Earth Day Begins at Home

There are plenty of ways you can make every day Earth Day. Improve your own small part of the planet by considering these suggestions for spring-cleaning, garden preparation, and home improvements.

  • Purchase non-toxic cleaning products. Use natural fiber sponges and cleaning agents that are biodegradable, phosphate-free, chlorine-free, and unscented.
  • Reduce paper use. Use rags instead of paper towels; cloth napkins instead of paper ones. Buy post-consumer recycled paper and recycle it when you've used it.
  • Refurbish responsibly. Use water-based or vegetable-based paints, stains, and varnishes. Don't wash paint thinners, household cleaners, oil, or pesticides down the drain or pour them on the ground; use them up, give leftovers to friends or a charity, or dispose at your local toxic waste disposal center.
  • Repair instead of replace.Reupholster furniture. Resole your shoes.
  • Replace disposable goods with renewable ones. Buy rechargeable batteries. Use dishes instead of paper plates.
  • Plant for the planet.Strengthen your garden's resistance to pests by planting resilient plants, by rotating the fruits and vegetables you plant, and by attracting friendly bugs to prey on the pesky ones.

Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,

Happy Spring!!!  It seems to be here, however the weather people are saying to be prepared for at least one more frost, so if you are trying to get a jumpstart on your garden, you may want to reconsider.  In the meantime, enjoy the unseasonably warm weather and hoping for safe travels for all that are leaving this week.

Looking at the SLWC spring calendar, we have a few things to share.

As a reminder, Misericordia Candy Days is Friday, April 27th (6am-6pm) and Saturday, April 28th (8am-4pm).  Please contact Cynthia Maroon if you are interested in volunteering your time: cmaroon@yahoo.com or 708 366 8133. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION.

It is not going to be possible for us to have a parish wide May Crowning service this year, simply because there is no available time to do this.  May weekends are busy with First Communion, Mother's Day, Memorial Day, etc.  In lieu of this, we are hosting a Pack the Pews on Saturday, May 12th after 5pm mass.  The theme of this evening will be "Mary:  A Celebration of our Blessed Mother".  We will need help.  We will provide a main entree for the group, but looking for volunteers to bring salads and desserts and to help decorate and plan. There are some terrific recipes and ideas on the following link:

We will keep you updated and will have a list of what we need in the May newsletter.  In the meantime if you have any ideas or know for sure you would like to volunteer at this point, please get in touch with Katie Planek - katiefahey33@hotmail.com - 708 848 6547.  We already have some really neat ideas to honor our Blessed Mother.

We have finalized the Women's Golf League information with Indian Boundary golf course. The league will begin on Tuesday, May 8th and run for 10 weeks, every Tuesday night.  All information can be found below in the 'Looking Ahead' section below.  This league is for beginners to intermediate, although all levels and all women (not just St. Lukers) are invited to play. Come as a single/double/triple and hook up with others to form a foursome or create and bring your own foursome.  It's guaranteed to be a good time!

And once again still looking for gardens to showcase in the Garden Walk.  If interested see information below.

Wishing you and your families a blessed Holy week and beautiful Easter.

Thank you for your continued support.

GARDEN WALK:

And we already heard from a couple of you on the Garden Walk which we will be on Saturday, June 16, 2012.  We are looking for people to volunteer their garden for a couple of hours. The walk may be from 10am-2pm and will be held in outside gardens only.  Ticket holders can start and end at any garden - so it's a very loose schedule.  Ideally we would love to get some homes in the same area so it is walkable.  There's a chance we may have an open reception with refreshments at St. Luke or another location close to gardens that makes sense. If interested in volunteering your garden - please contact Noreen Leavy - nonomck@hotmail.com or 708 404 0556.

Youth Ministry

In July of 2011 the Archdiocese of Chicago named the twelve months following "The Year of the Teens and Young Adults".  In effort to support this, we thought it may be nice to highlight our excellent Youth Ministry program.  We asked the St. Luke Youth Ministry coordinator Amanda Collins a few questions....

Tell us a little about how you came to St. Luke Parish.

I was living in Boston, finishing a Masters in Religious Education at Boston College and applying to ministry positions.  In spring of 2008, I interviewed at St. Luke. I had the opportunity to lead a session for the teens and then be interviewed by them.  I was already impressed by what St. Luke was doing, but after meeting with the young men and woman of St. Luke, I was hooked, and in July, I started as the Coordinator of Youth Ministry.

What is the vision for Youth Ministry at St. Luke Parish?
In 1997, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops released a document meant to be a sort of guide for ministry to youth.  It is called Renewing the Vision.  As a parish, our vision for Youth Ministry echoes what the Bishops outlined in that document.  The goals are: (1) to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, (2) to draw young people into the life, mission and work of our faith community, (3) and to foster personal and spiritual growth.

How does St. Luke Youth Ministry practice this?
Our response to these goals is a multi-faceted program designed to engage our young people in heart, body, and mind:
Prayer & Faith Sharing: Our annual Kairos and Freshman-Sophomore Retreats, and our Spark meetings are opportunities for our young people to spend time with God and talking about God. We also have teens acting as liturgical ministers and planners for our "Youth Powered Mass."

Service:

Through the Youth Summer Service Trips to the less visible one-time service projects like PADS or The Big Day of Serving, our young people have the opportunity to live-out their discipleship in concrete ways while reflecting on how to carry this experience of discipleship into other situations.

Community:

Spark is a kind of "front porch" to Youth Ministry where all are welcome to come, sit awhile with friends, and check-in along their faith journey.  Hiking trips, Ultimate Frisbee games, and other fun trips are outreach events that are low-stress way for teens to try out Youth Ministry for the first time.

July 2011 through June 2012 has been designated "The Year of Teens and Young Adults." What does this mean for St. Luke Youth Ministry and our parish as a whole?

The Year of the Teens and Young Adults is the first theme year in Cardinal George's Five Year Strategic Pastoral Plan for the Archdiocese of Chicago.  We have made enhancements in our program ranging from additional service opportunities to a re-designed blog, but most importantly, St. Luke Youth Ministry and the Parish Pastoral Council have issued an invitation to individual parish ministries to explore ways to better integrate our teens into all aspects of parish life.

Can you share a favorite memory from St. Luke?

A few years ago, we were volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Clarksdale, MS.  Our teens worked hard that week, but what really stood out to me was the incredible effort they put into getting to know the family whose house we were building.  At the end of the week, the teenage daughter did not want us to leave; she told our young people that they were the first volunteer group who had made her feel as if she were among friends.  That story is one of many amazing memories.

And lastly, not being from the area we have to ask - Johnny's or Buona?

Johnny's.  I was born in California and lived there until college, but both my parents are from Elmwood Park, and I grew-up hearing about Johnny's and getting a sandwich when we came out for family visits.

Misericordia Candy Days
Friday, April 27 &
Saturday, April 28

Cynthia is still looking for volunteers, please get in touch with her if you are interested!

Click here for more information on Misericordia Homes

Misericordia Candy Days will be Friday, April 27 from 6am-6pm and Saturday, April 28th from 8am-4pm.  You would be asked to volunteer by standing at local locations and soliciting monetary donations and handing out candy to generous donors.  There are no age limitations, so if you want to do this with your children you can (they tend to collect the most amount of money!).

Contact Cynthia Maroon to give her more information on your availability or have more questions. A Location Coordinator will then get in touch with you to firm up your location and time.

Cynthia Maroon - cmaroon@yahoo.com or 708 366 8133

*If you are a regular volunteer who has done this in the past and have not heard from a Location Coordinator by mid-March please contact Cynthia*

Thanks Cynthia for suggesting a terrific idea!!

Earth Day Reflection

April 22, 2012

In honor of Earth Day this month we asked SLWC member Millie Flannery, the founder and parent leader of the St. Luke Green Club, some thoughts on being green.  She collaborated with Bridget Sperduto, friend and Director of The Well Spirituality Center, and they came up with the following reflection...

Why Be Green?

"Our Earth is talking to us and we must listen to it."- Pope Benedict XVI

"Green" is becoming the newest marketing tool today. One plastic water bottle company even claims to be green because the process uses 25% less plastic to make their bottles. But why bother to be "green"?

Science now tells us what mystics of every religion have always known: We are all ONE. All that the Universe ever was, is, or will be came forth from a single point of energy. We called that energy God. All that exists was created in and with and through the energy or love of God. We are related to all that is. We share the same energy, chemistry, and genetics with ALL of creation.

In the gospel of John, chapter 17, Jesus prayed that we would know our oneness. Today Earth is teaching us this truth as well. We humans have forgotten and Earth in her distress is reminding us.

For the past 300-500 years, during the Industrial revolution and the age of technology, we have been living in ways that degrade Earth and all of her species, including the human. We didn't understand it then, but we must understand it now. Our future and the future of our children depend on it. What happens to Earth and all her systems happens to us. If the water, air, and soil are toxic, so are we.

Pope Benedict XVI says, "Experience shows that disregard for the environment always harms human coexistence, and vice versa." He goes on to say, "Respecting the environment does not mean considering material or animal nature more important than (human). Rather, it means not selfishly considering nature to be at the complete disposal of our own interests, for future generations also have the right to reap its benefits."

In short, being green is about being ecologically responsible, but it is also about social justice (for the poor are always the first to suffer from ecological degradation) and spiritual awakening.

Simple ways we can walk gently with Earth:

  • Avoid using plastic, especially water bottles:
    • Plastic never biodegrades and has limited recycle ability. Therefore, plastic always ends up in a landfill.
    • Bottling companies claim to hold title to fresh water sources. But water is a God-given resource essential for all of life. Privatization of water is limiting the availability of fresh water, especially to our poorest neighbors.
  • Use reusable bags when shopping.
  • RECYCLE.
  • Spend outside time with your family experiencing the awe and wonder of creation.
Thank you Millie and Bridget for submitting this
thoughtful reflection!

In Our Prayers

Please keep the following special intentions in prayer:

  • Family and friends of Rev. Kevin O'Rourke.  Fr. O'Rourke was a visiting priest who frequently celebrated mass at St. Luke and was a dear friend of the community.  His humility, gentle teaching spirit and kindness will be fondly remembered.

             Rev. Kevin O'Rourke

  • That we become closer each day to becoming instruments of God's peace.
  • For all the special intentions we hold in our hearts.

Our heartfelt condolences to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St. Luke Parish.

May the souls of Marie A. Garvey and

Elizabeth Capilupo  rest in peace.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Our Deepest Sympathies

Our deepest sympathies go out to our SLWC members who have recently lost a loved one.  Please keep them and their families in your prayers.
