In Memorium

Child's Voice often shares in terms of family.  All current, alumni students and families are part of the Child's Voice family.  This is also inclusive of staff, supporters and friends of the organization.

On Sunday, August 5, 2012, an amazing member of the Child's Voice family passed away.  Dr. Donald Liu, husband of Board Member, Dr. Dana Suskind passed away in a tragic accident in Lake Michigan.  While saving the lives of two young boys, Dr. Liu was pulled under by the riptide in the lake.

Dr. Liu is survived by Dana, and their three children, Genevieve, Asher and Amelie. He was a renowned pediatric surgeon at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. His legacy lives on in the lives of the many children he saved throughout his medical career.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Suskind and her family at this time.

Back to School

It's that time again!  Today, the kiddos come back to Child's Voice in both the Early Intervention and School Programs.

The smell of freshly sharpened pencils, new boxes of crayons and classrooms cleaned and ready fill the hallways at Child's Voice.  After a few quiet weeks, the teachers and staff are ready for the children and families to come back to the classroom.  It's an exciting time!

"What a fun time of year!  I get to learn all the new personalities of my developing students.  I'm excited to see what makes them happy and find out their interests," shared Jeanette Hachmeister, the Learning Center teacher. "To experience the stories through their eyes, that's the best each year. And I have plans for magic to occur in the Learning Center and can't wait to get started!"

The transition from summer back to school can sometimes be challenging.  Many experts suggest getting back into the routine two weeks BEFORE school starts to be sure things are in sync again at home.  One big suggestion, make sure kids are getting plenty of sleep!  Tired students have a harder time learning and retaining all the new information.  WebMD recommends that a 3-6 year old child gets 12 hours of sleep a day.

Keeping children excited about coming back to school is a fun way parents can stay involved in the transition.  Ask the kiddos about their day and what they did at school.  This helps keep them excited about the school day during those first few weeks.

"We miss them!  The fall is such an exciting time when the seasons begin to change and we know that starting the year off right sets the tone for learning," said Principal Wendy Adler.  "It's great to have the new school year starting!  Getting back into the routine...it means a new year, new teachers, new opportunities and new growth for each student!"

Ryan Briere Foundation names Child's Voice as 2012 Partner

Child's Voice is honored to have been chosen as the 2012 recipient of the funds raised through the annual Ryan's Run 5K and Kiddie Sprint.  The Ryan Briere Foundation was founded last year in honor of Ryan Briere who passed away shortly before his third birthday.  The Foundation is focused on honoring Ryan's memory by supporting children.

Last year's Ryan's Run raised over $13,000 that was donated to Ryan's school, the Goddard School.  This year, we are thrilled that Ryan's Run will benefit the Audiology Center and its new program to provide follow-up testing and services to newborn babies following their screening at birth at the hospital.  Thank you to the Ryan Briere Foundation and to all those participating in and sponsoring Ryan's Run.

All Child's Voice families and friends are encouraged to consider sponsoring and participating in this great event! CLICK HERE for more information on Ryan's Run 5K!

Getting to Know...
Child's Voice Leadership
Dr. Michele Wilkins, LSLS Cert. AVEd.
Executive Director
Dr. Michele has been a key part of Child's Voice and its successes since July of 1999! Her passion for teaching children with hearing loss and deaf education has been in her blood since 1977! She received her undergraduate degree from Ball State University in Indiana and her Master's and Doctorate from the University of Houston.

She is the first to tell you that she loves Child's Voice and that it 'does it right.' Providing the 'best way' to teach children with hearing loss how to listen and talk.  She loves being the Executive Director and one of her favorite things to do is BRAG about Child's Voice, to get out into the community and promote the great work of Child's Voice.

"It's not a JOB, it's a passion and a calling," stated Michele.  "I am blessed to work with wonderful staff members, families and most of all, amazing children!"

She loves to garden, but may not have the greenest of thumbs.  Recently, Michele has attended cooking classes at Sur La Table and improved her fresh pasta-making skills! Michele also fills her time outside of Child's Voice with Zumba, water aerobics and country western line dancing...there's no keeping her still!

Michele and Chuck, her husband of 31 years reside in Naperville.  (She highly recommends the beach on those hot summer days!) They have two adult children, Wesley (27) and Shalee (23) and three furry babies, Toby, a beautiful golden retriever and two 12 year-old cats, Dylan and Shamrock.

"I have learned to surround myself with the BEST, SMARTEST, DEVOTED people, which is exactly what I have at Child's Voice," she shared.  "I am honored to say that I have learned to help others rise to their potential, help them learn and grow. What I have found out, and even been reminded of, is that I tend to have staff that are so fantastic they are enticed to leave to lead and excel in other organizations. The BEST is the BEST and Child's Voice has become known for our talented staff."

Thank you Dr. Michele for all you do to lead Child's Voice and help it grow and continue to make a difference in the lives of children with hearing loss!

  • Book-Ball Balance  Balance a Ping Pong Ball on a book while relay racing.  The book can't touch anything but your hands!
  • Build a Tower  Take turns stacking paper cups to create a tower.  Knock it down?  You're out! Keep going until there is one super stacker remaining!
  • Name that Animal  Make animal masks from paper plates and lay them facing down.  Put one on, then ask yes or no questions to guess which animal you are.
