President's Message
Is it just me or are our summers becoming hotter? It's a dry heat (so is an oven). This may not be H*** but you can sure see it from here. Yes, I could go on, but you have heard them all before. Bottom line, we deserve a reward for putting up with this miserable heat. What we need is a celebration, a party, a day to be revitalized and enjoy the company of our peers and friends. We need a day to get away from our normal job routines and listen to new ideas, successful endeavors, and share our knowledge and experiences, all within the cool, comfortable environment of a truly first class facility.
You all know where this is leading! You are invited to a celebration that occurs just once a year - our ITS AZ Annual Conference. Thank you to those already registered. If you haven't registered yet, don't miss out! It's only three weeks away! My year as President is drawing to a close. It has been an extremely active and, at times, difficult year. The Board of Directors has made major changes that we believe benefit ITS AZ presently and in the future. ITS AZ now has a solid financial footing. In order to accomplish this, we made the decision to take on more Board responsibilities that in the past were contracted out. To ensure future stability and program growth for ITS AZ, it is essential that we maintain an active and talented Board. In light of this, there will be several openings on the Board for next year (our year starts with the annual conference). We are looking for energetic individuals to work with the President-Elect and our talented team to push ITS AZ up to the next level.
This is my last message as president. It has been a pleasure to serve you this past year. I am looking forward to seeing you at our conference. The Best, Bob Steele ITS Arizona President |

FEATURED ARTICLE
Coordinated Traffic Signal Timing Performance Measurement Literature Review  A literature review indicates that there has been substantial research regarding measuring performance of traffic signal timing on coordinated systems. A good performance measure as one that has the following attributes: - is accepted by and meaningful to customers;
- tells how well goals and objectives are being met;
- is simple, understandable, logical, and repeatable;
- shows a trend;
- is unambiguously defined;
- allows for economical data collection;
- is timely, and
- is sensitive.
However the literature research finds relatively few suggested performance measures which satisfy the entire criterion above. Click Here to Read the Full Article. |

Traffic Scientist Toil to Keep Cars Flowing
By Brian Palmer - Aug. 7, 2011 Special to/for the Washington Post Traffic science is one of those disciplines that seems permanently poised on the verge of a breakthrough. Professional journals regularly publish promising research, and the media trumpets its importance. In 1999, the Post reported that scientists had gathered at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico to solve our national traffic problem - just as an earlier generation of physicists had done to build the atomic bomb. And yet driving on congested highways is still about as enjoyable as cleaning out your ears with a lemon reamer. Why can't we get anywhere? It turns out that traffic is a deceptively complicated problem. It could be said to resemble molecular physics, in fact, because it's a system of individual particles interacting in complex ways. Except, with traffic, the particles have minds of their own. Click Here to Read the Full Article. |
