly newsletter to keep everyone connected and informed.  We hope to add a feature next year - called The Bulletin Board..watch for details on it in September.

And to sum up the year, in the spirit of giving back, we will be presenting the St. Luke Parish, Religious Education Program and St. Luke School - $100.00 each from the SLWC.

THANK YOU for your support!!  We had an ambitious year and was able to accomplish it with ALL of your support.

We are getting ready to look at next year and will have an open meeting if there is interest.  We would love to hear your feedback.  If you have feedback from this year, suggestions for next year or would attend a summer open meeting, please let us know.

In Our Prayers

Please keep the following special intentions in prayer:

  • For the 14 new priests that were ordained on May 12, 2012 at Holy Name Cathedral.  Continue to bless them as they become our leaders, 'ambassadors of Christ', and teachers of our faith and church.
  • For all the graduates this spring.  May God continue to bless them and be close by their sides as they move forward to the next chapters in their lives.
  • For safe and healthy travels this summer
  • For all the special intentions we hold in our hearts.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St. Luke Parish.

May the souls of Margaret Thornton, Maryann Jean Fiordaliso, Jacqueline Reed, Judith Schoenbaum-Wood, William J. Donnelly, Gerald L. Bagnowski, and

William E. O'Malley rest in peace.

"Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

Our Deepest Sympathies

Our deepest sympathies go out to our SLWC members who have recently lost a loved one.  Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
