Ideas, Ideas, Ideas

From MIchele...
Many of you know that Michele has taken a number of cooking classes at Sur La Table.

She wanted to hone her techniques and has take Basic Kitchen Skills through Advanced Italian cooking.  All of these were a gift from her husband...Michele felt this might be tip #1 - If your husband send you to cooking classes he may not like your cooking!

Now she makes pasta at home most weekends... here are some tips based on her experiences:
  • Don't use 5 eggs in your dough mix. It becomes way too sticky!
  • Don't knead dough on a granite counter top.
  • Do have extra flour close by.
  • Expect to wear much of the flour.
  • Do have the help of a friend when you roll out (in a pasta machine) your fettuccini. It becomes too long and unmanageable to handle alone!
  • Be sure to seal your ravioli or the 'guts' float out during cooking.
  • Cook immediately and eat immediately...or the dough turns a pukey greenish brown color - ew!
Once she perfects her skills, she's offered to treat us all to a homemade dinner of ravioli - if we're game!
Happy Valentine's Day (a little belated)!

To my wonderful staff,

A few days ago I was watching one of my favorite movies, "The Bucket List." It's about two men dying of cancer. The characters are played by Jack Nicolson and Morgan Freeman.  As roommates in the hospital they came up with a 'bucket list'. All those things you want to do or see before you kick the bucket. Long story short, the two men are sitting atop a pyramid. Morgan says to Jack, "Answer the two questions of life:

  • Have you experienced joy in your life?
  • Have you brought joy to others?"

These two questions haunt me-not sure why, but I find myself thinking about them often. So, now I will ask you to think about these two questions as well. I know my passion and work experiences are tightly meshed. What I do professionally brings me great joy personally. I have experienced many joyful happenings throughout my 35 years in deaf education. But, have I brought joy to others? That one...I am still collecting data on. I sure hope so.

Child's Voice Awesome Employees

Elsa Auerbach,
PI Teacher
Elsa's long tenure at Child's Voice is certainly something to celebrate!  She was the very first teacher when Child's Voice opened its doors in 1996.

Having spent 16 years at Child's Voice, Elsa feels that it is her second family!  (And we're glad to have her as our family too!)  She treasures spending time with her family too.  She is the mother of 3 and grandmother of 4.  On weekends, she and her husband Mike travel to see the family in Glenview, Deerfield and Chicago.

Something you may not know about Elsa...she plays the organ! Maybe for the next staff gathering we can see if Elsa would play a few tunes for us!

Elsa and Mike live in Flossmoor, over 40 miles away! Her dream car would be a new Mercedes since hers is a little old...and for all her travel, we hope she gets one! Her favorite thing to dine on, once she arrives at home, would be potatoes, veggies and bread! Yum!

We're lucky to have Elsa at Child's Voice and hope she stays to celebrate another 16 years!
What's New...
From the Aides...

As part of the Child's Voice team - the Aides are a HUGE piece of what makes our programs successful.  It's all about teamwork!

They do a fantastic job! They are the ones running kids to the bathroom, cleaning up after accidents, in the lunchroom and when the kids get sick.  Enduring the weather, 20 degrees or 90 degrees at recess, the aides are always outside running back and forth from the buses with a smile for the kiddos.

So just a moment to say a special and big...THANK YOU to the Aides.

Also, a thank you to the teachers that have been helping out at bus duty - holding doors, carrying backpacks and helping to get the kiddos inside safely.  It's been a great addition to the morning and afternoon routines.

Thank you too to the teachers that have been helping out as the Aides have been shorter-staffed.  Getting your kiddos on time after lunch and recess has been a big help and ensured that things keep running smoothly.

You're all wonderful - thank you!! Keep up the great work!
