Halloween Trivia & Fun Facts

Because of the unknown, Halloween is the one of the most captivating holidays, often celebrated by both adults and children. The element of surprise makes it fun and unpredictable. Enlighten yourself with Halloween trivia and fun facts to enjoy the holiday even more.

Halloween Holiday Trivia
  • Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
  • Jack o' Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday.
  • Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!
  • Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.
  • Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.
  • The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.
  • Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.
  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers #1.
  • Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first.
  • Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.
  • Black cats were once believed to be witch's familiars who protected their powers.

Join Our Mailing List

Greetings Women of St Luke Parish,

We are hoping by this point you have received your official St Luke Women's Club invitation letter.  We mailed these out to all registered parish homes the week of September 19th.  It is our hope you will join us in participating in fun and sisterhood of the women of St Luke.

The mission statement of the St Luke Women's Club is to nurture and strengthen the relationships among all women in St Luke Parish - old and young, private and public school, in an effort to better serve both the social and spiritual needs of our parish community.

In the very beginning of this process we sat down and asked ourselves how can we have fun and build connections with the women of St Luke and what can we do to help our parish?

We have recapped some of our goals below and and would love for you to consider being part of what we are hoping to be a great club.  There is also a "loose" Calendar of Events in the box below that should give you a general idea of what we have in store this year.

We  would  like to serve the needs of our Parish in the following ways:
  • Coordinate meals for any SLWC member and family during time of need
  • An Honor Guard will be provided at the funeral mass said at St Luke for any SLWC member or a member of their immediate family
  • Recognize all women of parish on Mother's Day
  • Actively participate in the "Coffee on the Plaza" and "Pack the Pews" parish initiatives
  • Help to facilitate a group creative effort which will enhance our parish - all ideas and suggestions welcome!
  • In the spirit of giving back - the St Luke Women's Club will annually present and donate $100 to 3 different areas - ideally one donation each to Religious Ed, St Luke School and St Luke Parish
We are planning to do our best to bring the women St Luke Women's Club together with our events, the above "Parish Outreach" efforts, and this newsletter - which will hopefully come out once a month.

We are very excited and hope you are too - so please try to get your sign up sheet in as soon as you can (additional sign up form is an attachment - see bottom of this letter).

This is a work in progress and appreciate your understanding as we evolve.  More importantly, we also really want to hear from YOU - so don't be shy -  sign up, get involved and let us know of your ideas or if we can help any way.

It is our honor to be part of the St Luke Women Club board and we look forward to serving the women in our community.

Fondly,

St Luke Women's Club Board

In Our Prayers

This section will be updated monthly based on e-mail/calls/messges we receive from SLWC members regarding special intentions of any nature.  We will also recognize and offers prayers for the recently departed parishioners.

Our deepest sympathies to all who have recently lost a beloved family member or friend of St Luke parish.

May the souls of recently departed parishioners rest in peace.  Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.  May the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Our Deepest Sympathies

This area will be reserved for any St Luke Women's Club member who has recently lost a loved one who is not a parishioner of St Luke. All too many times we hear of a close loved one long after the services have taken place. October Rosary Month

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7th.  Saint Pius V established this on the anniversary of the naval victory won by the Christian fleet at Lepanto.  It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful.

PRAY THE ROSARY IN OCTOBER AT ST LUKE

October is one of the special months each year for special devotion to Mary. A long-standing tradition is to pray the rosary each day in October. The rosary is prayed publicly each weekday morning,

Monday thru Saturday, after the 8:00 St Luke Mass.

Everyone is cordially invited to join in this devotion to Our Blessed Mother.

Just for Laughs...

And last but certainly not least - America just can't seem to get enough of Modern Family, which airs Wednesday nights @ 8:00pm on ABC.  Here are a few great quotes from the show.  Hope they make you chuckle..

Cameron: "I'm sort of like Costco - I'm big, I'm not fancy, and I dare you to not like me."

Phil: "I'm a cool dad, that's my thang. I'm hip, I surf the web, I text. LOL: means laugh out loud, OMG: oh my god, WTF: why the face"

Cameron: "I got all medieval on the florists.

Mitchell: Cam, I heard you on the phone, you said you were displeased, but that's hardly going medieval.

Cameron: Excuse me, I said very displeased and I used my cowboy voice."

Hayley: "Why are you guys yelling at us? We were way upstairs. Just text me."

Jay: "When I heard Manny wanted to fence, I was, like, sure. Uncoordinated kid, lethal weapon. How can this go wrong?"
